Official 2013 Tower of Terror 10 Miler

Thanks! Would have never figured that out without those detailed instructions.

No problem! I would have provided the links, but I was responding from my phone and it's just a little inconvenient trying to pull everything up that way. In case anyone else is looking to know their bib# or corral placement, though, I'm providing the links below here:

HERE is where you go to find/print your waiver.

HERE is where you go to view corral assignments.

The runDisney event page for TOT provides these links if you look under Runner Info, Waivers -- the corral link is just above the waivers on the page. As mentioned before, your bib# appears on your waiver, and you can view your corral placement by seeing where your bib# falls within the corral assignments (established by anticipated finish times).

TOT 10 miler for me, corral G. I'll be wearing black shorts, pink the dye compression sleeves, pink and white striped tank, glow in the dark bracelets and some neon green in my hair. Hair will be in pony tail. I'll be following Princess V for 2 reasons: I can't see so good at night and the Florida gals have to represent!! LOL. Stop by and say hi!

Cindy
:rotfl: I'll definitely keep an eye out for you! We Floridians have GOT this :thumbsup2

Injury AND weather update:

Guess what I did last night? I RAN! Again! And it felt almost normal! :dancer:

Also, it was absolutely beautiful out... for a Floridian. ;) I was out between 6:45-7:30pm. Not sure what the actual temp was - probably mid-80s - but it was hot and humid enough to be slick with sweat (which is good - no chafing!), but a nice breeze and lower humidity (72%) kept me from overheating. Bonus: stunning sunset. I would LOVE to see the same for Saturday!

For those in the "middle of the pack" who have run Disney races before, how much time do you factor in for character stops? I gauge my stops by how fast I am running; if I'm not running well then I typically skip the photo stops. However, this time I am running with my daughter and she wants to stop for every character. Just trying to figure out how fast I need to run if I am in Corral G but I need to stop for every photo she wants to take.:confused3

We've run back of the pack in previous races, but for the Disneyland Half we had plenty of time for photos due to a lack of lines at the characters we wanted to stop for photos. This was nothing like Marathon Weekend in January, though, because it's ultimately about how many other people stop at the same time as you -- it's going to vary from race to race and character to character.

That being said, I've gathered there was some disappointment with the number of characters along this course last year and honestly wouldn't expect them to bump it up much (if at all) because it's "only" 10 miles. With a buffer from G - J and likely < 10 character ops along the course you'll probably be fine provided there aren't any crazy excessive long lines. And you could always just seek to compensate for any longer photo stops with a short burst(s) of increased pace afterward.

And don't forget that there should be additional character photo ops for you and your daughter at the post-race party in Hollywood Studios.

Honestly for the ToT there are not as many photo ops as a daylight race. I would estimate that you are safe assuming 10 minutes for all - maybe 15 minutes on the outside.

I'm running both! (I think). Lol. Only brought one pair of shoes...

Put wadded-up newspapers in your shoes (as many as will fit) if they are wet from the 5k. They will absorb the water. This was a lifesaver for my DS's soccer cleats which he needed daily for practices/games.

Hope we don't need to worry about that and good luck!:beach:

That's about the best thing one can do with the Sentinel. I would plan on this even if everything is 'dry'. The 5k is a cross country race and the grass along the 3 miles will make the shoes wetter than normal.

Unless something changes the weekend looks like a normal early October weekend for the WDW area. Race temps should be in the low 70’s for the 5k and the mid 70’s for the 10 miler. In both cases, since the wind is coming from the east, the dew points will also be in the lower 70’s – making for a humid event.

I would still have my trash bag and plans in place just in case of a change in the unsettled area to the south. Our luggage all have a large trash sack stuck in a pocket somewhere as a precautionary measure.

Current thoughts are that is will not form a storm until later in the week – if it does at all. The latest discussion seems to put the area over the Yucatan Friday making development unlikely until it sees clear water. Most models put movement of the storm to the west of the peninsula.

Everyone, have a great time packing and have a safe trip down.

thanks for all of your advice! i've packed trash bags and duct tape as a precaution. i also packed an alternate race outfit too.

Does anyone have specific raceday advice in regards to eating and staying hydrated? For the more experienced people do you eat anything specific? I was reading and they advise to drink 2 hours before. I wish there was a formula of how much to drink to be hydrated but hopefully never have to use the restroom because I dont want to waste any time stopping. I am a heavy sweater and noticed during my longer walks thats water doesnt seem to keep me from feeling dehydrated, tried G2 and that made a significant difference.

Thank you for your advice!
Jasmin

Anyone know of someone who registered and is not able to make it for the 10 miler? Please PM me if you do...;)

Repeat after me...

NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY!!!!!!! :thumbsup2

Your best bet is always to stick with what's worked in training - eat the same (or similar) foods, at the same times, wear tested clothing, etc. Personally, I like a pretty good-sized dinner, but others do better having had a big lunch and small dinner. Hopefully you've tested things out in training - stick to what worked!

The one exception is hydration - unless you live and train in FL, you'll need to hydrate more than you're used to. But that starts days in advance, ideally. I'm pre-hydrating NOW. On race day last year, I drank water and Nuun in about a 2:1 ratio all day. Stopping 2 hours before doesn't work for me - I sip continuously before and during a run. But that's what I've found to work for me in training; YMMV.

At this point in time, you kind of need to rely on what brung ya&..

I think the advice you were reading was more in line with eat 2 hours pre-race, not drink. In general terms, treat this like you did in training. What may be confusing for many morning runners is how to set the day up. If that is an issue, simply roll the clock around so that your running morning breakfast routine occurs in the same time frame as your training runs. That would mean a light/carby meal like bagel, cereal, oatmeal, or what you trained with in the early evening/late afternoon time frame. Rolling back a little more, a hearty late breakfast/brunch would sub in for a race eve dinner. And since you are awake, an in between snack/meal would be appropriate.

If you question was a how do I eat for a night race when I am a morning runner I hope that helps.

With regard to hydration, you want to be on top of hydration starting tomorrow or Friday at the latest. For those who fly in, buy a bottle of water for the plane. Try to stay at a point where urine is pale in color and clear. You may be a little over topped off if there is no color at all. I would put myself in a situation where I could continually sip water, if possible. If coming from a cooler, drier climate, I would still rely on thirst while in the race. You should know about how much you need to drink as you run, keep to that level of hydration and add a little more if thirst kicks in.

With regards to a formula, we are all an experiment of one and what works for you may not for me and visa versa. The best way to understand what you should be drinking is to weigh yourself, dress, run/walk for an hour at training or race pace, disrobe, dry and reweigh. The weight difference will give you an idea of your hydration rate. If you weigh more, you hydrated too much and if you weigh less, you need to consider adding a little to what you did on that run. For ease of calculation, assume water weighs 8 pounds to the gallon. If you weighed 2 pound less on a one hour event, then you needed to have consumed a quart more liquid (2 pounds/ 8 pounds/ gallon) (Note this is an extreme example if one was hydrating during the hour.) Its a little late to do this now but keep it in mind for the next long race. It will give you a very personal hydration rate.

Please don't panic at this point... Trust where you are and where you come from. You will do very well Saturday night if you relax and trust your training...

Hope this helps.

Not sure what Saturday will bring. With my sore leg I realize that I will likely not be able to run the race Saturday night. I am going to go...walk (and run a bit if I feel up to it) and stay as far ahead of the sweepers as I can...until I can't anymore. :sad2:

Its frustrating....but I also don't want to spoil the rest of the trip. I need to be able to walk for 2 more days in the parks after the race. I may try and do a 10 miler at the end of Oct just to get a time for the Glass Slipper Challenge that is better than mine from the Peachtree this past summer if it is better.

But the good news is we leave Friday morning...only one more work day and we are headed that way!!

You will be surprised what race night adrenaline will do for you

Your best bet is always to stick with what's worked in training ...

Exactly. Hopefully the training has included experiments to see what works in terms of food before, hydration before and during, and "fuel" during the runs. I know that's been just as important in my training as the running has!

Its frustrating....but I also don't want to spoil the rest of the trip. I need to be able to walk for 2 more days in the parks after the race.

Just want to put it out there because this is actually an option in MY plans...if you hurt yourself, just rent some wheels for the rest of the trip. I've budgeted for an offsite-rental scooter if I am too hurt afterwards.

But you're going in hurting, so be careful and don't hurt yourself more. Just...if you do...there are rental companies that can help you continue with the rest of the trip.

The above almost certainly didn't come out right. And I'm not sure how to make it sound like what I'm saying. So disregard if it rubs you wrong. I'm not saying it in a way that should do that, but I don't think I'm saying it right.
