Official all things Princess Half Weekend 2015 thread! DOoneY and offical mErcH on DisneyParksBLOg

In regards to the 5K not being timed, does this mean there are no balloon ladies/sweeping? I'm training 2-3 minutes below the 16mm pace but just wondering since these are my first races.

Anyone else feeling way under trained??

This year no, but last year, which was my first half, I was panicking a bit at this point. November had me recovering from a calf tear and Achilles tendinitis, December I had sick kids and the holidays constantly messing my plans up, January started ok, then I got a raging case of IT band syndrome. But, the adrenaline and atmosphere of the races really pushed me through. I just had to let go of my hopes of finishing under two hours, and look at it as finishing both the 10k and half was going to be victory enough, time didn't matter, as long as I didn't get swept.

You still have a month, which means you should still be able to get in 3 long runs. Just do what you can to make yourself feel as ready as possible. I think if you can train to 9 or 10 miles and get in a couple of other runs during the week you'll be surprised just how ready you are for race day.

Anyone else feeling way under trained??

Yes. I have been battling injuries and illness for months. And I hate running on my treadmill. I have accepted that as long as I finish I will be happy. I may walk a lot more than I hoped and I may not get to stop as much. I am hoping for decent corral placement and adrenaline to get me though. I have remained active, just not running as much as I like.

This is my boat. I know I've got enough time, but I'm not as comfortable as I was last year.

Anyone else feeling way under trained??

Definitely! Haha. I won't complain again about coming back from my injury to spare you all ;) But, like others have said, adrenaline is a monster! I figure if I did TOT in really bad shape, having only hit 8 miles prior to the race, and still finished with a 12/min pace, I can do this! Currently sticking to two 2mile runs and one long run + a healthy dose of cross-training barre class.

But on this note - did anyone else see an article on twitter by runners world yesterday discussing how many miles are needed to train for each distance?

http://www.runnersworld.com/running-tips/how-many-miles-a-week-should-i-run

Now, 30 a week for a half marathon I can see towards the end of training. But honestly, 25 miles a week for a 5k?? That just doesn't seem reasonable for an average runner. They split them as "elite" and "the rest of us" but it sounds more like a goal for a 5k specialist really trying to hit speed numbers. For most people it sounds like an easy way to injure yourself!

My DD and I aren't really liking the lack of long runs in the runDisney training plan, so we are modifying here toward the end. Trying to get a few more long runs in. My other plans include three long runs and then a cut back week. I'm also working on modifying the 10k plan, as well. I love following Runner's World on Twitter. I find the articles helpful. Still stalking.

Ran the Star Wars half this last weekend, what a blast! Discovered something though, that may or may not apply to a DW event. We started in the last corral (E) unfortunately. We just started running halfs so we didn't have times to submit! Anyway, all the character lines were LONG! We planned on one photo - Darth Vader. Line took about 30 minutes, and the balloon lady passed us while we were waiting! :scared1: According to the bicycle pacers, we had about one mile to catch her before we reached the first sweep point, at the exit the park. Needless to say, we really pushed it after the photo, and we were only to mile four of the 13 to be run!

Anyway, got the picture with Darth, and the balloon lady, and had a fun time for the remaining nine miles. We do the Galloway run-walk-run method, and love it. Never really thought we would be able to run a half, and we are actually considering the Dopey next January!

I agree - the one they posted today about making your own peanut butter I loved! I'm excited to try their yoga poses too since my feet get so sore walking around the parks. And I actually use their training plans - which I have found to be great (up until now). Sadly I'm doing the opposite and taking the runs down a notch so I don't aggravate my leg too much.

I'm glad you are stalking too because it reassures me if I miss it then these boards won't! I just received the shipping email for our tutus for the 5k and that magicbands shipped. Just need the half bib number and I am all set!

Technically, there is a max 16:00/mile limit, but I've never seen it enforced in the 5K. So long as you're moving and uninjured, they've let people continue. I took over an hour last year, around a 21:xx mile avg, walked most and stopped for lots of pics.

I really think this is why folks like Jeff Galloway and John Bingham have made such an impact - lots of folks aren't in it to post spectacular times; they just want to finish! And there's no need to tack on a bunch of extra mileage for that. :thumbsup2

Hi I am new to this thread and NEW to run Disney.

As for being undertrained YES! i am in a bit of a panic! We are running the Enchanted 10k as a family. (myself, DH, DD15 and DS12) When we signed up we were worried about DS being able to do it but we figured we had many months to train him. He is High Functioning Autism but has the motor plannoing part of it so he tends to be a bit slow.

Over Thanksgiving I had a pretty bad injury. I completely tore one hamstring tendon in my leg and partially tore another in the same leg. Pure panc set in as far as will I need surgery and how am I going to run this race. Thankfully my dr wants to wait until the 6 month mark and see how I heal. As for the race he said I am ok enough to walk it. Which at this point I am just happy he ok'd! I have given up on the thought of actually running it and maybe having an ok time but now I am freaked about being sweeped! I have started work on my treadmill and by 3 miles my leg is really tight. I still have a month so between physical therapy and just walking on the treadmill I hope to build my endurance.

To add insult to injury about 2 weeks after I got hurt my son broke his foot! He is out of the boot now and healed fine and can start to train. Though with his normal slow pace and now the injury I am really nervous he will get swept.

I know we are in the last corral and I know to get upfront but move to the side so the runners can get by.

All of that said I have heard that at some point in the race the sweepers just let you keep going if you fall behind? Does anyone know where that point is for the Enchanted 10k?

Hi I'm new here and running the princess half. I'm feeling untrained because of an injury I got from my last half. Does any have ideas for cross training? Thanks

I have two lists. One upstairs, taped to my closet door. One downstairs by the computer. As I think of something, it goes on a list. Just read the article linked above about mileage. Running the mileage listed for a half would leave me over trained. I've done that and it doesn't work for me. What works for me is three running days a week; two shorter runs and one long run.

DD and I have piles started vs the suitcase out for packing. Anybody else doing this?

Yes! Went through my summer clothes and my disney shirts and set them aside :) I'm still a little torn on what clothes to pack, I've only ever been in September and then it's ONLY shorts and tshirts/tank tops.

I find it best to wait and look at a weather report a few days out and then decide if I need shorts, capris or pants. We have had a couple of cooler years, but mostly warm..shorts and swim suits!

I'm planning on packing a little bit of everything. I just want to be prepared. I'll look at the weather forecast and make changes accordingly.

I had some IT band issues last year between the PHM and a local half marathon in June. I swam a ton to replace running until I figured out that a) it was an IT band issue and not a tear; and 2) I could knock it out with the foam roller. Highly recommend swimming, if that's a possibility for you!

Do this!!! I watched the weather for marathon weekend and when I left home, I felt silly packing all these pants, sweatshirts, jackets and gloves because the forecast was so warm. First day at Disney was 86 degrees, but that changed quickly - it was in the high 30s when I left Poly for the 5K several days later. Even for the PHM last year, I wore jeans and a track jacket one night and then was super warm in a short run shirt, PHM shirt and flip flops just a couple days later. I usually love to pack light, but for this I say bring everything! So I no longer trust the forecast - I use it as a guide, but still throw in a little bit of everything for running events.

Top half of my costume arrived today!

I am feeling super undertrained and nervous but I will WORK IT OUT. :smooth:
