Official Birthday/Anniversary Cake thread Part II

My family and I are going to WDW in January. While we're there my mom will be celebrating a birthday, and my brother's birthday is soon after we arrive home. So, I want to get one cake for both of them. Is it possible to get both their names on the cake AND two different characters (their respective favorites)?

Also, we're staying at Coronado Springs. Does this resort have it's own bakery? If not, how much is the delivery fee to have a cake delivered (if this is even possible)? Would it be possible for us to go pick up the cake on the desired day?

I have decided to order a cake from the GF bakery and just pick it up on the way to WL as it's not far.

Does anyone know? I plan on going there and ordering my cake 8 days before we need it be I really want to see what I am getting. Can I choose the pick up time? That being 5:15PM ish. And do they have cake tastings, I'm a bit of a picky eater and if I'm going to spend something like $40 on a cake for only 2 people, it had better be the taste I want. I'm not looking for anything big to taste, simple bite sized cake and dollop of icing should work...

Winnie,
Is it a cheesecake or a cake flavored like cheesecake?
Thanks!

It is a tiny cheese cake covered with butter creme icing. It is the size of a cup cake.

Again, it was really tasty. The icing is what made it too sweet for hubby. He scrapped off some of the icing and liked it better. Me, I loved it all!! Bring on the butter creme!!

Blessings,
Winnie

Read a post about how Sara Lee cakes taste & look at Coral Reef: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1857118 - It's post #6.

What the poster said was "After our meal the cake I ordered was served along with candles and a chorus of Happy Birthday. It was a fantastic experience and worth the calls, e-mails, more calls. Oh and by the way. The cake was the six inch dreaded Sara Lee. It was chocolate/chocolate, decorated with strawberries and chocolate Happy Birthday signs. It was moist and delicious, not frozen or dry. We were very pleased. "
That poster would be me.:goodvibes We got home on the 28th, but I've been sick for about a week or more. Tropical Storm Fay didn't let up and I guess I got drenched too many times. Oh well back on topic. I ordered the 6 inch chocolate/chocolate when I spoke to Debbi about the diver and menues months before we arrived. It was a pretty little cake :cake:and I was told by the server that it indeed was a Sara Lee. Now maybe she was mistaken, so I would be, I'm not sure. :confused3 But the cake was moist and delicious and more than enough for 3. Since we were celebrating an adult birthday the cake was decorated with fresh plump strawberries and had the birthday banners you see placed onto some of the celebration desserts. Whatever the case, if you want something simple at the CR, this would be perfect. We really enjoyed our whole experience.:thumbsup2

Unfortunately GF Bakery is not a walk - in business - - so in order to get a confection from the GF Bakery you must be dining in a GF Restaraunt, ie Narcoosies, Victoria&Alberts, 1900 Park Fare, Grand Tea, or probably the Grand Cafe (not 100% sure, 99% tho!)

The only cake tastings that they do are for their Weddings - with their wedding planners, you can read about that in the Wedding Forum here on the Dis...

I do understand your hesitancy in spending upwards of $40 for something you have no idea, and having to trust the reviews of strangers, so it may not be to your liking... you can order from bakeries at Boardwalk, in the Magic Kingdom (no cakes there tho) but again, I've not heard them giving samples.... and I was one of the first to stand up and yell, dont get a cake from the podium, those were prefrozen and awful... I did get the custom 8" $25 cake and was well pleased... and after doing a Bridal Cake tasting with my son and future daughter in law - it was the worst cake EVER!! I do understand.
We get the slipper dessert at Grand Tea, and we've gotten a cake at 1900 Park fare, both we asked to have it "to go" with no problems. (after we've eaten our food - hope this makes sense, and i'm not making it more complicated!)

but after the pre frozen "podium 6" cake" at MK I researched and found that the best cakes were at GF and you had to be eating AT the GF - so I arranged to do that - and it truly lived up to the reviews here. Last year we did the MK custom 8" cake, and I wasnt expecting much - it was a good cake, not as great as the GF cake, but it was well worth the $25 imho

Per the Sara Lee Cake at CR - how much did it cost? TIA

GF's bakery doesn't allow pick ups. Their cakes are for guests of their resort or restaurants. I saw the foam finger cake a couple pages back but that must have been a very special exception ... or they are more accommodating when it comes to wedding planning. She is the first person to report being able to pick up a cake in the 2-plus years I have been reading/participating on this thread which is about anniversary and birthday cakes. Maybe something has changed recently that I don't know about but Disney has been reducing services rather than expanding them lately.

I've never heard of cake tastings being offered for regular cakes. Maybe call them directly to discuss your special needs? Perhaps they'd let you sit in on a wedding tasting or something, if they offer them?

ETA: that'll teach me to start a post then take a break before finishing it. Sandy, of course, is totally right and my post is redundant.

That's very interesting... the Grand Floridian Bakery makes that cake for the wedding cake tasting too (although the samples are so dried out from the fridge, that probably had something to do with your reaction. :rotfl:)

All 6-inch cakes now cost $21, whether they're Sara Lee or Disney-made. Judging by your experience with the at-the-podium cakes, it may well turn out that the Sara Lee cakes are an improvement over the in-house ones! :lmao:

I think you are right and that the only reason she was able to pick up the cake was that it was arranged through Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings... which is funny because when you look at how much they charge you to get married, the least they could do is deliver the dang groom's cake for you! :rotfl2:

I was able to pick up a cake from the GF bakery in October 2006. I'm pretty sure they made an exception for me though, and mine was the last cake I read of here that was able to be picked up.

I'd guess that groom's cake was able to be picked up because of the Fairy Tale Weddings as others have pointed out.

$%^%$&^$%^&%##@!!!!
Urgh, so frustrating! I really wish WL had better cake options!!! I have two GF restaurant ADRs but the Grand Tea Room ressie is right before MNSSHP on the 16th and one week before the birthday. And the Narcoossee's ressie is on the 28th, 5 days after the birthday.

I'll probably go for the small castle cake for the Garden View Tea room on the 16th. I couldn't imagine not having a custom cake and I have heard from multiple sources that the last minute, order at the podium cake isn't up to par. Next year I know to make sure we dine at the GF on any birthdays.

Does anyone know if we don't finish the cake and need to take it with us to MK during the MNSSHP, can I fit it in a locker, would it be safe, not melt or anything? Any other suggestions? Could I have it held for me at the GF if I'm not staying there?

I really appreciate everyone's help!

Just wanted to update that Linda emailed me today to let me know that the chef will make our cake! They're gonna do the Mickey ears in the scrollwork for me too.

It's $55. I'm not sure how many people it serves, but she kept referring to it as the "anniversary topper" so I am thinking it would be whatever size they usually do for that.

I wonder if they'll put any kind of cake topper on it? It'd be SUPER cool if they made our 'K' monogram out of sugar or something. Another thing, the chef said that my picture of the cake looked like it had fondant on it...it didn't though! I guess my cake lady for the wedding just made the buttercream really super smooth. I've never had fondant before, so I hope it tastes good! The chef is going to use fondant for this recreation.

I'll be sure to take some pics! We'll be back on Monday night so look for them next week.

We are back and the Mickey Head cake from POP was a big hit. I have not down loaded my pics yet. I will post one when I do. The cake was a little dry but not bad. The frosting was wonderful. I am not sure what it was, it was like melted chocolate but not fondant. When all is said and done I would get it again.

I thought I could order a mini castle cake from the GF bakery for my dinner at the GFcafe? I just called and the lady (not very nice at all) told me they didn't make a mini castle cake and I could order a mini wedding cake with a flower on top :confused3 Is there an email address I can send a picture to one of the chefs and maybe get the castle cake instead of the mini wedding cake?

Thanks

I think this is just a misunderstanding and I'd call back and try again.

Techincally, it is a mini-wedding cake but you would like the white chocolate mini castle topper on top.

This cake was featured on the Food Network show about Fairytale weddings so maybe when you call back you can mention that. The bride had one for each guest.

Good luck!

I ordered 2 mini castle cakes three weeks before we left. The woman I spoke to wasn't very polite but she knew what I was talking about. She also took my CC # to guarantee the order. Only problem was when we got to the GF Cafe they knew nothing about it. Thank goodness a CM over my frustation and said they we just talking about it that morning. Seems they spelled my last name wrong. So after our fantastic breakfast they brought "it" out. Yes they only had one. Which was okay with me since my DD kept reminding me the whole trip. "It's not my birthday yet." Darn teenagers. So it was "Happy Birthday to me.":) Just call back and speak with someone else. It will work out. And by the way check your order before you go.:thumbsup2
Linda

For those saying they talked to someone at GF that wasn't very nice at all, call back and ask to speak with Linda. She is great and answered all my questions. I had special requests and she talked to the chef for me and let me know that they'd be able to accomodate me. I totally recommend her. Also, remember that if you get frustrated, it might make them frustrated, which makes them less eager to help you out. I've learned you're more likely to get what you want when you're super nice than when you're not. Good luck with your cakes! I can't wait to see ours on Sunday. :woohoo:

Is the white castle cake too girly for my ds13?

what other options will I have at 1900 Park Fare for a boy?

Hello,
I just ordered my brithday cake for Boma's tomorow evening..Yes, I said tomorow. I could not believe they let me order it so last minute. I kept hemming and hawing whether I wanted to have one or not. I figured, Hey I'm turning 50! Why not!!

I ordered a 1/4 sheet cake. Marble cake with amaretto creme in between layers with Zebra icing. I told them to decorate with chocolate roses and maybe a hunny pot for POOH! I told them to be imaginative and fun with it! So we'll see. I'll try to post a pic next week when we get home.

Oh, and they quoted me $55 plus tax.

Blessings,
Winnie
