Official Birthday/Anniversary Cake thread Part II

Not to cause you problems with your wife, but you may want to create another account that she won't recognize. That way you can ask all the questions you want & she'll still be surprised. :)

The anniversary cake, I think we're all set on. I've talked to the folks at Jiko's (already...and she knows THAT part, so I'm good) and I think I'm OK there.

It's the KIDS cakes that have got me stumped. Anniversary cakes seem to be relatively simple to arrange. I can do tiered with fondant, even as much of a noob as I am at this.

I'm just wondering if they can or are capable of doing anything a bit more elaborate, and if so....what? A pirate ship? A pirate chest? Something fun and whimsical....

I don't know if any of you watch "Ace of Cakes" (I'm betting there are a few fans around the thread), but something in that vein. Maybe not even as elaborate.

I'll call the cake line coming up in a couple weeks...we have LOTS of time, obviously..but I was hoping maybe for some direction from the people in this thread (who seem to know their cakes pretty darn well) so I don't look like a complete moron when making the call. :)

I've asked before but didn't get response, so I apologize for the repeat question. I need to make a decision ASAP.

Has anyone recently been able to convince the GF Bakery to do something other than choc/choc or van/van on an 8 inch cake?

It's only my DS and myself so even that size is too big but I am willing to do it if I could get an alternate filling. The mini castle cake is just not a great value, just can't make myself pull the trigger on it. The glass slipper dessert has significance as our anniversary thing to do so I don't want to do it on a trip without DH.

We're staying at WL and their 8 in cakes are definitely just the two varieties.

Thanks for letting me know if you've gotten a customized 8 in recently! If you have other ideas, please let me know! I really want to celebrate in some way but feel a bit hampered by the options ... my DS has a heart condition and wasn't expected to live to be 5. I've been promising him this mom and me trip since he was two and he was too ill to go last year when we originally planned it.

I had an 8 inch chocolate with peanut butter filing, chocolate frosting and pink fondant cake from the GF in August 2008. I simply asked for that size and my requested fillings. The cost was around $85, but that included both the additional cost for fondant and the chocolate slipper decorating the top. It should be arounf $45-$55 without the added decor.

I remember you did answer me last time but I misunderstood what size cake you got. Thank you for answering again!

I spoke with GF last week and ordered an 8" with yellow cake, white chocolate mousse filling, pink fondant and Cinderella's slipper on top for our trip next week. It is $62 +tax & gratuity ~ $32 for the cake and then $30 for the decorations

I'm glad your anniversary planning is going good for you. :thumbsup2 Hopefully, someone can answer your other questions.

sorry if I missed something but I'm unclear despite the 350+ pages of info in both threads (although I didn't read them all!)

1. If we have DDP can we use dessert credits towards a cake? Double dessert seems a bit much.

2. We really can't have a cake delivered to our cabin at FW awaiting us upon arrival? That's a bummer as it is our one non DDP night!

3. We have ADR's at the following places. Almost all are NOT on the list of restaurants with a direct line, does that mean they cannot do a cake?

Boma
Kona
Hoop De Do
Prime Time
Teppan Edo
Biergarten.

Of those, Kona and Prime Time seem like the best place to try and have one but....any idea's?

4. I have read about the mickey cupcake, what is that? We plan to celebrate 2 birthdays while at WDW although neither are actually during our trip. We typically celebrate them both on valentines day (mine is 2/7 and DH's is 3/4 which we will be at Kona on. While I know we don't qualify for any of the official "celebrate" items, given this years theme is there anything they would do or am I on my own for a cake?

5. If all else fails...can I request a candle in something?

:)

Thanks!

Will you have a car? (I'm only asking, because you said you could pick it up.) If so, you may want to check out www.Publix.com We order all our cakes from there. They're delicious! If you won't have transportation, other than Disney's, the only place that I know of for sure that offers pickup is Boardwalk Bakery. Maybe, someone else can offer more suggestions.

Yes we will have a car
We got a b'day cake from Publix before when we were there for my mum's 60th .. i just really fancied 1 of these Disney ones for my DD so ordering from the Boardwalk Bakery and picking it up is great .. Thanks very much for the info :thumbsup2

Sorry i have another question
Are all the cakes Buttercream icing?
Neither my DD or myself like buttercream icing would much prefer fondant or something like that .. does anyone know the answer to this??
TIA

You can get fondant if you order at the GF. BUT... they put buttercream under the fondant to hold it in place. You would have to work this out with the restaurant/bakery.

We're also celebrating our DS's birthday on Valentine's Day. That's his birth date though. It's great that the timing works out so well for you guys to celebrate both birthdays that day. :goodvibes I can't find any info on special cakes/treats for the "What will you celebrate" promotion. Everyone may be eligible. Who knows? It would be nice, if they'd post more info. As for the DDP question, I've only heard of one restaurant, WPC, taking dessert, dining credits as payment for a cake.

We ordered DH's birthday cake from Boardwalk Bakery. I don't care for buttercream either, but they offered white chocolate frosting and that is what we chose. It was wonderful!!

Thanks to both of you

J.C and Ali's mom ... Was your cake all chocolate? Do you have a pic of it?

I'm looking at maybe getting a chocolate cake but wanted a pic on it or something like that as is for my DD's 11th ..

There is some What Will You Celebrate? Information here:

I think it is somewhere on a Disney site too... I know I have seen it... The link above is for Disneyland... but I'm sure there is something like it for Disneyworld.

Thanks for sharing the link. :) WDW's description of cakes available is vague to say the least. It's basically what has been posted here for awhile. It would be nice if they would create a website showcasing cakes to order. As we all know, ordering custom cakes is extremely YMMV at this time.

Does anyone know if all the bakeries only make 8' cakes in all one flavor? For example I called the Boardwalk Bakery today and asked to order an 8' cake, they said it can either be all vanilla or all chocolate. Makes me feel like the only people who get "disney magic" are the ones that are able to pay $$$ for it :(

Kristin - sadly, that seems to be the case. I wanted a white cake with chocolate frosting and I HAD to go up to the 10" cake. :sad2: I even spoke to a chef about it and didn't get anywhere. $45 does seem like a lot for a cake, but I wanted DH to enjoy his birthday, so I did it.

An 8' Cake!!!
I can't imagine how much that would cost or how many people it would feed!!

:rotfl2: :lmao:

I wouldn't mind seeing an 8' cake! :cake:

With lots of icing......
