Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

It's funny that we're 18 weeks out from Disney. I'm about 2 weeks from my first taper (Hartford), to be followed by NYCM right after that. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to allocate the 10 weeks between New York and Disney. Probably one week of scaled back rest, 7 weeks of hard training and then a 2 week taper.

I have yet to get to the back to back runs in my plan yet, you are all my heroes! My first back to back is next week, and it is a 4/13 weekend for me. Luckily, I have a Half Marathon for the 13 day, so I will have motivation!

I am in your boat. Nothing.

I do have a lot of half marathons coming up...end of Sept is the first, middle Oct (then I will do something else the next day on my own), a half the following sunday after that and another half at the last Sunday in Oct...so I am pretty much booked up with half's for Oct however after that nothing..but it will get me started.

Meanwhile I guess I have allergies to ragweed? Who knows. I am tired and worn out all week long. I feel like I have not slept in days.

I have the back to back run thing down pat, but I'm not adding a lot of mileage yet. I'm in the middle of a training cycle that is heavy on speedwork, and adding miles plus lots of speedwork = injured me. It ends in a couple of weeks, so I'll probably just start with a six or 7 miler, and then a 12 miler the next day.

The speedwork is paying off - I did an easy mile yesterday, and then 2 miles at a 10 mph pace. It hurt, but I don't think I have had that kind of speed since high school.

I cheated... I was supposed to have back to back runs in my plan and I picked it for those runs but... umm... I might've bumped the mid-distance weekend run to the week so I could have one day to sleep in. I'm hoping to live through Marine Corps and then pick up Higdon's dopey. I feel pretty good--I did a 40+ mile week and I'm still alive so that bodes well.

I'm staying at the boardwalk in January and I was curious, does anyone know if I hang up a sign before going to the bus on the boardwalk will it stay there or is it likely someone'll toss it? I'm debating also doing this for Marine corps on what I now call "my corner"-kind of a me cheering for myself.

10 mph...as in 6 min/mi?? Great speedwork!!!!

I have had trouble with adding speedwork and upping the mileage as well. Been alternating with the mid-week longer run and some tempo runs as well.

Thanks. Yeah, that was 2 miles at a 10 mph pace - the second mile was a little faster, but the whole thing was treadmill, so I have to take it with a little grain of salt. But I think I could match it on a track, if someone was either pacing me, or at least yelling at me on every lap. :rotfl: Still, it's faster than I thought that I could go, which tells me that a mental barrier has been part of the problem the last few years. (Thinking I might be able to break 20 minutes for a 5k now. :thumbsup2)

I'm hoping to keep speedwork (at least once every other week) as I up the miles, but I think they will go to tempo runs (like 2 or 3, 2-mile repeats, at my 10k pace) since those are not as hard on me as doing 10x800s or the like.

I've done a couple 4 day consecutive running weekends, the last being a 3/5/6/12. Haven't done a 20 miler yet, but I have done a couple 15s and a 17.

It's simply too hot to run that far right now.

Oh.. And I'm doing a mini-sprint Tri at the end of this month, and I'm registered for 2 half-marathons in October. fun fun fun

Today was perfect for running in the Northwest! Low 60s and cloudy, just how I like it. Today was the first time in months that I really enjoyed a run. Hopefully this is a good sign considering my Dopey training started this week! :D

I've had to do a ridiculous amount of training on dreadmills lately - the local roads are sometimes hazardous for running, and, since my wife has been out of the country, I have been taking the safe, boring, dreadmill route. Now that she is back, I can get on the roads again - and the weather has dropped from nasty 90s to beautiful 50s and 60s.

I did a quick review and did not see this posted. If this is the course, I like it.

Thanks for posting that - I had seen it elsewhere but went looking for it last week and couldn't find it. The first half of the route looks rather dreadful - hopefully they have some pretty good entertainment/characters. The second half should be a blast - that's a lot of time in the park!
