Official Breast Feeding Support Thread for WDW Parks

I just wanted to post about my big milestone- DS is one year old today, and this marks one year of exclusive breastfeeding (no formula, no bottles)! It hasn't always been easy, but I am so glad that I stuck it out and it has been such a joy. I feel so lucky that I was able to give DS the start that nature intended! I'm not sure how much longer we are going to nurse for, DS is already starting to loose intrest and is really only nursing 2x a day, but I plan on keeping it up until he is finished! :thumbsup2

I haven't been on this thread in months, since our trip to WDW in Aug/Sept. Our 2 wks went great and I finally managed to learn how to nurse in my Ergo!
Sadly my DS turned 1 in November and weaned himself almost a month ago. Both him & my DD weaned themselves at 13 months. It was kind of sad as I do not plan on having more, but moving on to another chapter.
I have some pictures we took of me nursing in the world. As soon as I get my photobucket account to work, I will post them.
And congrats on the 1 year milestone. It isn't always easy but so totally worth it.

Im due in May and a major goal of mine for this bb is to learn to nurse in a carrier. I was way to nervous with my son but I think with #2 i will be much more relaxed:)

Anyone currently extended nursing here? I'm nursing my 19 mo old. :)

I nursed DS til 14mts and plan on nursing this one past two.. I wish i would have let DS nurse longer. Im not listening to anyone this time..so many ppl are so negative about extended nursing, but numbers dont lie.. Its better for our babies! Great job mama!

I'm nursing my almost 20 month old right now:rotfl:

She isn't showing any signs of stopping-nurses every morning for about 30 min, as soon as I pick her up from daycare for 30 or more min, and as much as I let her all afternoon and evening, at bedtime, and usually at least once during the night.......

She is my last baby (I'm 38 and had a tubal after she was born), so I'm in no rush:)

My family is on my case to stop. I nursed ds13 for 18 mos, and stopped because dh was getting embarrassed of him trying to nurse in church:rolleyes:

Dd11 only got to nurse 4 days before I had some pretty severe health issues and had to be hospitalized for a few days. MIL had her (and my son who was 2 at the time) and had to put her on the bottle. I had to start taking some anti-seizure drugs and wouldn't risk nursing her.

With dd1 (almost 20 mos), I don't care what they say. She listens most of the time when I ttell her not right now. Tonight we went out to eat with my whole family for my niece's 18th bday, and my family is as bad as dh, so when she asked at the table I told her not right now and gave her the sippie. But as soon as we got home.......:cloud9:

I have just been skimming so forgive me if this has been posted before. I found the best ride to nurse on was in epcot, Ellen,s universe of Energy. 1) great air conditioning. 2) it is a really long ride, 3) if you are petite ( I'm 5'4" ) you can really spread out in a row, put your diaper bag on the seat, space, dh, space, your purse, space and a poncho. When the ride starts latch on, once jr is nursing away move all the luggage to the floor, use poncho as a pillow and nurse side lying. This was a great way to really drain both breasts and get a nap in as this ride is about 40min long! Hope this works for someone else!

Ya, I think its sad how many ppl are so negative about nursing past 6mts even. Its craaazy! Thinking about taking a two year old to the nursery at church to nurse is stressful, because most ppl would think you are nuts, when in fact its the best thing for them!!! My DS was down to nursing once a night when I quit, but he prolly could have went like that just nursing before bed for a long time. Good for you for sticking to your guns!

I'm still nursing my 24 mos old. He just turned 2 on the 3rd. He is only nursing once or twice a day though, now, because I am almost 17 weeks pregnant and it hurts like the dickens sometimes. LOL He is really good at listening to the "not right now". Whenever anyone bugged/bugs me about stopping before he was two and even if anyone says anything now, I just quote the AAP. For some reason everyone thinks their word is gold.

* The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that "Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child... Increased duration of breastfeeding confers significant health and developmental benefits for the child and the mother... There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer." (AAP 2005)

* The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that breastfeeding continue throughout the first year of life and that "As recommended by the WHO, breastfeeding should ideally continue beyond infancy, but this is not the cultural norm in the United States and requires ongoing support and encouragement. It has been estimated that a natural weaning age for humans is between two and seven years. Family physicians should be knowledgeable regarding the ongoing benefits to the child of extended breastfeeding, including continued immune protection, better social adjustment, and having a sustainable food source in times of emergency. The longer women breastfeed, the greater the decrease in their risk of breast cancer." They also note that "If the child is younger than two years of age, the child is at increased risk of illness if weaned." (AAFP 2008)

* A US Surgeon General has stated that it is a lucky baby who continues to nurse until age two. (Novello 1990)

* The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of nursing up to two years of age or beyond (WHO 1993, WHO 2002).

I don't have time to elaborate right now, but I couldn't DISAGREE more. One of my most stressful moments as a mom was taking a 6 month old on this ride with the intention of a dark quiet place to relax and nurse. Let's just say that after the ridiculously loud "bang" withing 5 minutes of the beginning of the show my DD was hysterical and I couldn't calm her down. DH even tried to get off the ride at one point and find an exit (and lost a shoe in the process). DD SCREAMED for the entire 40 minutes (I felt sooo horrible for the other guests). I thought I'd traumatized my DD for life or caused her permanent hearing lost (that ride is LOUD), but of course she is fine now. :)

That 40 mins felt like 4 years to me.

Congratulations on having a great nursing experience at WDW! Can't wait to see the pictures!!!

Wow what a great tip! Never would have thought you could lie down on the ride... but I guess you can.... I think I would be worried that the CM would see you on the cameras (if there are any on that ride) and make an annoucement ..... like they do if someone is standing up on a ride... but I am sure they don't care if someone is lying down....

You sound like me... this is my last baby (43! and 5 kiddos). My baby is 15 months and she is still nursing like crazy. She will take the sippy to humor me and to get through til we can nurse. She still nurses at least once at night, and I am hoping I don't have a night-time problem down the road. At this age though, I cannot deny her. The other kids weaned anywhere from 9 months to 15 months. They all seemed to lose interest on their own, but not this little girl :) Yes, I get questions and funny looks but at my age, I just don't care what people say/think. Me nursing my baby is in no way affecting them. Its our business!

I am so sorry you had a bad time. I could totally see the noise factor being a problem. I had one of those babies who could nurse thru a brass band and not even flinch! Literally, we were trying to get out during a parade on the wrong side of main street and he was nursing in my arms and he did not even budge as we crossed right in front of the brass section...my ears were ringing till we got to the monorail!

I spent most of our trip last month nursing DS.

Luckily, I learned how to nurse in the sling and just threw the cover over us, so I could walk around and ride the rides without a problem. Half of my photos from the trip look like I have a hump on my side from DS being under the cover, LOL!

One cast memeber actually asked if I had a baby under there and if she could look at him! She was a little embarassed when I told her that he was eating at the moment. It was sweet, though.

It was so cold on our trip and I tried to nurse inside a lot. One of my favorite spots was in the Seas Pavillion at Epcot. There's a room with small tanks and the touch-screen quizes. There are a lot of benches in there, and it was nice to sit in the warmth and nurse while DD ran around and looked in the tanks and "played" the quiz game.
