Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Wasn't there a discount for pre-ordering photos through Marathonfoto last year? I want to do it for Dopey, but haven't seen anything yet.

I remember seeing one before W&D this year, about a week or two before the event I think. That was one race weekend I was happy to not have pre-ordered for a discount since we didn't stop for any pictures in that rain! Hopefully we'll have better weather for Marathon Weekend!!

Fun to read & thx for all the great info and sharing tips, all!

I was hit by a car last week while running. Thankfully, my injuries are minor.

:scared1: OMGravy, how terrible. Hope you are doing much better now!

Speaking of, let's talk costumes!!!
Is anyone else dressing up? What are some of the best costume ideas you've seen at Disney races?

5k: student from Monsters U
10k: Minnie!
Half: Boo (from Monsters, Inc.)
Full: Dopey

Have a bit of work left to do on all these simple costumes but I'm looking fwd to running in a costume! :dance3:

I did a Disney Bounding-esqe Merida for PHM. I ran the 10K in a Belle costume.

Those costumes are awesome! :thumbsup2

I stayed at the Grand Floridian for Goofy in 2013 and took detailed notes on my phone the morning of the half, so that I would know what to do the next day for the marathon...

Thx a mint for sharing those details, for a first timer heading down to this race weekend, it really helped me out!

Marathon Weekend Dooneys are up for pre-order!!!

And thx even more for this! :cool1:

I just ordered the letter carrier and am almost more excited that I will have *earned* this than the 6 medals and shirts! :rotfl2:

I may have missed this discussion earlier in the thread - but any ideas when the courses for this year will be confirmed/posted? It looks like the courses posted still say "2014."

I was wondering the same thing as it says the courses are now available but it's the old maps. :confused3

This is just based off of what I remember from Goofy in 2013, but there's a LOT of overlap in the character stops for the first 8 miles or so of the half and marathon.

Wow, you're just full of good tidbits!!! :lovestruc

I need some advice please--on blisters. I've had a blister above the outside of the ball joint on my big toe for a while now.

Sorry to hear of your pains. I suffer from chronic ones under my bunions (ball joint) too and have tried ALL KINDS OF THINGS, every sock and taping configuration I have been able to google. Hopefully, you've figured out what works for you but if not, I've found Kinesio Tex Gold (name not the color) tape worked the best for me. I YouTubed how to tape feet so that might help too. YMMV. Good luck!

I blister very easily. I found a combination that works wonders for me... New skin

Thx for this tip - I'll try it after race weekend and see if this is a simpler solution for me! :thumbsup2

Based on info I found last year O started around 6:23am. Here's a list of corral starts from last years race
http://noguiltlife.com/2014/12/walt-disney-world-marathon-corrals-and-event-guide-2015.html

Gold!!! Was wondering when to fuel and NEVER seen any breakdown like this :worship:

Not necessarily running related but has anyone purchased the runDisney Dooney clutch (not sure of the exact name-maybe called the wristlet?) I was considering a splurge but was wondering what I can fit in it. IPhone with an Otterbox? Money? Cards?

I have a couple of these wristlets (DCL, Aulani) and both of them are the same size. They fit quite a bit surprisingly and I use mine as a wallet: iphone 5S with case (even fits with my battery pack case), stack of credit cards, cash, small change purse, chapstick, a micro pen. Hope this helps!

Great job on all those long runs, and best wishes to those healing up some inuries...we're almost there!

cheers,
:)

I plan on doing my last long simulation this weekend: 2/5/10/20

However, it's too icy/snowy for me to run outside and the university gym I use will be closed for much of the holidays.

I was planning on tapering with running alternating days over 2 weeks of:
3/3/6
3/3/7

Due to the closures, I am thinking of just doing:
(Sun, Dec 21: final 20 of simulation)
- Sat, Dec 27: 3 (5 days no running!)
- Mon, Dec 29: 6
- Fri, Jan 2: 3
- Sun, Jan 4: 7

So instead of 6 days of running during my taper, it will only be 4 days.

Do you think this will adversely affect my Dopey efforts by doing too little running the weeks leading up the the races?

I'm a turtle so not looking to for a time goal for the races, just to finish strong enough to enjoy the parks after the weekend.

Any insights or suggestions much appreciated! :goodvibes

cheers,
:)

Mile 15, McDonald's M&M McFlurry.....the marathoners ticket to the finish line. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

already Dopey McFlurry John

going for the unofficial 2015 Inaugural WDW Palindrome Week....5K, 10K, Donald, Mickey, FW Half, Dream 10K, Castaway Cay 5K

Definitely something for someone without a touchy stomach. :)

"Why am I eating so many naughty treats while running, you ask? I'm in training; seeing if they negatively affect me! It's all training, you know..."

I'll be there for the Half and the CC5K. DH and DS are doing the 5K and as far as I know I'm volunteering for the 5K and waitlisted for the Full. Apparently I just really wanted to wake horribly early for 3 days of my vacation...

10 to 15 minutes extra time for a McFlurry detour. My corral is H, but due to knee issues I most likely will start farther back so I am not in the way of others. Your expected pace should not pose a problem making both stops. I enjoy EE immensely, but not during the Marathon.

My preference is a M&M McFlurry so if it melts I still have the hard chocolate Ms to munch on.

Have a great time!!!:thumbsup2

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but how do you make the McFlurry stop reality? We saw McDonald's while running back from AK during ToT and couldn't figure how you get down there! Does the marathon course pass by McD's on a different road? Do you mud surf down the embankment? Tell me your secret!!! :worship:

Hahaha love this!!!! That's definitely why I enjoyed the hot chocolate stop in the 5k I did last weekend...just training purposes!

(Fortunately I have a stomach of steel, which unfortunately makes this excuse a little less valid for me...)

I think he has said he does go down the embankment!

(Fortunately I have a stomach of steel, which unfortunately makes this excuse a little less valid for me...)

Oh you are so lucky. In the past I have had to carry *everything* with me for the races. I've finally decided that Dasani water isn't going to kill me over a couple hours so I don't wear the hydration backpack, but I do carry my own Clif powder stuff and sports beans and shot bloks and I shudder when I see the Clif gel stuff being handed out b/c that doesn't agree with me even when I'm not joggling (autocorrect did nothing with that word, is it really a word?) my stomach for upwards of 3 hours LOL.

Costumes! What NOT to do. Huge tutus that will scratch others. Wings (fairy style or Buzz) that go out beyond your shoulders from side to side.

Basically have the most irritable runner you know go out with you and try to stay next to you, come up being you, pass you, and be passed by you, and see how much your wings or tutu or whatever bugs them.

Also, with a tutu and shorts combo, have someone run behind you on a training run to make sure the back is long enough. I doubt the women whose running-shorts-clad rears were showing actually knew their tutus weren't covering enough. Not that there's anything wrong with seeing running shorts; it's just that if I think my rear is covered by shorts and a skirt I want it to be covered by both of those things. :)

And test out running belts. I borrowed one from my friend for Wine&Dine and it pulled my running shorts so tight. I basically was effectively wearing volleyball uniform shorts the whole run. Embarrassing. I haven't even LOOKED at the photos....

What TO do? The Nemo costume I saw at DL Half was adorable. Orange and white tech shirt. Not sure what was on the lower half. On the arms were armbands with little orange fins that stuck out just enough. I assume one was bigger than the other. Possibly the cutest costume I personally have ever seen. (to me a supercute costume means something I would and could wear, and I'm a highly irritable runner so those things are few and far between LOL)

ToT route was on opposite side of Osceola Pkwy. Marathon route has us on right side so just have to take the on ramp down to traffic light, cross Buena Vista Dr. to McD's, back across street and back up the on ramp to rejoin the race then off to WWoS. I do cross over to the right side of the exit ramp at the bottom to use the crosswalk area when crossing Buena Vista Dr.

I consider the running wedgie pick to be a shameless act if necessary!

Okay- that seems like much safer terrain than I was imagining! :rotfl2:

Speaking of, let's talk costumes!!!

I don't think I am dressing in costume for the marathon-I figure that I will have enough to worry about that day without a costume. (I am thinking of wearing my "lucky" race shirt-it's a lime green 5k shirt from when I started running-I've worn it for every new distance and PR, and it's never let me down!!)

For the half marathon, my sister and I are thinking of being Lightning McQueen and Mater, but we haven't really seriously come up with ideas to make those happen yet.

Is anyone else dressing up? What are some of the best costume ideas you've seen at Disney races?

I will be dressing up as Mr. Incredible, which is very easy. An Incredible's logo was sewed to both a long and short sleeve Under Armour shirts. Weather will dictate what shirt I wear. I also have red running tights and knickers, which again weather will dictate. Over the tights I have a black speedo to complete the costume. If it's going to be wicked warm, I will just wear the short sleeve shirt with black running shorts. I wore the shirt for my last two Disney Marathon's and a few Boston's.

This year in Boston I changed it up and went as Spiderman, using an Under Armour Alter Ego Spiderman shirt and blue running knickers. It went over well, and I know that Marvel is now owned by Disney, but I hope to get a picture with Mrs. & Mr. Incredible to update my avatar here and on Twitter.

I'm excited I found this thread! We'll be running the Half Marathon next month!!

I'm dressing up as Anna and running/walking on my own. Hubby and brother-in-law are also running, but much faster than I am. This is our first Disney run and I'm super pumped!! :)

Thank you. :)

Grats! :thumbsup2

It's funny how it works. It's all about finding what motivates you. Everyone has different sources of motivation.

I still remember starting to walk back in January (I am... was?... a lifelong couch potato), imagining myself running through Disney. It's silly, but it made it fun. It's what got me out the door and through those first walks/jogs.

Then I actually started liking being outside. Every walk/jog/run was an achievement. Going out was in itself a motivator. It made me noticeably happier. And every time I was able to go a little bit further, a tiny bit faster. Now, 755 miles later, I'm on my third pair of running shoes (using Dec to break them in!) getting ready to run a marathon officially. :woohoo:

I think this is the first "New Year's Resolution" I've actually ever accomplished! :lmao:

Find what motivates you, use it to fuel your goals. That's what I've learned from this experience. Took me a dang long time to figure that one out. :goodvibes

Ha! I do the same thing! I imagine myself running those last few miles in Epcot and bringing it home to hundreds of cheering fans.

That's a wonderful achievement you've accomplished. I've got a modest running background so it's not quite the same thing for me...

couch potato to 5k? Forget that! Couch potato to marathon!

Great job.

This thread usually makes me happy, but tonight it's making me sad.

I got a call from my doctor this evening telling me that there is no way that I can do the half marathon next month. :( I have chronic anemia, and my iron and iron store levels (ferritin) have plummeted (6.3 and 2.x). No running. No raising my heart rate. No half marathon.

I'll be thinking of all of you next month, and working at getting back in shape to be able to do another half marathon in the future!

I'm truly sorry to hear of your health challenge and inability to participate in the January half.

Many of us know how tough it is.

With the passage of a little time, I hope you will find yourself reoriented to the race you'll have to miss (the disappointment faded), and developing interest in your new goals (getting healthy, staying healthy, and planning your next race, if possible, or other satisfying goal).

Best to you.

Welcome to the thread! I'll also be run-walking the half (my first half). I'll be going with a Maleficent theme for this race. See you out there & best of luck!

I'm so sorry! I can imagine how disappointing that must be. Wishing you all the best in getting back to running and getting to another RunDisney race.

It's not ideal, but it shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on you. Once you get your 20 in, your physical fitness is pretty much set for the race. I'd try to sneak in another few days if you can just to keep your legs fresh and moving.

Definitely something for someone without a touchy stomach. :) "Why am I eating so many naughty treats while running, you ask? I'm in training; seeing if they negatively affect me! It's all training, you know..."
If the McFlurry isn't what your stomach wants, you're welcome to have a beer at our mile 24 beer stop. :)
