Official Cake Chatter Thread

We're going to be in The World for my birthday this year. This is my first time ordering a cake and I've decided that I want the one from GF that has the strawberries & custard on the inside. I have to figure out how small they can do it, since there's only 4 or us (two of us will be under 6). I've heard that the lady at the GF is not very helpful/easy to deal with so here's a couple questions that I probably could get answered if I searched hard enough... but I figured that I'd try here first
**is there always a $75 delivery charge if they deliver outside the hotel? (I want to have mine at The Crystal Palace for lunch on my bday)
** I know what I want on the inside, but I don't know what my options are for the outside? Do I pretty much give them an idea of what I want and they'll just do it?
** Will they do toppers that are plastic and not sugar? I'm not an icing/sugar girl, so I'd rather have a little figurine that I can bring home with me and keep.

The GF bakery does not deliver birthday cakes to restaurants outside of the GF.

You would need to order thru the Palace.

Oh I just had to share this pic of a mini Tinker Bell cake we got at our local grocery store - it was $7.99 and we served 6 with it. And it was yummy to boot! Really makes me think twice about the $150 or so I spent on 2 cakes at Disney World. The cakes were great and I'm glad we commemorated 2 special occasions at Disney, but I'd be hard pressed to do it again.

I know, how could I resist? It was about 5" in diameter and we easily got 6 perfect pieces out of it. Keep in mind this was at our local store here in Chicago. But I've seen recommendations on this thread to order cakes for Disney from Publix, and I just might do thay next time around. If I had as difficult a time ordering from the cake hotline as some others have had, it would be a no brainer. As it so happens, I had a really good experience with the BC/YC bakery and also the WL. Took one phone call to each - no waiting for a return call, or being told the size or design I wanted wasn't available. I've read some horror stories on here where people leave message after message and never get a call back, or get quoted some absolutely outrageous price. I think it's a shame that Disney can't be more consistent when it comes to cake request, especially with this year's celebration theme.

OK, hubby and I are taking a no-kids trip to WDW in a few weeks. We'll be celebrating our anniversary and I'd like to surprise him with a cake at one of our meals. I know a cake can be huge for just two people, but we have a fridge in our timeshare, so it'll keep through the week.

Anyway, here are our ADR's. I'd prefer to get the cake as early in the week as possible, but searched through this thread and can't find anyone getting a cake at Teppan Edo. Please give me your advice, tips, etc.

the mini castle only fits on the single tier mini cake. The top tier of a mini wedding cake is only 1 1/4" in diameter, and the mini castle is a bit over 2"

Since they offer mini castles & Cinderella slippers for girls, has anyone had any luck with a small something yummy for a boy? Not the pirate cake, but something different.

Where does one order these specialty cakes? How far in advance do you order them? Is their a website? What is the cost?

You can call private dining at the resort where the restaurant that you want to dine at or have the cake made from is located and ask to speak to someone about ordering a specialty cake. I ordered our anniversary cake from Yachtsman Steakhouse and called private dining at that resort, I spoke to Marilyn and she was very helpful.

REad the first page of the thread - "stuck" to the top of this forum on Cakes -

its been an interesting read and I know that the cake thread can be overwhelming -

you can do something simple as tell the dining number you'd like a "podium cake" ($25 the last I recall) but it doesnt get great reviews as the cake has been "previously frozen" and sometimes the icing, just falls off, and the cake can taste dry - not all the time mind you - many have reported good results as well...

The Grand Floridian used to be known for their cakes, and specialty cakes, served at their restaurants - esp the $15 Chocolate Cinderella Slipper Dessert! Now reports are its hard to get an answer, or a call back or place an order different people have had different results.

Another choice is the Boardwalk Bakery - they have cakes made and you can go and pick one up from there - other people have had good luck calling them and ordering them for a Boardwalk restaurant -

The small treasure chest cakes that are advertised for this What will you celebrate have had good reviews - but they are small...

I booked a cake to surprise my husband for our Siver Wedding anniversary. I booked a meal at Coral Reef and we had menus with wedding photos and pics of the kids on, a diver with a message and a wonderful cake - my husband was absolutely bowled over by it all, he just couldn't believe his eyes! Anyway I booked the cake directly with the restaurant.

I had one done for my DH for his birthday when we ate at CP. I just called CP directly and ordered one. I also wanted a special design on it that matched the tshirts that our GG was wearing that day. They were SO accommodating. I emailed them the design and it was perfect.

If I recall correctly the cake came from Boardwalk Bakery. It was around $40.00 and was big enough for 9 people with some leftover. It was very good.

Also, just a side note, there is some images they won't put on the cake due to licensing...I really wanted a Star Wars theme, but they wouldn't do that.

For information, Coral Reef no longer does the diver signs or personalized menus - these were discontinued in January 2009. You can still order a specialty cake.

I don't know if anyone has asked, but has anyone ever ordered a red velvet cake? We will be celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary and I would like to order a cake. I think I will just order it from AKL since it looks like you can only get a chocolate mousse cake from Chefs de France.

If you can't get the pastry chef at Teppan Edo to make the cake personally, & don't know exactly what you're getting, stay away from Epcot cakes. The cakes through the Epcot line are pathetic.

Does anyone know if CR & Tutto Italia still make their own cakes, or if they also use the Epcot cake line now. Those 2 restaurants used to make the nicest Epcot cakes.

This may work in your favor. Hopefully, they make a nicer cake than you get from the Epcot cake line.

Wow, what a deal! That's adorable! I'm a Publix fan. They allow me to make additions or changes with no problem. Our cakes have always been fabulous.
