Official Breast Feeding Support Thread for WDW Parks

Cool! No idea this thread existed. I've nursed three babies at WDW in the last 5 years. I actually don't think there's been a trip that I haven't breastfed! Looking forward to going back through some posts on here.

What a cool thread! Great reading everyone's advice, suggestions & personal stories. Thank you!

I'm a big fan of tops that have stretch in them that I can pull down rather than pull up. Just one of the things I look for now when shopping for myself. So far my 8 month old's been okay with the BFing cover so that's what we're planning on using when we go to WDW in January.

I have a Moby carrier & I cannot for the life of me nurse with her in it. We'll continue to try until then :)

Only 5 more days! Gabriel has grown a lot since I got my RS. Gotten nearly impossible to nurse him in it. I am so STRESSED! I hope it isn't overy hot or crowded.

december- I am a short and plump dark blonde, DD, 8, has really long brown hair, DH is 5'10", broad shoulders and chest, dark hair, and I will likely be sporting DS, amost 5 mo, also built like mommy, in a brown RS, with a peter pan accent, or jogging stroller with lime green head rest!!!! What is playing at the campfire sat?

Could you ship it to a friend or relative to freeze until you get back? I've shipped frozen breastmilk using dry ice...but since you won't have a freezer, I googled. Here's what I found: http://breastfeeding.about.com/od/faqs/f/shipbreastmilk.htm

It says to use the gel packs for refrigerated milk.

I'd probably do that after a couple days and then take the rest of it home with me on the plane.

Your milk should be fine in the fridge for 7 days. Kellymom's guidelines give you as many as 8 days, and I've kept milk in the fridge for up to 9 days without spoilage. I always go by the rule of "it isn't spoiled unless it smells spoiled". Crank up the fridge (if you can) and don't open it more than you need to.

I exclusively pumped for DD for 5 months before she started nursing and I EPed for DS for a month before he'd nurse, so I've had my fair share of milk handling issues.

Thank you!! I try not to refrigerate my BM for more than 4 days, but I guess you're right- if i have to do 7 I should be ok. If I wanted to ship it back home to my family- does anyone know how? Is there a place on site (we won't have a car, staying at the Poly) to do overnight shipping? I don't see anything on the website.

Thanks! I'm just nervous too, overall. DD doesn't really like the cover, and she's very active when nursing- doesn't like to sit still. With it being hot next week and everything, I think I'm just making myself all anxious. Hopefully for no reason. So much different than how my other daughter was!

I just got back and breastfed all around the world. I used my cover and tried to go to out of the way places or in the baby care center. One funny story I was nursing my little girl on the steps right next to Tonys Town Square restaurant, I actually don't know what the steps were to, just a little porch area but no one was there. All of a sudden a little girl came over, probably around 1 and her father was mortified. He kept whispering her name trying to get her to come back and she was ignoring him. Haha, it was so cute!

Hi. I just saw this forum and as a former breastfeeding mom of 3 (they are teens now) I just wanted to say good job for nursing your babies. Don't see enough of that these days.

I'll add my two cents on the public thing...baby needs to eat when and where baby needs to eat. Keep up the good work.

I know this thread doesn't get tons of daily activity- but hoping someone might be able to help with my last minute question.

We leave early tomorrow. I plan to bring a soft-sided cooler for our trip, so I can store any bagged BM I collect this week and don't use. I know I will have a few bags at least. Our resort room doesn't have a "Freezer" in the fridge. I was planning on bringing those portable ice packs, so it would be easier/compact for traveling. I'm guessing a fridge won't keep those ice packs cold enough. I'm afraid Ice might melt since it will be a longer trip. Does anyone have any other ideas for keeping the milk cold for travel?

I'm sure I'm overthinking this- sorry. First time dealing with this!! TY for your help!

Freeze a few water bottles over night tonight and put them in the bag with the BM. You will be surprised at how long those bottles stay frozen in the insulated bags.

Have fun!

I know it can get expensive, but they have the instant cold packs in the first aid section of the store that get really cold. I'm not sure how long they'd last, though.

Are you driving or flying? If you are driving, dry ice is also an option, but you'd have to bring a hard-sided cooler. Publix sells it.

Are you meaning keep the milk cold for the return trip home? If so, I think what I would do is put your freezer packs in your soft sided cooler, if it will fit in the fridge, and load it down with ice overnight. This will get it as cold as possible, and then change the ice in the morning.

If the cooler won't fit in the fridge, then I would just put the freezer packs in some other container, your ice bucket, the sink, whatever, and load it down with ice and put them in the cooler in the morning with more ice. You can check it every so often on your trip and either add more ice by buying it at a gas station, or asking resturants that you stop at if you can have a cup or two of ice.

FYI-If you are flying they may take away your cold packs. They let mine go through on the way to MCO from Newark but on the return trip MCO took them. This was 2 years ago though.

Ladies, what do you use for breastmilk storage at home?

I pump once a day, basically just to have that extra bottle for when I'm out running errands and I've saddled DH with the kids. ;)

I usually don't have any excess, but on the rare occasion that I do, we've been keeping it in the fridge. The problem is that we're not using it within a week, and then I have to dump it, which is such a waste.

I've been thinking of freezing it, which would work so much better, but am wondering what to use. Do you use the freezer bags? I see that Medela also makes little bottles that can be frozen. How do you bring them to room temp after?

Any help is appreciated. :goodvibes

I use the Lansinoh freezer bags. Freeze them flat for easier storage, and don't move them around too much. The bags may leak if you move them around and they hit each other or other things.

The easiest way to thaw the bags is to run them under warm water or put them in a bowl of warm water. The great thing about freezing the bags flat is that they thaw so quickly.

Thanks. :goodvibes That sounds like they'd be the easiest to defrost.

I used to freeze the milk in bags in about 2-4oz increments. I stored the frozen milk in an upright freezer in an additional Ziploc freezer bag with the approximate timeframe that I pumped written on the freezer bag with a sharpie to ensure the oldest were used first. When I wanted to use the milk, I would place the frozen milk in hot water to defrost it. I would then shake it gently to mix the milk and then pour it into a bottle. Hope this helps! :goodvibes

Thank you, it definitely helps. I'm planning to do 2 oz increments, just because I don't get a ton when I pump. Writing the exact timeframe on is a great idea, that way we'll know when it needs to be used by.

DD was 10 mos old when we went last year. Even though she was a little "big" to babywear I did use my moby some.....she's a snuggler. She didn't need it to stay on my hip (she holds on) but I used it to give the illusion of cover. I always wore a nursing tank and either a button up shirt or a wrap knit shirt over that. Thankfully at 10 months....I only had to nurse her once or twice a day in the park.....but it was nice to be "dressed" for the occasion.

Also, funny, I nursed her in Mickey's Filharmonic.....and the lady next me was nursing her 7 mo old!
