Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Sorry if somebody mentioned this many pages back, but does anybody know what has happened to Coach Charles? I miss his commentary as I prepare for this race. Who is going to remind me when it is the right day to cut my toenails?!?!

He shows up occasionally on the Team #rundisney facebook page. He is listed under the Perfect Goofys in the race guide :)

A week before race day is a good time to do that. it'll give you something to do while suffering from taper madness. :)

Yeah, much better than what I did last time, which was to rearrange furniture. I didn't even realize why I was doing it until is was all over, when I just stood there shaking my head, realizing that yes, taper madness is definitely real, even for an old slowpoke like me.

My Tower of Terror time bumped me up to corral "L" for the 1/2 and I'm so elated about that, since K or L was my target. I was dancing around the office about it yesterday, and to say people gave me curious looks would be an understatement. Now I just need to find a good pair of running capris/pants. I'm local, and I went for a run yesterday AM, and it was COLD in shorts. I wanna be ready, since January weather is a fickle beast.

I got a pair of Athleta Capri yoga pants for yoga, but wore them out on a run the other day. They were great. Supportive, but I hardly knew I had them on.

The variable weather is my biggest worry. It's generally been in the 30's lately here in Massachusetts, but it was 18 degrees last week for my Sunday 20 miler. If it's 80 on race day in Florida, I hope I can handle it...

I live in Ohio and absolutely love the summer when it's hot and humid. I seem to really step up the activity.

The reason I say that is that after training in the fall/winter months, the humidity levels in FL for marathon weekend really have an impact on me.

Both years - according to Accuwether - the humidity at race time was in the 90% range (it does burn off quickly though) but even though I love heat/humidity here in the summer, it really affects me there in FL in January. I really feel it around the car entrance to MK (2-3 mile mark) before I feel my body can adjust.

So, just a word of caution for those training in the dry, cold north!

Define cold...if it's in the upper-30's here I'm running in shorts!

My wife has recently been getting her tights/capris online from Fabletics and she loves them. She says they are Lululemon quality at half the price.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been wondering how the quality is and if they were built to actually workout in or just look like you worked out:rotfl2:

Dopey Corral J for me! I'm okay with that. ;) Just hoping to make it through! I had a pretty rotten 19-miler on Saturday, dealing with GI issues the first half and knee pain through the second half. I finished it, but I had to take lots of walk breaks to calm the pain. I got home pretty disheartened. Knee still isn't feeling right. :(

Quick question for those who have done this race before... are Christmas decorations still up in MK as you run through? :santa:

I've seen conflicting reports on that and thought maybe some here would recall.

Thanks!! :goodvibes

They weren't last year as you can see from my picture.

I haven't done the race before, but I took a week long trip a few years ago during the first week of January and I believe they took down all the Christmas decorations (during one overnight period) on or around the Monday after New Years.

**POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT**

Sometime the Dreamlights will be on during the race when it's still dark out (they wouldn't be on during normal park hours). Otherwise, as others have said, the decorations are gone. :)

Crazy-eyes me during the 2013 marathon:

Oh, darn! :(

Thanks for your responses (and the pics!), though! :goodvibes

I know what you mean. We would normally be getting the weather speculation thread about now.....as well as the "Hay is in the barn" pep talk. Makes me a little sad:worried:.

I think this picture just shows how hot it was that year! Glad I missed it ;)

Is that a roundabout way of saying that I look like a red, sweaty mess in that picture?! ;) :rotfl2: Before I posted it I was like, "...should I? I look gross. Eh, whatever!"

Seriously though, it was sooooo humid. You could see the moisture collecting on the mile markers. :crazy2:

Now I just need to find a good pair of running capris/pants. I'm local, and I went for a run yesterday AM, and it was COLD in shorts. I wanna be ready, since January weather is a fickle beast.

I bought REI's Airflyte running tights and really like them. Wore them for the Seattle Half the other weekend, with temperatures in the low 20s. I never even got that "legs are cold and itching" feeling. The one thing I could have done to be even more comfy was to wear my Zensah calf sleeves with them, but I didn't, and I was still fine.

My friend tried the same tights on before I ordered them and she hated the fit, though. She made the mistake of looking at her legs (we're both short with strong, short, legs) and she calls them the tights that made her cry.

At the expo she found the Sweet Spot Skirts booth and it turns out they just started making running tights. She bought some, ran the next day in them, and loved them. They even have a side leg pocket or two, which my Airflytes do not.

Wow, SS doesn't make them easy to find, so I found them for you here.

And for the record I loved their Fast&Flirty running skirt that I bought to cover my rear. :)

Well we will just have to fire ourselves up, won't we? I know it's been a yearlong process for me, I've got one more high mileage week coming up next week and then it's taper and marathon time! I'm more excited than a 51 year old should be... and more than I have been in a long time.

Never having run more than 10k before this year, I ran two half-marathons in the buildup this year and already have two 20 mile training runs under my belt. That's already a victory as far as I'm concerned. I'm physically a very different man than I was in December 2013.

For those injured, hang in there. I suffered a scare in August when I thought I trashed my knee and my calf pushing it too hard in my qualifying run for WDW. A couple weeks off and I was OK... pulled the calf a bit again in November, all systems are go for now. But I know how horrible I felt when I thought I had blown Disney back in August. I feel your pain!

Let's get thru these last couple of weeks of training injury free and then it's go time!

I hate waiting.

Been dealing with some issues and a few setbacks..... but my last long run is scheduled for this weekend. I am doing a half marathon plus 2-3 before and after. I did 16 a few weeks ago and that went fine. Tried 18 and scrubbed it. Was only able to do 6 (had some knee pain that I am pretty sure I can blame on kickboxing the day before). Please send me prayers and pixie dust on Saturday. I feel good with 16 but would feel better with closer to 20. I am the one that got swept from Goofy 2009 at 23.5 of the full so excuse my french but the spits about the get real. I am having a good sign with my dreams though. Normally at this point I have a recurring dream that I can't get to the expo in time to get my packet and I end up missing the race altogether because I am not allowed to start. I have had zero dreams this year so I am feeling much better mentally. Found out I start in O this year. I was afraid I was gonna be in the last one but Thank God I got in O with my proof of time. At least I have a few cushion minutes. Here is a link to my race report from marathon 2013. Got swept at this one....really went in undertrained and injured but had a great time. With Goofy on the line....I don't know if I can be as upbeat.......but my pace is much better than 2013 so here's hoping! http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3048489
