Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

@MaryJ so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Sending good thoughts your way. Deferrals normally open about a month before race weekend, I think.

Oh man that really sucks @MaryJ I hope your recovery comes quickly!

I spent New Year's weekend in Phoenix, AZ where it was sunny and 72 degrees, so coming home to cold, cold snow has been hard. On my run yesterday, I decided to split my 45 minutes up with a warm break. 15 minutes running to the gym, 15 minutes on the treadmill, then 15 minutes home. I'm pretty sure I have running ADD, because I love breaking things up too much lol

I'm not sure if anyone else posted this but on the rundisney website under the blog they posted up the new guidelines for costumes during the races.

Yes, just saw this. I agree, not totally unreasonable. Seems like most of the princess-y costumes should work out fine. I can't imagine anyone wanting to run with a mask or full length skirt anyway.

Sorry, I wasn't sure if I could post up the link. It looks like the Star Wars races will be affected the most by it. I understand why they are doing it but I will miss seeing some of the elaborate costumes people come up with.

I was going to wear a black eye mask for Mrs. Incredible but I guess that's out now. It probably would have annoyed me anyway, lol.

TOT 2013 a guy was Blade. Full length vinyl type black coat with swords on his back. Full pants and some sort of top too. It was SO hot that night. But he seemed fine.

W&D 2014 a guy was a dinosaur. Full plush costume covering head and all. He was the only warm and dry one on the course, and he seemed just fine.

My brother sees runners that have full costumes as saying "I decided to make all this harder on myself bc just running this distance isn't enough of a challenge". :)

@MaryJ, so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way for a full recovery and a return in 2017!

SAME!! I have seen people running in the full-length dresses and they always look miserable.

Thanks for the link. These are totally reasonable in my opinion.

In terms of training, I got totally sidetracked (no running at all) the last few weeks by a major health crisis for my dad. I am now well behind on my long runs. I'm going to have to make some bigger jumps than I'd like. I'm thinking of jumping in at 8 this weekend and adding a mile a week up until 12 miles two weeks before the half. I was up to 6 before all the trouble started, and I did IGC back in November. I am hoping I have enough retained fitness that I will be able to get through 8 ok if I take it slow. I will also run Tu, We, Th, during the week. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

"
  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest."
If only they'd really follow that last bit. No more tink or buzz wings that extend past shoulders!

I hope your dad is doing okay! :(

I have also gotten majorly sidetracked. I tried a different training plan and it completely backfired on me, resulting in a back injury a couple of weeks ago that I'm starting to feel okay from. Also, I've been sick...ugh! Not totally sure what I'm gonna do yet but I'm hoping to start things back up on Monday.

I just got a call from runDisney. I had emailed them when the original rumors about the costumes came out. Other than those who wear legit costumes, it sounds to me like what it has always been. The guy was super nice and apologetic about it taking some time to get back with me.

And just because I had him on the phone I tried to pump him for info on the release date for bib numbers. He couldn't confirm any date. Oh well!! Worth a try !

The costume change IS going to affect some people. I have seen people wear the full-length princess dresses (during 2013 Marathon Weekend...heat advisory...ooookay) and I have see people wear costumes that cover their entire body (the house from Up!, a churro, etc.). They should have given more advance notice, but whatever.

I'd expect bib numbers around 1 month before race weekend.

Thanks! He is currently still in critical, but stable condition. The doctors are changing a few things over the next few days which will hopefully lead to slow and steady improvements.

Sorry about your back injury! I hope it continues to improve and you can start back up as planned Monday. Injuries suck!

I was going to go with a new program, but decided to stick with my tried and true Hal Higdon. Hoping the slow build of the Wednesday run between Tuesday and Thursday easy runs will help with the back to back portion of the the races. The other program would have had more Sat/Sun back to backs, but I have not done them my last three challenges weekends, and I just don't feel ready to do them right now. Afraid it would lead to injury, so I am going with what has worked in the past.

Seriously...stick with what you know works. I am going back to Hal Higdon (well, a modified version for Princess). I totally regret straying away from that plan. :sad2:

Best wishes to your dad and your family!!

@MaryJ - Your positive attitude is inspiring! Thoughts & prayers for a full recovery. :)

@princessluna14 - We will be making our final payment next week - yay! So close to our trip!
Thanks. I have successfully deferred for next year. I am also registered for the Star Wars 10K in April. Still hoping I can make that one even if I only walk it.
