Official 2013 Tower of Terror 10 Miler

If 11-12 minute mile pace is SLOW then I am in REAL TROUBLE, I am hoping for under 14 minutes!

I ran the first half of the Disney marathon in 12 minute miles and then combined walking and running from mile 14 on putting me in the 13 and change minute per mile, definitely not fast but after looking at the results online I think that finish put me somewhere right around the middle of the pack including those that didn't finish,I believe like 25,000 started and my place was 12,000 something, very average but I can live with it.For the ToT I'll definitely be more in the 11 minute per mile pace with it being a shorter race.

The heat really killed me this morning on my run. I ran 9 miles - 2 with my wife at a relaxing 13+ min/mile pace. (She is on the couch to 5k program). I then went on my scheduled 7 mile run. By this time it was about 80 degrees outside, with 90+ percent humidity. This was my first run this season on a hot and humid day, and it really hurt. I averaged 11:42 miles, and had to walk about one mile of the distance. :scared:

Consider that I have been making progress with my running, and this past Sunday ran 13.1 mile long run at an easy 10:36/mile pace. Just when you start to build a little confidence, something like today's run happens. :sad2:

Maybe I should reconsider running this one since it will almost certainly be in conditions similar to my run this morning.

Yes it will be a shorter race, but take into account the heat!! I normally run a 10:30/11:00 pace, but for the Tower last year I was a straight 12:00 pace due to the heat (I only stopped for one pic and that had no line).

Make no mistake - chances are high that it WILL be hot and humid; that's just the way it is down here in early Oct. But you won't have sun beating down, you will have adrenaline pumping, and you have all summer to acclimate to running in warmer weather. Will slowing your pace to deal with the heat ruin the race for you? I think that's the main consideration; I know for some folks that's a big, fat YES.

I was totally acclimated to scorching summer runs by early Sept.; TOT wound up feeling a lot more comfortable to me. But I live in a place even more humid than WDW and ran all summer in sunlight. :faint: My friend from NY had to slow her pace significantly. She was okay, wasn't sick at all, but for sure - I think anyone not used to running in swamp-like conditions ought to plan on slowing down for TOT.

Yeah, I'm from PA, and even though I live on the great lakes (hello humidity!) I was not ready for the intense heat, and had to slow my pace. My mom made me promise to listen to my body, she was very concerned once race day arrived and it was SO FLIPPING HOT!!

I ended up doing fine with that pace, and I only puked after riding TSM ::yes::

Yeah, we considered TSM for about a second... and said "Nope." TOT was fine, but spinning? Uh-uh. :sad2: :rotfl:

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of just how much that ride spins... until I was on it... and we kept going around and around and around... I still got the highest score though :lmao:

This year, no rides, I'm just going to enjoy the party :thumbsup2

That's what I was thinking!

My only goals are to finish the race without being swept, without an injury, and without passing out. So really that's one goal: finish the race. :)

:) I'm going to be in so much trouble with this, and I'm already planning out how much water I should bring, etc etc.

I did live in Miami for awhile in college, and ran most every evening, so I've been a runner in those conditions, but it's been a loooooong time.

i will probably be in last coral as i dont have a time to submit and cant find any local UK events to enter in the meantime, i would have liked to try and do somthing in the UK around August time to prepare myself for what a true event is like.

Well you and I can be together. :)

The other week I was looking for road races in England and found some; for some reason I was surprised at how *many* I found. But maybe I found races far away from you; being from here, I consider the distances between places in England to be very small, but I imagine if you live there you don't. :goodvibes I'm going to a farmer's market right now, but maybe I'll try to re-do that search for you later?

Same here as I'm a complete noobie to running as I haven't ran anything more than 5 miles since I was 21, lol. I just wanna finish the race, I don't care how fast my time is!

Mine 2!!

I have two goals

1. Finish!
2. Have Fun!

Can you tell I just finished my first season of coaching U5 soccer? :hyper:

Goals are good to have! Mine...

1. Have fun!
2. Beat my time from last year
3. Finish
4. Attend the after party.

My goals are a lot like everyone else:
1. Finish the Race
2. Have Fun

1. Have fun!
2. Beat my time from last year :rotfl2:well that should not be hard considering...
3. Finish really this comes from a lady who did awesome at the PHM this year?
4. Attend the after party.

you can bet we are doing the party even if you are picking me up off the ground

2013 TOT Goals:

Primary: Go in uninjured!
Secondary: Beat last year's time.
Dream: Finish sub-2:00:00.

Secondary is very attainable. Primary and Dream will require a balancing act of working hard to build speed without ending up injured... again. ;)

On the subject of racing in the heat... Last night was my first truly uncomfortable run of summer: temp 88 with a Heat Index of 94, blazing FL sun, AND I was trying to push a 10:30 pace. Recipe for disaster, folks. I overheated big time and the wheels came off 2.5 miles into a total of 3. Final avg pace was 12:21.

BUT, here's the takeaway for folks worried about the heat - best thing I've found to slow myself down on a hot run? More walk breaks. Just throw in an extended walk interval every so often. It slows the heart, eases muscles and helps me far more than trying to run slower on the run intervals.

That was me yesterday, but I waited too long to take a walk break. Walk breaks got me through the rest of my run, but I probably should have just called and asked someone to pick me up.

The good news - I drank enough water yesterday to totally overcome my self-induced meltdown. I was able to run 7 miles this morning (only 73 degrees out) at a 10:22 pace without taking a single walk break. From now on, I am getting my behind up earlier. :lmao:

I was soooo tempted to do just that!

That's AWESOME news! :thumbsup2 And a great reminder... I'm aiming to get out there early tomorrow.
