OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Hi! New to the party...

I have done Goofy for the last two years and am scaling back a bit to the marathon alone next year, saving energy for the tenth goofy on 2015. I love WDW marathon weekend although am hoping, maybe in vain, that they don't try to pack any more people onto the race course, especially for the half...which was insufferable in parts for me this year!

I agree! The half was packed and the lines for the characters for the full was over a 30 min wait!!

I'll be in for the half. I've done the 2012 Princess half, Dallas half, and in April I'm doing the half in Eugene. I've been to marathon weekend multiple times as a family supporter, but this'll be the first time I'm participating.

We've never run a Marathon before and after watching everyone this year we've decided to go for it. I ran 5 miles this week and am working up to running 12 a week. Do you think that will prepare me?

I would check out some of the training programs jeff galloway, hal higdon, etc etc and just see what their schedule looks like.. In my mind, having never run a marathon before, if you mean you are going to run a total of 12 miles per week, no I dont think I'd go into a marathon on that.. But, different folks can do it different ways. But most of the plans I've seen get you up to a single long run of 20 miles a few weeks before and some get you to the 26 miles, and even others actually OVER a marathon distance, on a single run, not over a whole week. I just know, myself, no way I would try to run or walk 26 miles in under 7 hours with only 12 miles in a week..

Hi everyone! Joining in the party. I'm seriously considering finally going Goofy next year. I've done the the half a couple of times and I did the full in 2011. I didn't make it for marathon weekend this year and I missed it. I figure it is about time I try the Goofy. Though I'm trying to not think too hard about all those long runs in the fall:crazy2:

DW and I did our first 1/2 this past year. I'll be doing my first full Jan 2014! DW is planning Donald again shooting for a better time. I may go all out and go Goofy. Running the half with her and the Mickey on my own. I need to ensure I commit to and stick to a wait loss and training plan. I need to lose 10-15lbs and need to actually train ;-)

Ok, need some help from those who cross train while training for long runs. I know I should have been doing it all along but I'm stubborn (& sometimes lazy). So I like to do cardio & weights but I'm not sure about 2 things.

My running is usually Tues & Thurs about 3-4 miles bday then long rundown Saturday. So here are the questions...

1-I'm thinking it'll be ok to do my cardio + weights as the workouts are only 40-60 minutes on the short run days of Tues & Thurs. Is my thinking accurate?

2- My bigger question is before the long run days, is it ok to do the workouts before the long runs? These workouts can be intense. I know it's not best to do them the day after long runs to give them a rest, but what about the day before?

Thanks.

No, running 12 miles a week will not prepare you for a marathon. What it will do is prepare you to start a marathon training program later this spring or summer. Once you have a plan to follow, you'll be running anywhere from 20-40 miles a week or more, depending on the plan you choose.

Yeah. DH (DEA on the boards) and I ran the half this year - my first! I have three more half marathons planned for this year (Nike Women's in DC, Divas in VA wine country, and Wine & Dine...hmmm, theme?), and we've all but decided we're going Goofy in 2014. I have a feeling that the half is "my distance," but I have a niggling desire to cross the full of my list. I'm pretty sure I'll follow the Galloway for Goofy - and that I'll be a one-and-done full marathoner! But I know - never say never. This running thing has a way of hooking you!

Hey you! Great to see you on here! :)

Trying to decide if I'm going Goofy in 2014 or if I will choose a slightly saner route of sticking to half marathons or maybe "just" the full again in 2014 and go Goofy for 2015.

My shins were angry with the really long distances training for the full this year, and I know I need to focus on building strength in my non-running muscles. To be continued...:yo-yo: :rotfl2:

Since OKW is my home resort AND the three years I have stayed there for the marathon were the three hottest years for the marathon (05, 07 and 13) I am soliciting contributions from marathoners to help fund a stay in a different location.

OK, actually, I am obviously in for 2014 and promise to stay in the BWV or BCV again. 2014 is an off year for the folks I am training so I will not have 10 people to house.

I totally could have wrote this post. Finished full...and 98% will do Goofy (if not 100% for the full).

Game plan for this year is strength training. With that and dropping more weigh, hope to see my times get a lot better. Hey dropped 55 lbs in 2012...another weight loss like that will have me lean and trim for some great times.

Here's hoping you're at BWV or BCV in 2015, too, since that's my next Goofy. :)

Hello ,

Felt pretty good after completing this WdW Half this year.
Taking a bit of a break from long runs and sticking with a few 5K's here and there. Unbelievable warm weather for FL! Ugh. It is January right?

If anyone will be in the greater Jacksonville area in early March I recommend doing the Gate River Run 15K on Saturday March 9th. Many hills and crossing the "GREEN Monster" for the last mile. :thumbsup2
A scenic 15K through downtown JAX and part of the riverfront area.

Doing 5K Heart walk next weekend.

Hope everyone is having great workouts.

Colleen

I am going to do the full, and then do goofy in 2015 if I can handle it. Even though I really want a Donald Duck medal

Did my first full at Disney in January. I was certainly one to say "never again." Now I'm thinking, "Hmmm...when can I reasonably do that again?" I have decided that runners really are nuts. I think I need the Goofy, but realistically with my husband's schedule and my kids age, that's not happening until I have at least 1 teen/tween.

I'm on the fence. I may be back in January. I hope to actually meet other W.I.S.H.ers if I do this time rather than saying hi as I was passed or happened to pass another teammate (if you saw a miserable Tigger that was me).

My current insanity is looking at taking a week at Thanksgiving and doing 3 halfs in 7 days. (St. Augustine, Subaru-Jax (great flat race), Space Coast) I will be doing Cooper River Bridge just over a week after thyroid surgery. (Registered for the race long before getting icky thyroid biopsy results.)

Oh, I love W.I.S.H! So fun to follow everyone's journey.

I'm not a trainer, but I certainly think you are setting yourself up for failure and more importantly injury if you try to do an intense workout prior to a long run. It is better to do your cross training the day after your long run. Most plans have running on Tues & Thurs and some on Wednesday as well. Rest on Friday, long run on Saturday, and cardio on Sunday, with rest again on Monday. Your legs need to be fresh before your long run, hence the rest day on Friday.
