Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

My wife and I did our first C2C in 2013. The Princess 1/2 and then the DL 1/2. February and then September. Spaced nice and far apart to allow for more training and recovery in between.

The C2C medal doesn't change much year to year. Just the ribbon which is some variety of blue. If you do the Tinkerbell and the Princess the C2C ribbon is pink.

Also the WDW medals are relatively similar year to year. The awesome medals are on 5 year anniversary years. Like we did the 5th anniversary Princess so it was extra sparkly and had "jewels" inlaid in the medal which is a princess crown of course.

We like to say that we race for the health benefits and the seeing the Disney Parks from a different perspective. Really we just do it for the Bling. :cool2:

Yup, all about the swag! ::yes:: Doing our first C2C; Princess and Tink. Our first half too! :scared1: So excited, trying to not wish away winter! (Which isn't even here yet!)

Hello to everyone:wave2:

My DH and I are running our first marathon this January (commemorating my 50th birthday this fall). 3 months ago I did not like to run from the couch to the refrigerator to get a glass of wine- so this is a big deal. :yay:

We are jumping in this thread to stay psyched and learn from all of you disney running experts. Ran 7 miles last weekend without any problem, however three days later started having cramps in my calves that continue to be really painful three days later. I will try eating a banana and cutting back on the post-run wine :rolleyes1, but any other ideas to help alleviate my cramps before tomorrow's 3 mile would be appreciated.
Thanks!

So telling people that I am signed up for goofy just because I want that 10th anniversary spinner medal must be why they think I'm insane...that explains a lot! Lol

Have you considered wearing compression sleeves or socks? My calves feel SO much better when in the socks.

Drink lots of water and maybe try a foam roller? :)

Happy early birthday!

Epsom salt baths!

Thanks for all of the leg cramp ideas! I am going to try them all- especially interested in the compression socks because I don't understand why they work.

I agree with some of the earlier posts- I am running this for the bling!:lovestruc:

Water, water, and more water. I hope I'm not vulgar/disgusting here but your urine should be close to clear. This goes for both run days and non-run days.

For your longer runs, consider a water belt with a couple of bottles. I'm close to 50 myself and this has made a world of difference (at least to me).

Those are my ideas. I hope they help.

I don't understand it either, but it's like my calves are being hugged and loved the whole time which makes them happy.

I know that sounds crazy, but oh well, LOL.

I also bring a pair of long socks to put on after the run, because that feels nice, too. Plus, even in Orlando I get freezing cold a short bit after a long run, so bundling up is good for me.

I know the times I have done the marathon in Disney (twice) I used compression socks.
I wouldn't be able to tell you if I would have been okay without them but I am sure they helped. I never got any cramps.

So I found out about Gatorade Chews back in April when I had the flu and they work wonders when I am running, deff using them in January

Does anyone recommend a brand of compression socks? Or do you prefer calf sleeves to socks?

This is the 10th anniversary for the goofy challenge? I had no idea but I like the idea of special bling as much as the next person. I signed up just to say I've done it and for an excuse to go on a Disney trip. Special medal too?!?!? BONUS! :cool1:

I have pro compression socks and sleeves, cep socks and zensah sleeves. I do like pro compression over cep for socks, they're softer but just as supportive. I sometimes run with the socks, and also wear them after long runs, but I only use sleeves post-run (mostly so I can wear flip flops!)

Get Endurox R4 it's from Pacific Health Labs. It has the "proper" ratio of Carbs/Protein for endurance excercises. Expensive, yes. You drink your dose no more than 30 mins after workouts. It works so well for me. While my legs may feel tired the cramps aren't there. And boy do my calves LOVE to cramp. I also use the CEP calve compressors.

I second the Endurox R4 after a run. I love that stuff, and it really does help with muscle recovery. I'm never as sore the day after if I drink it right after my run. I love the fruit punch flavor. :)

I have CEP sleeves and socks. I like the socks. My ankles aren't teensy, and they like to swell at times, and it becomes very uncomfortable at the ankle level (and the self-esteem level if I catch sight of them) if my ankles get puffy between the end of the sleeve and the start of my socks.

Hint: wear the correct sock on the correct foot! I realized while peeling them off at the Retreat this year that I wore my CEP socks on the wrong feet for the whole WDW Half. No wonder my arches felt so funky the whole time!

They even have R and L on them. I had managed to not see that at all in my training runs... And I had gotten dressed in the dark. :3dglasses

Don't flame me, just passing on information an employee at a running store told me last year when i was having problems with plantar fasciitis. He said that compression sleeves are fine for racing (he wears them too), but should not be worn after the race for long periods of time. The socks are fine, but something about the sleeves ends up "pooling" fluid in your feet because of the cuff around the ankle. I haven't done any research but it made sense to me, so just watch out for swelling in your feet if you wear compression sleeves for long periods of time post-race.
