My question is why did we not hear people saying this last year when an unwed Mother won AI? It seems to me that following the 'you must be perfect to be an American Idol' logic, someone who had a child out of wedlock doesn't really fit that bill either.

Shmoogrrrl: Everyone's entitled to their opinion so I'll go ahead and state mine: Your comments about single mothers was the most ridiculous and insulting thing I've read here in a while. :sad2: Women can CHOOSE to have children on their own or as part of a relationship. Even the term "unwed mother" sounds so ancient. C'mon...there is absolutely nothing controversial about single parents unless you're still stuck in the 80's.

Count me in on the 40 somethings that love Constantine, his look, his hair and his singing!

Hi!!! Nice to meet you.

Maybe we should start a club for those of us who love Constantine  , I'll volunteer to be the President, LOL!!! :rotfl: <I'm just kidding, I think>

<note to self: must get over this fascination with Con or I'll be divorced>

As for Scott: Not sure how I feel about them letting him stay. I can understand that since he was upfront with the producers of AI, they are letting him stay in the competition. I just don't know...........

From what I have read on other boards, the story that is out isn't really what happened. I guess we will have to believe that AI knows what really happened and we will have to trust their judgement.

Really? That's interesting. Yea, I thought "well AI knew about it, he wasn't hiding something" and I know we are only human and people do make mistakes so I don't care if he's still in the competition.

Sandy 22, I don't think Shmoogrrrl was meaning to be insulting, but merely bringing up the fact that since Fantasia wasn't married there may have been controversy over the fact that she had a child. The thing was there really were a lot of people who didn't want her to win because of this fact. Whether or not anyone on the thread believes that as well is their opinion, but even though discriminating because of this may seem antiquated, it was still an issue last year. :confused3 I guess to each their own. I just didn't like her voice. ;) But then again, I really didn't like anyone in season 3! :)

You mean, it's not "his" story. The smoking gun website has all of the court documents, so I kinda doubt that they're made up.

Sad to hear about Scott's "checkered" past. I agree there's no excuse for domestic violence, and he should have just walked away.

Having said that, I've always been taught that everyone makes mistakes, and we all deserve a second chance ("Judge not, lest thou also be judged."). I'm not excusing what he did; as I said, there is no excuse. But this happened four years ago. He pleaded guilty, paid his fine, and hasn't had anymore problems since then (that we know of, anyway). He also admitted it to the AI producers, as required.

Personally, I'll vote for Scott if/when I feel that he gives the best performance of the night, just as I would for any other contestant. If anything like this should happen again, then I'd say drop him.

From USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2005-03-31-idol-arrest_x.htm):

Arrest won't cost 'Idol' finalist
From staff reports

A previous arrest won't cost American Idol finalist Scott Savol his chance to continue in the hit Fox singing competition. Thesmokinggun.com Web site Thursday posted a Shaker Heights, Ohio, police report citing Savol's arrest following a 2001 altercation with the mother of his then-infant son.

Savol, 28, one of nine remaining Idol finalists, had previously told Idol producers of the misdemeanor disorderly conduct conviction that resulted from the incident.

According to a statement issued by Fox and Idol producers Thursday night: "Scott Savol was forthcoming to the American Idol producers and the network regarding his misdemeanor.

After reviewing the facts, in which the charges were reduced to disorderly conduct, we felt that considering Scott's honesty and his remorse, the situation did not warrant his disqualification."

Looks like Scott's staying.

Good news!

Well if he stays I sure hope no one plans on voting for him!! He has no right being there because anyone who acts that way is no American Idol.

Well I'm voting for him. What happened to everyone whining that people were voting based on past history and not talent? I have always voted for Scott for his voice and will continue to do so.

You are right in that there is nothing wrong with a single mom but you wouldn't know it by all the whining and complaining last year on this board about Fantasia. You must have missed it where many Disers proclaimed sainthood. At least the saints have returned this year to bash Scott.

Domestic violence is never excusable, but I think it's a stretch to say we are sending a bad message to our children by "idolizing" someone with a conviction in their past. Don't make me list the number of celebrities and politicians with checkered pasts. What about the message give people another chance at life? Is he destined to work at the local carwash for the rest of his life because of a mistake when he was young? No fame, fortune or opportunity for you, you went to jail once!

We all do stupid things because of emotion, drugs or alcohol. When I told my ex I was leaving the marriage, he did the same thing to me that Scott did to his gf (grabbed my rings, called me names). Is my ex a bad person? Absolutely not, this was the only time he ever treated me badly. But add alcohol with emotion and things get tricky. God forbid my past or anyone else's hold us accountable for the rest of our lives. I for one already know I'm not going into politics. ;)

BRAVO BRAVO!!! I have a friend who deals with this on a daily basis. 1 conviction 8 years ago (not sex, drug or violence related) and she can't get a job to save her life. If we as a society expect these people to learn their lessons and go on with their lives then we can't keep holding them down. Let him be an example of how to use your talents to pull your life out of the crapper and do something with it. There are dozens of rappers and rock stars who parade around glorifying violence and continuing to carry guns. There are a small handful (actually I can think of only 1) who admit to being in gangs in their youths and now speak out against the violence. Who's the better role model here? The one who never got caught or the one who was busted but turned his life around?

As for Scott, he owned up to it long before the rest of us knew and apparently there isn't anything else in his record since or we'd know about that too. Sounds to me like he's trying to put his life back in order. The entire country knows now that he has a violent past and he'll never live it down. Let the guy go on with his life people. He's moved beyond that, why can't you?

Look, if someone abused someone else, they don't deserve sympathy. And you BET I'll be judgemental about it. I've been one of those abused women. So have my sister and my mother.

This is not a small thing. And guess what, most women do NOTprovoke a man to hitting her. Some men are just abusive SOB's. I can't believe that was even stated and I'm going to explode from the anger at it. To the person that said that, GROW UP. I NEVER asked my exhusband to abuse me just as my sister and mother never asked for their men to do it to them.

Now... Scott never hid the fact that he pled guilty to abuse. Good. Fine. Now he can win the competition on his own merits. He won't be booted because he was up front about it. This competition is based on talent. It's not based on who can backstab each other better like the other reality tv shows.

Can we move on with another topic please?

I know it is American Idol..but since when did it become the Miss/Mr America pageant..."only clean cut, wholesome young people need apply."

If only saints can get recording deals--it's going to be very quiet on the radio.

It doesn't take a saint to know that violence against women is wrong, does it ? There is a helluva long distance between making a mistake (getting involved with drugs at a young age, say) and domestic violence.

Sorry, there is no excuse. I'm no angel, but I have no problem judging someone that would do such a thing. Vote all you want, I'd rather give my vote to someone that deserves it.

Domestic violence is VERY wrong. There's no denying that. But I don't go for the "one strike, you're out" mentality either. I'm glad that he's staying.

Knowing the American public, if this gets much bigger, he will be out next no matter how well he sings. I am happy that he confessed it and everything but it was wrong. I do think he deserves a second chance but he should have been out anyway instead of Jessica. His song was very very pitchy. Anyway, I think that he did the right thing by confessing it and admitting he was wrong. I do agree that domestic violence is very wrong, but we need to forgive. We shouldn't judge people that we don't know. Now, I agree that Idols should be very very good role models but at least he isn't promoting drugs and such, like many current celebrities. He was honest, and he was sorry for his action, we need to look at that.

Here's the way I look at it with the whole "Scott fiasco". Yes, what he did was extremely wrong and he deserved to be punished and he was. As far as we can tell he has learned from his mistake. He was upfront about it to AI and they let him through. If they don't have a problem with it then who am I to say he shouldn't be there? People can and DO change everyday. I am glad that when I make a mistake people don't just assume this is who I am and that I don't deserve a 2nd chance. I am not at all saying what he did was right, but I agree with whoever said that isn't it interesting that this is just coming out now? Why not tell everyone about it before he was even voted into the top 12? The media is all about causing uproars and ruining reputations. And yes, I know that Scott ruined his reputation by doing it to begin with but it was 4 years ago and he has been trying to turn his life around. So why does the media insist on turning him into a monster all of a sudden? Well, obviously b/c it will increase their ratings and cause quite the scandal. Seems to be working too. They are letting Scott stay in the competition and I am glad. I don't think I am in any position to judge someone I have never met...esp. since it was in his past and he has not had any more incidents since. I have known people with pretty terrible pasts that have done some things that I will not mention that have straightened their lives out. It happens.

Why get so bent out of shape over it? If you don't like what he did then don't vote for him...it's that simple! I don't forsee him being around much longer b/c of this very thing. I believe that article is going to cost him a lot of his support and it will be the reason he is voted off. So, I say vote for him if you want to and don't vote for him if you don't want to. It's America's votes that count, isn't it? So, let the voting decide!
