Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

He's already, unprompted pointing the finger at Ovechkin... he might have a point.
Nah, that was a "team effort" and Ovy didn't put three goals on the scoreboard for Finland. The Finns aren't push-overs and they had an extra day of rest while Russia played two days in a row.

Great quotes from Russian coach

Q: What future, if any, do you see for your own work and for your coaching staff? Because, you know, your predecessor was eaten alive after the Olympics—

A: Well then, eat me alive right now—

Q: No, I mean—

A: Eat me, and I won't be here anymore.

Q: But we have the world championship coming up!

A: Well then, there will be a different coach because I won't exist any more, since you will have eaten me.

Q: But you're staying, aren't you?

A: Yes, I will remain living.

Latvians are now giving the Canadians a run for their money!
Funny Tweet from the NBC Olympics site: "If you happen to be visiting Canada right now, keep your mouth shut, don't touch anyone, and you should be fine." :)

I know this was tongue in cheek, but officiating in most of the hockey games I've watched this Olympics (at least on the mens side) has been bad.

I did not know that. I was just poking a bit of fun at Putin's comments and the reported uproar in Russia in the aftermath of the U.S./Russia game and the disallowed goal. I thought that was beneath a head of state, host of the games no less, to comment on. I'd feel the same if it was reversed and Pres. Obama was being whiny about it. The public at large? Fine. Heads of state? Bad form. Host of the games? Bad form.

I'm just a casual observer with the hockey, among other events, but I had honestly expected gold medal finals w/ Russia v. Canada.

I'm curious how everyone else feels about athletes switching countries in order to compete. I don't know, something just doesn't sit right with me.

Take the South Korean speedskater. He is now a Russian citizen and skates for the Russian team (and brought them a gold medal). There have been a number of mentions of athletes who previously competed for one country and now compete for another.

It happens. Even in this country.

Vic Wild, an American-born snowboarder, became a Russian and won a gold medal in men's parallel giant slalom for his new country, after he did not have support here.

what do u guys think of the boss of the nhl that he says no more ice hockey on the olympics

Between the men's hockey team and the little figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya, it has not been a good day for Russia. :sad2:

And the situation in the Ukraine is not helping things either.

Is she the one who was so spectacular in the team comp? I said then I thought she could possibly come in and take the gold, shocking the world. I've been looking forward to seeing her.

LOVE IT!! It's been quite the nail biter...the CBC was commenting that the Latvian goalie has made 55 saves against $149 million worth of NHL stars! Truly amazing performance. If he weren't playing against us I would definitely be cheering for him.

Canada vs US in the semi!!

I know it does, but it just doesn't sit right with me. I don't like the whole idea of giving up your nationality for a personal goal. Kind of like when rich people leave the country with their money and become citizens of other countries, just to avoid taxes.
