Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

The Polynesian hotel....nice place and I always wanted to stay there!
I am staying at the Dolphin. I always do.

Where ever anyone stays, I do agree that's it is worth the extra $$ to just stay in Disney. For the convenience of being able to take a bus to the start line and hotel. Just to know that all you have to do, considering how early you have to get up is to roll out of bed, dress and take the elevator to the main floor and walk out the front doors. Rather than add the driving to the list.

I don't think its worth it to stay in a lesser priced hotel outside Disney...you have everything you need within their 'world'. And if you book early enough and plan it well, you can get a hotel at the same rate as a hotel outside! Last year I booked my brother in one of the hotels in Disney (Under the sea?) for $100.00 a nite and that included all taxes!! I had booked it BEFORE I booked the races.

Long time lurker here! My wife and I signed up for Dopey the first day it was open, but now the hard part: Training!!
We are following the Galloway plan (Strictly thanks to my lovely bride ;) )

I think the only hiccup will be the fact that we are doing the Wine and Dine Half in November.

Is anyone from the Raleigh NC area from the DISboards doing Dopey? It would be nice to train with other people on occasion. My brother is doing it, but he lives a few housrs away.

Training seems a little "funner" with a group. My wife has done several runs for LLS and the Team atmosphere was a great help on those longer runs.

Anyway--just saying hi after several years of hiding in the shadows.

Welcome and good training!

I just had another set back.

Long story short - 6 months ago, I had foot surgery on my right foot. I now have 3 screws in it. This was all due to me being an idiot 5 years ago and walking into a rocking chair, fracturing/breaking my metatarsals, and they never healed properly because I waited 3 months to go to the doctor. Actually ran Goofy on a fractured metatarsal - didn't know it was fractured.

Thursday marks 6 months since surgery, and yesterday I was given full 100% clearance to train as hard as I want for my running races, sprint tri (in September) and my 70.3 Ironman in April. High heels again, too (seriously, so tired of flats).

However, yesterday's appointment was actually scheduled at the last minute because on Saturday morning, I walked into the bathroom door and fractured my far left metatarsal on my left foot - fracture is in an X formation, and is in the worst spot to have a fracture or a break. I'm in a new boot for the left foot now. No running for at least three weeks. Could be more, will know after the next set of x-rays.

So incredibly MAD at myself. Who hurts themselves like that on a BATHROOM DOOR??

I'm so sorry that you've had so many setbacks and delays! Those bathroom doors (and frame rails on beds and pretty much all solid objects) can be really dangerous. I hurt myself all the time, though I've been lucky enough not to have that serious a break on a foot. I've started wearing a solid set of flipflops around the house, so when I slam my foot into something (which sadly happens often), it hits the shoe and not my foot. Sending hugs and pixie dust for recovery and for the frustration! :grouphug:

I looked into a human sized hamster ball, but they do not exist ;)

There will probably be more hotel time than usual, so I'm glad this trip I'm paying the extra and staying at the Polynesian (and I hear the monorail is convenient?). I made breakfast reservations at Kona for after the 10k and Ohana after the full, probably heading to MK and Epcot (definitely doing pre-marathon dinner at Via Napoli again) and then Sunday/Monday will be spent looking for dopey to get a picture!

All I wanted last year was a picture with Mickey and my medal but unfortunately by the time we got to the MK he was gone for the day and we left Monday morning, so this year I'm staying til Tuesday to have a full park day with my medal assuming, of course, I can still walk.

Monorail is very convenient especially if you can get in one of the buildings near the TTC. I was in Tahiti last year and it was no more than a five minute walk to there. You obviously don't have to change monorails if you just go directly to the TTC. Really enjoyed staying at the Poly. Maybe we will see you there. :)

:lmao: It's probably a good thing for me that they don't. No doubt, I would fall over my feet, break an arm and poke out an eye. :rotfl:

I'd probably do fine in one, right up to the point of encountering stairs - at which point, all bets are off, other than "How many bones do you think he will break?"

Speedwork tonight, and the temps in the low 60s. Should be fun.

There are a group of us here in Raleigh that are doing Dopey. We get together in small groups and run a couple times of week. We run on the backpack trails in Umstead, on the Falls River Greenway and occasionally on the ATT. What pace do you run for your long runs?

That is very cool! When Colleen G and I get to ether, we run about a 12-14 minute mile I think, once all is said and done. I love having her to run the long runs with! They are coming up!:eek::eek:

Training with friends is great. Having a couple other people to run with is a great way to stay motivated particularly when things creep up and steal the time I would use to try and run.

They are! You are officially in charge of dragging my butt out of bed!!! I can't slack on this one like I am for Dumbo!

Awesome! We do the same places. Mostly the ATT, but we like to switch it up. Sometimes we run from North Cary Park around Crabtree Lake and into Umstead that way for those really looooong ones.

We run between 11:30 and 12:30 depending on how we feel and how the weather is etc. We're not too fast :)

How about y`all? What pace do you run?
We should try and meet up sometime--maybe on a really long run in the fall...

Pacewise our group is all over the place. I'm typically running at a 9 or 10 minutes pace although for long runs on the weekend I'm slower. I work at SAS so I spend a lot of time running in Umstead. Maybe we'll see you out on the trails.

Just found this board! Loving it! I haven't been through the 58 pages of posts (yet) so please excuse me if this has already been discussed . . .

Are there any plans of a meet and greet marathon weekend? Any idea how many DISers will be running the Dopey? Why are people running? Is anyone raising money for charity? (I am raising $$ for Tourette's Syndrome Association - my son has TS). It would be nice to gather in one place. Just a thought.

I am using the Galloway method and loving it. Long runs (10 miles) have been in the 9:25/minute range. I'm really looking forward to see how the run-walk method plays out on those 15 and 20 mile runs.

Hope everyone is having fun and I hope to meet some of you in January.

I would love to meet up! I will be attending a meet up with my Running Club on Sunday night, but I am open most other nights, or for group photos before the races!

The Dopey Facebook group was thinking of meeting up after the 5k since it would be the time when people would be at the same place at near the same time.
