OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

I just watched "Spirit of the Marathon" via Netflix, feeling inspired :-)
Question: this is my first marathon, I was planning to run with my hydration belt because I like to drink as I go rather than gulp and designated spots, is that unusual?

Not unusual and also not a bad idea. Disney has plenty of water stops, but there's always something to be said for having yours available when you want it.

I had a water/fuel belt this year for the full...because I was terrified during the full I would feel the need to have something to drink in between the water stations. It didn't happen. There were plenty of water stations.

This coming year, I don't think I am going to take water with me. I will just stock up on Gu.

I wish they would release the 2nd installment of Spirit of the Marathon. They travel to the Rome Marathon for that. It came to theaters for one evening and has since been unable to view. Coming to DVD someday soon I think.

I'm not a fan of carrying lots of liquid around my waste for long periods of time. I do it when I have to for long runs while training, but look forward to just drinking off the course which others have said is plentiful. The added weight slows my pace and wears on the joints. In my experiences. I do bring some gu's or nutrition with me though.

I always wear my hydration belt. I'm used to wearing it, I keep my phone in it, and I like knowing I have my own water if I need it.

I have carried a flash flow to Orlando for a couple of races and never pulled it out of the suitcase. I do carry a bottle of gatorade to the start and use it during the first 7-10 miles to supplement the longer gaps in the first half of the race. I started this in 99 when I was unsure of my ability to last the 2 mile stretch with no liquid.

I did and have survived every race run. I think the longest I have carried the supplemental bottle was 2007 when temps went up very unexpectedly and water stops were stressed as the 9-10 minute group passed as early as mile 12. That was by far the bad year for runD and their ability to keep fluids on course. I do not believe that they faced anything like the shortages of 07 since - even in 13 when the temps were as hot.

If you train and are used to having a a flask or bottle on your hips, then bring it out to the race. You will have to let security look at the bag as you pass into the staging area on race morning, but that is a small price for having piece of mind.

Thanks to the two idiots at Boston, Disney has implemented new security procedures for the races. Here is what to expect as you come to the race this January.

1- Anything that is frozen or in gel form (like the flexible ice packs – NOT fuel gels) cannot be checked in your bag. – Not sure that affects many, but it will be clearly written in the instructions.
2- All bags will be searched. I have no direct knowledge of where and how, but I would expet to see tables set up at the threshold for the Staging/Family Reunion area. All bags, back packs, fanny packs are searched – just like the park entrances. Plan to add 5-10 minutes for this little adder. Note they do have a bypass line for those with no bag, it is monitored as well.
3- Expect a possible second search as you check you bags in the pass through tents.
4- Currently, Camelbacks and related items are still allowed in the race.

I have seen the K9 folks out at both the ToT and W&D so I would also expect that we will see these folks out as well.

Hope this helps answer some questions as you prepare for race weekend

Walking into the 5k this morning I was asked to unzip my iFitness belt to show them the room key and cash I had inside. It can't hold more than an iPhone really - very small. Less capacity than my pockets by far. So Coach is right - be prepared.

Thanks all for the input on the hydration belt. I'll have the belt on regardless to carry my phone and some nutrition. I'll likely throw a small bottle on there as well. I know there is plenty of water on the course, I just don't want to drink/gulp it all at once. There is also the "http://www.hydrapouch.com" that is intriguing. I may see how that could work out.

I can't say the extra security bothers me at all. I do think you are too nice in your characterization of the bombers as idiots.

Just ran my 1/2 today with a new belt (I fitness) and really liked it better than the spi belt I had been using. It didn't shift at all the whole race

I have even using the Amphipod Runlight Hydration belt, love it. No bounce, comfortable, Carrys all I need.

Received the email this week and it mentioned 4 food stops during the full. Very excited as I've found I need a banana or piece of bread midway during my long runs. For those that have run before, what do they typically have at the tables during these stops?

Great question! I can't eat bananas, I have digestive issues with them, so good to see what else they have. Though I'll likely carry my own. Just to stay consistent.

I think I remember on the course there being two banana stops,a chocolate stop and some Gu stops. At the end they gave us the little box with an assortment of items, cheese and crackers, small protein bar,etc...I can't remember if there were bananas at the end,I think so but just not 100% sure. They also gave you a bottle of water and a bottle of blue powerade.

Generally the food stops for the new course are as follows….

Mile 11.8 Cliff Shots and Blocks
Mile 15.4 Bananas
Mile 19.6 Cliff Products/Bananas (bananas may not be here - this stop base been Shots or shots and bananas in past races)
Mile 23 Candy - lately chocolate

In addition, sponges at mile 17

I would REALLY suggest that you avoid these food tables unless you have practiced with those specific food items on your long runs. I made a rookie mistake in my last marathon and had food/drink that I don't normally use, andit ended very badly.

Those icy water sponges were great with the temps in
the 80's this year.I'm going to assume if it's in the 40's-50's for this year there won't be any sponges. If it's like in 2010 the sponges might freeze.Instead of chocolate entering DHS I think I rather have starbursts or skittles.
