Official 2016 Star Wars Half Marthon - The Dark Side Weekend

January Training Report

How's everyone doing for training? I saw monthly mileage reports on the Marathon Weekend thread and thought we could do the same here. Here is my January report...

Total Miles: 163.7 miles
Total Time: 25:27:44
Average Pace: 9:20/mi

That is seriously impressive! I ended Jan with 70 miles. I can't figure out in Runkeeper how to tell my average pace exactly, but it's somewhere in the 10:30/ mi range.

I was excited to run this morning - it's the temperature is 3 times as warm as it was when I ran last weekend. Gotta love Michigan! And that's some serious miles!

I did 51.14 Miles in January. I really didn't run a ton since I did the Star Wars - Light Side 5K + Rebel Challenge since I've only done 4 runs since then. Have to get serious this week as we have Princess Glass Slipper in less than 3 weeks!

January has been a reset for me - week and a half of company travel then hit with a cold. Finally on the way back up after almost 2 weeks plus running partner is in China till the end of the week. I'm going in with a positive attitude saying this is just my downtime and rest period. This will be our first back to back weekend, but we've each done several halves (she's over 10 and think I'm at 6 or 7) with my last race an untrained 10K in Thanksgiving, so we'll be fine, just have to get down to it in Feb!

I'll keep mine to just mileage. The majority were run during Marathon Weekend and recovery and icy weather delayed me getting back into a good training rhythm.

January total miles: 88.01

Same here!! Figured I had earned a bit of downtime. I like to follow this 10wk program for a half anyway, which has me officially starting in a week or so. :)

I took a bit of a break after running Dopey this month (the training burned me out a bit), but I'm going to get serious again this week. Not really worried because I know I can get back to half marathon shape soon enough! Does that sound arrogant? It isn't meant to be, I just mean that I've got a good base and just need to get back into a routine after a break. :)

I'm not going to this this year, but I look forward to hearing all of your recaps when it's over! I'm a teacher, so going to runDisney races is tough, but I just found out today that next year's Dark Side weekend is the week of my Spring Break (assuming it doesn't for some reason change). I'm excited about the chance to go to an event without having to take personal days! Although I would have to leave immediately the same day as the half marathon (I'd be interested in doing the challenge), since school resumes the day after.

I've only been doing rD races since 2013, but have done 5 in that time and monitored all of them since. I've never known them to CHANGE an event date once they publicize their calendar. :)

Not positive, but this does conflict with Boston on its current weekend, I'm sure there are others here that have input. But I also have read elsewhere that the weekend was going to be different dates next year.

Ah - I didn't realize that. Guess we'll see...

The dates for next year's Dark Side weekend have already been released on the 2016-17 RunDisney calendar. I looked up the date for Boston as well, and they do not conflict. Boston is April 17, and Dark Side is April 20-23, so a week later than this year. I don't think Boston was the reason for the date change though; the previous weekend is when Easter is next year (April 16). No way is Disney doing a race on Easter weekend, and the week before that is probably a busier Spring Break time.

I'm not going to post numbers to the training report because I'm not doing the 1/2 - just the 10K. Plus, I run/walk in the slow range - definitely not a serious runner like most of the folks here. :)

But we've hit a couple of snags since training started. The DH has been wanting to do this race with me, but it looks like that might not be possible due to some health issues. He's pretty upset - has had to drop out of a few training runs. I feel upset because I either have to drop out or go without him. So yeah. It's not been a great month. Hoping that February gets a bit better.

Sorry - that stinks! :( Any chance he might be able to walk it?

Thank you. We're both kind of bummed about it, but doing our best to put a plan into place no matter what the situation. :)

Here's a question - how feasible is it to completely walk a Disney race? It's a possibility he could walk it, but since we've never done anything like this before I wasn't sure how realistic it was to think "dude, just walk!"

I think it all depends on your walking speed and corral placement. If you can get in a higher corral and can def stick to the time requirements, why not. May mean no pictures, but if you can do it, go for it! For the DL Half my running partner injured herself a few miles in so we walked a good part of it. We were aware of other runners and kept moving and never were I jeopardy of being swept.

Very feasible. Just as long as you stay within the time limit (and remember the 16 min pace starts when the last person crosses the start line). A lot of people do it at disney.

Also, I worry a little about doing the monthly mileage check-ins. Just because for those who are just starting running, or who are run-walkers, or that are training for the 5k mileage, seeing a lot of reports of high mileage and faster paces can be a little intimidating. That is what I recall from when I started a few years ago. Just wouldn't want anyone to not participate in the thread is all. I remember my first 5k training when running 2 miles felt crazy to me! If you had told me I would be doing a challenge or considering a full marathon now, I would have just laughed

To you angels who suggested Magical Enchanted Vacations and Kristina Sharpe... LOVE YOU! I am doing the challenge with AThrillingChase!

Indeed. But, remember, the real challenge comes after the races and when we hit Epcot and drink around the world!

It's not exactly easy, but it's completely doable to walk a 16 min mile. That was right around my starting pace when I first started all this running stuff.

About the miles, the most important thing with running is not to compare where someone is after years of training to where you are after months. It's all about looking at your own work, and your own gains, and being proud of where you are vs where you were.

Too true and well said!

I agree with what others above have said. A higher corral placement would help with cushion, and it might mean no photos, but all Disney requires is that 16 min mile. Maybe worth trying to see what pace you guys can walk at together at this point, and work from there??
