Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

I know, but one of the reasons I run on the treadmill (the main one is I am too lazy to go outside) is to save the strain on my knees. Trust me I felt it at the ToT by not running outside.

I might do a couple of off day short runs outside just to get the feel of it.

Good luck with all the road pounding and I think you might want to avoid passing on the grass. I've managed to hit some pot holes and they sure ain't good for the knees.

Interesting, I have had fairly good luck just off the edge of the roadway. The exception would be the bend from Epcot to World where the inner radius is a little choppy. But I also follow a runner similarly paced and keep an eye on their hip. If their hip dips then I try to avoid the spot they were just in.

In other words...

Take care of your knees. You won't make it through DATW otherwise. :)

ANYWAY!!

just looked at the rundisney website and it says that the 5k starts at 6:15. i had to giggle to myself that my first thought was, "ooo! i get to sleep in that day!"

Yup. That's pretty depressing especially given how excited I was to hear that...

Well poo. Had planned 2, 4, 7, 18 this weekend but had to cut my 18'miler short to 12 today. The foot that was in a boot post-NYC was hurting so badly I couldn't push anymore ugh. I'm so depressed about this and worried about the dopey. Not sure how to proceed. Everything felt great until the for pain started. Nice and slow and easy and even tonight I don't feel like I did a LR. Wah!! I just cannot be injured!!!

Hope everyone's LRs weñt better than mine this weekend! Just a month away!!

I ran 5, 8, 13.1 the last three days and am really really happy with how it went. I dropped 8 minutes off my half marathon from Oct. and felt good. I am excited that I may actually be able to get through the full without too much pain. Good luck to all that still have a long run this weekend.

Can't say mine did...but I'm hanging in there! I thought of you during my run today.
My dear friend...I think you can do this Dopey. And I went back and forth on whether to message you or post on here, but maybe someone else could also benefit from my thoughts/opinions.

1. You have a good base. You did great at NYCM, so keep that in mind.
2. You know, you weren't really in that boot very long. If it were me, and my foot was bugging me, I would strongly consider wearing the boot for "daily activities" between now and WDW (ok, maybe not for Christmas Mass, but you know what I mean), just as a protective measure.
3. Sounding like a broken record here, but if you have access to a pool where you can do water running, it really REALLY can help you maintain your fitness without putting stress on your foot. Or, if you have a gym with an elliptical trainer or can do spin classes.
4. Assuming you are not causing further injury during the race weekend, consider adjusting goals and throwing in some walking here and there.

These ideas are based on when I did Goofy (old Dopey) in 2010 and developed a stress reaction (don't know if it was a full fracture) in my foot diagnosed about 3-4 weeks out from race day. I did a ton of water running, and wore the boot except for the races.

Also...if you consider a metatarsal pad for a little extra cushion (if that is where you hurt), I have a tip: put it under your insole, not on top. Then you can tape it in place, and it is there for the cushion, but the motion of your foot in the shoe will not make the tape pull up or make the pad curl up under your foot.

Love you!!

:worship::worship::worship: love you betsy!

i am going to google that metatarsal pad. also will look into maybe a month-long membership at the Y or something.

would you wear the boot and then take it off for the runs and then put the boot back on? seems a little ridiculous....but if it's going to get me across the finished line(s) then i'm ok with that. i'm fine with a majority of walking now. it's all about finishing.

injuries are ridiculously depressing

Finally back up to 2 miles/day. It's getting better, but the Dopey challenge is barely a month away. Hoping I am recovered enough to finish the whole thing - racing any portion of it is completely out of the question now.

24 miler today - felt AWESOME! I still have some nagging injuries, but nothing that is limiting me while actually running.

A weird thing happened to me today while running. It was 25 degrees outside, with a light wind. By the end of my run my vision in my right eye had become very cloudy. It stayed that way through the rest of the run and for a few hours afterward, then started to clear up. Very strange, and concerning. A google search tells me that it is probably nothing to be worried about, but still...

This weekend I did 4-9-16, which all felt pretty good. I was planning on doing 19 today, but I'm on vacation and when my trail ended at 8, I turned around, planning on running in the other direction for another mile once I got back to where I was staying. Except the trail didn't go any further that way, either, that I could tell. Plus, I was super cold. I feel bad complaining about the cold when some of you have snow and much colder weather, but 18 degrees is way too cold for me, especially on a shady, tree-lined path. I'm still nervous about the races, but am feeling confident that I'll definitely be able to finish. Next weekend will be a cutback week, and then the following weekend will be my 2-5-10-20 combo!

Ran 10 yesterday at a 7:40 pace and 20 today at 8:15 pace. Hoping to do a quad of 8's at marathon weekend. That's run an 8:00 minute pace in all four races. Thursday, Friday, & Saturday I'm looking forward to. Sunday will be a challenge.

What my coach had me do was to wear the boot, substitute bike or water running (lots of water running) for most of the runs, and do one or two shorter quality runs on my feet (without the boot, of course). Yes, I did water running for 2-3 hours a couple of times.

Then I did a 3:2 run:walk for all three races and did ok (2:41 for the half and 6:05 for the full---I'd love those times now!). Wore the boot in between and then for the next month.

and margaritas!

:)

A few years back my right eye used to go black..meaning no vision...I saw a doc who saw NOTHING wrong with it...but it would do this...then it would go cloudy like yours...I saw another doc who saw NOTHING.
This was a few years ago and it hasn't done that in years. Strange.
Perhaps it was stress? Thinking about the races? I really don't know...but whatever it was with me, it stopped and never came back..knock on wood (my desk)

BTW great job on the 24 mile run! You are there!

What is everyone eating after Dopey? I'm heading to beaches n cream for onion rings, french fries, ice cream... Probably not Sunday since I might want just want to hurl, but definitely by Monday.

I agree with Betsy on all the above. I would not stress out the foot on any additional long runs until possibly Christmas. And then, only a slow 6-8 miler or two to shake the legs out. I would also try to protect the foot from misguided steps.

I would add cycling and rowing to the list of workouts but more than likely try to avoid the elliptical. Note that water running with a foot injury is best done in deep water, not a swimming lane. The contact with the pool bottom can still be stressful.
