Official 2011 Princess Half Thread Part II!!!

YOGAMAMA: I take regular walk breaks and they actually help my overall time! Some people take a walk break every few minutes but I didn't like all the stopping / starting, so I walk for one minute at the end of each mile. It really helps me mentally since I know I only have to go for one more mile before I get to break again. AND - even though I ran my farthest distance yet last time, I also ran just under my regular pace! Convinced it was because I didn't force myself to run the whole thing straight. :cool1:

I run this way as well...normally count my steps at the end of each mile up to 100 and then start again...sometimes let myself go to 125 or 150 if I'm particularly tired though. Most of the time 100 steps gets me close to 1 minute. But you're right, it does wonders to your mental state to know you always have less than a mile to go until your next breather. Great tip!!!

I'm really looking forward to running with everyone!
I love reading the discussion boards for the words of encouragement and lots of advice.

I did the Seattle Rock & Roll 1/2 marathon last June and got hooked.
Now I'm training for -
Disney World Princess 1/2 marathon
San Diego Rock & Roll 1/2 marathon - beginning of June
Seattle Rock & Roll 1/2 marathon - end of June
Disneyland 1/2 marathon - Labor Day weekend

I ran 8 1/2 miles on Saturday, so I'm starting to work up my mileage.
Thanks to those who posted about the Runkeeper app.
I tried that for the first time & loved it!

My niece and I are meeting up for the Princess run and we are planning our costumes.
I bought us pink tutus.
And I bought a pink running skirt from Skirt Sports.
I need to take them out for a spin to see if they will be OK, but it's still very chilly here. Maybe I'll just try the skirt on the treadmill, so I don't get too many funny looks!:rotfl:
Now I need to figure out my top. Any suggestions???

Although I doubt this is a very original idea, I'm planning to do an iron on rhinestone transfer in colors to match my tutu...you can find tons in different themes on various websites, ebay, etsy, ect, and they are very inexpensive. I ended up purchasing several because I couldn't decide what I liked the best so hopefully one will really stand out when I see them in person. However, the jury is still out on how these transfers are going to work on moisture-wicking material. I plan to try one out first on an old running shirt that is WAY to big for me now!!! (I love that! :woohoo: )

You are not alone!!! I had two sizable children and experienced this problem when I began running this year. What happened to you happened to me..except I was wearing light gray pants!! A couple of things...I hydrated the day before my run, then would wait about an hour and a half or so after my last drink and run to the bathroom before I would head out. I also tried to limit what I drank when I ran because it takes about 20 minutes for anything you drink to go through your system. Also, just for a precaution, I bought Teena pads. They aren't as bulky as Depends, but does the same job. I haven't had a leakage problem since. As a side note, I started Kegel exercises but wasn't that faithful to keeping up with it. I am training for my first half and worry that with the longer runs I might have some issues so I will need to be better about the Kegel exercises, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. My husband was a runner and he reminded me that many marathon runners will actually just pee their pants when they are running so they don't have to sacrifice time. I guess that made me feel a little better!;)

Thanks for the advice! It helps to know others have had the same issue. I did some research online about it too. One suggestion was to wear a tampon for extra support in that area. I also think it helps if I don't have a full stomach. Both times I had major issues it was in the afternoon. Thankfully my stomach should be pretty empty on race day! Good luck to you too.

Just ordered my Asics Gel 2150's. Can't wait to start breaking them in. Did 5 miles yesterday . . . still having a little trouble with the knee, so more walking than running. Felt good after and today so this week it's 6 miles. Holy moly . . . this whole thing is going to be here before we know it!!:scared1:

My knee gets a little twingey, too but when I remember to take glucosamine pills it helps A LOT! They are in the vitamin section and, when I have been taking them regularly, my knee doesn't bother me at all.

Hey everyone - for those of you who have done this race before - did you take disney buses from the host hotels or drive yourself? Any benefits to one over the other? What is that morning like? Trying to decide what to do!

Thanks so much!
Kori

ugh...stupid snow and ice we are getting down here. I need to get in 2 runs this week and have no access to a treadmill. I guess tomorrow I will go for a walk to see if I can get a slow jog in...but am so paranoid about falling on the ice! I do have Wii, so will at least do that for some cardio, but I can't believe I am saying this...with the ice and no yaktrax thingies, that is not possible.

We got 5 inches last night of snow at my house which is a ton for Atlanta BTW and today its been sleeting so now there is a nice sheet of ice over the snow. Its going to stay colder than freezing through the weekend and I think we have more snow on the way. Yeah, its pretty, but i need to get a run in with no easy excuses!

Oh well, going to make cookies to drown my sorrows. ;) We have plenty of food and still have power! Thanks for letting me vent....if you have any suggestions or tips for getting in my 2 maintenance runs, feel free to share.

Oh and tinkeramy, good to see you here!
Unbelieveable snow you've gotten. I'm in MA and at least we're used to it. I called a couple local gyms in case we got a lot of snow this year, so i could maybe join one short term to get my runs in, but ended up they are so expensive, but most of them will give you a one week trial period, so i did that at one gym and got 2 runs in there this past week. Also the local Y sent me a couple free day passes, so i have those to use too, and it looks like I'll be needing them. Don't know if you are near any gyms that you may be able to do a free trial at. I hope it warms up quick for you and the snow and ice are gone soon.

Hey everyone. It's been quite a while since I've checked in. My youngest had some health issues, but I'm still in this for the long haul. I can't believe how close the race is getting. I'm still doing Team in Training, and worrying like crazy about meeting my fundraising goal. But we just got the email with our hotel arrangements. I'm staying at...wait for it...

The Yacht Club!!!! Oh my gosh, I almost fainted when I read that! I'm normally a Pop girl due to finances. A trip to WDW, without kids or hubby, in a Deluxe, and all I have to do is run 13.1 miles? This is heaven!!

Same here!!! In NC and it's just been plain nasty out there. I got back on the running wagon last week after a month break due to the holidays and me being solo parent this past month because my husband is deployed. So last week was my first week back. AND now the snow! ARRRGH! I hope much of it melts today because I'd like to get back on track. Last week we (my friend and I) were doing about a 12:30/11:30 run/walk mi so I'm not too too worried about keeping up. BUT my joints are feeling every mile!

Just got back from an 8 miler this morning. Now I'm icing before I'm off to my marathon of classes today. Right now I'm ahead when it comes to the plan my physical therapist wrote up for me and super excited for the race!

I'm going to be getting some new Nike's (not sure the model right now) in the next week or so. Luckily I'm also on my school's triathlon team and the local running stores sponsor us so we get nice little discounts on everything!

Keep up the great training everyone!

So sorry to hear that weather isn't cooperating with so many of us! I got out yesterday for 5 and today was my yoga day, but I really would have liked to have gotten out because we're supposed to get dumped on with a winter storm overnight. Hoping that they overestimated like they did last time for my area...

Different note - is anyone staying at Fort Wilderness? If so, want to carpool to the start?

OMG mother nature just does NOT want me to train for this race! we're expecting to get hit hard again tonight/tomorrow. i can't take it anymore! you should see all the salt and sand trucks around just getting ready for the storm. hoping that all that preparation will just mean that we don't get anything! but it's not looking good.

i got 4 miles in yesterday and was hoping to do 4 on wednesday and then do a 10 miler on friday before i fly to NC for my girlfriend's baby shower! looks like that isn't going to happen. hopefully by friday i will be able to get in some decent mileage.

i was just reading a thread about compression tights and i'm thinking about getting some. hey, even if they just hold my flub in a little better they'd be worth the money!

I totally appreciate you runners in the colder regions of the US after this week. Yes, another day of no school tomorrow and its not supposed to get above freezing. There is a youtube video floating around of a dude ice skating on the street of downtown ATL, yeah, its icy here. The city is at a standstill and I need a run outside for a mental break...oh well..this weekend, its only a few days away!

Wii fit tomorrow I guess is better than nothing...and love the thought on the compression.

Hang in there, do what you can.

Hey guys!
5 of us are over here in South Korea training for this race in 6 weeks!!! (Well, we leave in 6 weeks anyway). Here's my question. We have had a really nice mild fall and early winter and have managed to keep doing all of our runs outside. Then we all went somewhere warm for the Holidays and kept running. Now we're back and winter has finally hit - it's FREEZING out there with epic winds. Since I got back from Christmas we have managed to do 2 out of 6 runs outside and we've done the rest on a treadmill. We even did an 11 miler on the treadmill!! (4 "Amazing race episodes" on my iPad was the only thing that got me through it..) Is it OK to train for a race on a treadmill or are we cheating? If we can still get one or 2 runs in outdoors on the warmest days of the week, will we be setting ourselves back doing the other 2 indoors?
I'm asking because I feel like running on the treadmill left me less sore and achy and I am definitely not feeling as "mindful" about my runnning just picking a speed and making like a hamster for 2 hours. What do you guys think?
Thanks!!
-Melissa

Melissa-
I trained on the TM last year..my whole training program...11 miles was my longest on the TM. I did fine in the race 2:09 with stops for photos so it is possible. I don't like it, but cold, slick roads is worse for me. I do prefer to be outside, but our weather has turned ugly and my LR was on the TM this week. I try to look ahead to find one day I can do the LR outside and do my speed/tempo runs on the TM.
Hope you can get out and good luck with your training.

I just registered, I am a male though, but I'm running for my girlfriend. I am going to be dressed in a pink princess dress with a tiara to add a little flare and fun. I want to have fun, I'm not there to compete, it is a female event, they can compete, I just want to finish and have fun.

danhockey04 You should feel right at home in your pink dress etc. Most men I've seen at this event cross-dress :thumbsup2
