Christmas-themed Cake at California Grill

Date Received: 12/13/09

Location: California Grill

Cake info: Chocolate cake with chocolate chips and chocolate mousse filling

Price: $100

How I Got Inspiration for the Cake: The cake was a surprise for friends whose anniversary is Christmas Eve, so I went on www.flickr.com and searched for "Christmas cake" and then, after being completely overwhelmed by the number of images, narrowed it down to "penguin Christmas cake." I created a file of photos of cakes I liked and then had my husband create a photo composite using the elements I wanted from each cake.

I highly recommend using Flickr if you're stuck on ideas for a cake, since Disney doesn't offer any standard selection of cakes or website of photos to use as inspiration. :thumbsup2

How I Ordered It: I called the Contemporary and asked to speak with Private Dining. I told the CM that I wanted a customized fondant cake, and she gave me the email address of Pastry Chef Brian. I emailed him the size, flavors, and a description of the cake I wanted, plus the photo composite of the way I wanted the cake to look.

The results were amazing - he got everything exactly as I wanted it and exactly as it appeared in the picture. I was worried that the penguins would be hard to match because the ones in the picture I sent were so stylized, but he did a fabulous job.

The trade-off with these elaborate Disney cakes is taste. It wasn't a bad cake, and it certainly wasn't dry - with all that mousse and the chocolate chips, it was very moist. It just wasn't very flavorful, in my opinion. However, the guests of honor liked it, and that's what counts! :teeth:

Thanks for sharing all the details. :)

Beautiful Christmas Cake! I want to order a graduation cake for DD for when we're down in July - I guess I'd better start looking for ideas! :surfweb:

I was wondering if you could just go to the boardwalk resort bakery and walk away with a cake? Does anyone know

Yes, my DH did this after CRT mismanaged our anniversary cake - and entire meal - in a HUGE spectacular way. He got an 8-inch chocolate/chocolate and they added writing while he waited. It tasted ok, like it had been sitting around too long ... it was honestly not as good as other BWB cakes we've had. I would ask if they can tell you how long the cake has been sitting. He told me they had a Mickey Head cake too but he really wanted the writing, I guess.

We got back a couple of days ago and had a wonderful vacation. Our Haunted Mansion cake at California Grill was just as gorgeous in person as the original pictures posted here. Brian outdid himself! It was a huge hit with my husband as well as my teen sons who love the HM as much as I do.

Ours was vanilla cake with custard & strawberry filling. YUM!!!! I am already looking for a reason to order a cake the next time we go to Disney.

I'm posting pictures anyway but it looks just like the one the original posted shared.

Anyone knows how much is this haunted mansion cake cost??
and has anyone ordered any special order birthday cake for 2 people? I don't want to waste food/money if we can't finish it during out stay. Thanks!

Lurkyloo, that Christmas cake is darling! What wonderful detailing too! You should really just march up to the GF bakery and tell them that you're taking over! I swear, you know more about the cakes then they do.:thumbsup2 Thanks for posting this, it's nice to see a beautiful cake and hear all the details. Actually, it seems there's been several really pretty cakes lately!:goodvibes

:rotfl:

Yes, it does seem like the pastry chefs are getting more and more creative these days, which is great! Maybe the What Will You Celebrate? campaign has given them more opportunities to make fun cakes than in the past. :thumbsup2

Here's a few pictures of the monorail themed cake I ordered for DH at the Contemporary last month. It was a ten inch (it was the only size private dining would customize) with marble cake and buttercream. I did ask for the layer of fondant as I thought it would give it a smoother look. All the people I dealt with were very nice and really willing to help. I also gave them free reign and just asked that it be monorailed themed.

The cake was $70.00, and since it was delivered to our room at the Contempory, a delivery fee and gratuity were added. Total was 90.35

Cake was tasty - just a whole lot for two people for just a couple of days! :rotfl:

I've got other cakes that I need to get uploaded from the GF.

Thanks for posting, I was always curious what the chocolate monorail looked like! I wonder if I could order one like this for a dinner at Chef Mickey's?

Thanks for the Flickr tip. My DS wants to celebrate his graduation at UO. If I can't find a bakery who'll deliver a specialty cake I like to Hard Rock Hotel, I'll probably do it myself. I'm so happy to have cakes to draw inspiration from. :cool1:

PS: You're cake was adorable. Your friends are lucky to have you in their lives.

I so very badly want to get a specialty cake delivered to my fiance at Pop Century but everywhere I call tells me this is not possible. :(

Does anyone know of a way to have this done?

It would be for Tuesday...

I just called one of the two Publix near WDW, and they said they will deliver. However, the charge is $30 on top of the price of the cake, and it has to be during the daytime.

Here's the info if you want it:

Publix @ Orange Lake Town Center
14928 E Orange Lake Blvd
Kissimmee, FL 34747-8210
Main: (407) 239-4989
Fax: (407) 239-6499

I think Garden Grocer or one of the other grocery delivery services can also do this for you, but, again, they charge a fee. The best would be if you were already ordering groceries thru them and could just add the cake to your order.

I've been trying for nearly a week to get ahold of Pat to order a cake for a Disney narcoosee dinner a week from today. I've left messages, but no call back. I'm leaving this afternoon for Disney. Should I just call the regular hot line again- tried that and they sent me to Pat's line twice. and order a slipper dessert instead. GRR.

Lurker coming out of lurking here :wave2: Anyway, I have been lurking to get ideas for a cake for our 15th anniversary in May. I was originally going to get it at the California Grill on our actual anniversary but our restaurant has always been the Yachtsman. DH in fact just had me add an ADR for our first night to dine at the Yachtsman so I think I will get the cake there. We are staying at the BC so any leftovers would be easy to take on back to the room.

My questions are these if you lovely cake lovers can help a girl out:
1) I am interested in the cake below but do they have any non edible cake toppers? There is a figurine that I have my eye on and if the bakeries don't have access to it I would be happy to send it to them before we arrive. Can this be done?

2) Are the cakes delivered to the Yachtsman done by pastry chef's like at the GF and CR?

I am sure I will have more questions but in advance I would like to say thanks to all of you for this very informative thread.

Thanks to beattyfamily for advice on #2. Anyone else able to answer #1?

BTW the cake I am wanting to use as a base is shown here http://disboards.com/showpost.php?p=35090786&postcount=3421

has anyone done an open book cake? For our wedding, we had a different cake which looked like an open book with a castle coming out of it - our fairy tale wedding. I would love to do something similar at Disney because we will be there for our 12th anniversary. Just not sure if it's possible for them. Any thoughts?

And if I want to do this on DCL as we are taking a cruise too, is it possible?
