Official 2011 Princess Half Thread Part II!!!

GREAT JOB everyone!! :cheer2::cheer2:

I'm feeling like the race will be here before we know it now that Disney Marathon weekend is wrapping up. Anyone run there this weekend? Give us some reports! Looked like pretty good weather.

Speaking of weather, I'll be thinking of all of you Southeasterners this week; I hear you are in for some major icing (and not the yummy kind!). I hope you all stay safe and your power stays on!

I got through 9 on Friday but it wasn't a very good feeling run. Still...finished. Getting very excited.

As far as camera carrying, I've carried my Canon Elph with me both times I did the Princess and had it in the pocket of my running skirt. My skirt was Atalanta Athleticwear which is no longer in business. The pockets were GREAT...I held 1 Sports Beans & my phone on one side and 1 Sports Beans and my camera on the other. Unfortunately, I've worn out the skirt from use (actually very cool since that means I've used it so much in 2 years!!), This year, I think I'm going with a Gym Girl Ultra skirt from Skirtsports which has pockets on the undershorts but they won't work for my camera & phone, just my beans and iPod. Looking into a SpiBelt. So, that's my 2 cents.

Have a great Sunday! Off to do 5 on the dreadmill since we got a few inches of snow this morning...

You are not alone!!! I had two sizable children and experienced this problem when I began running this year. What happened to you happened to me..except I was wearing light gray pants!! A couple of things...I hydrated the day before my run, then would wait about an hour and a half or so after my last drink and run to the bathroom before I would head out. I also tried to limit what I drank when I ran because it takes about 20 minutes for anything you drink to go through your system. Also, just for a precaution, I bought Teena pads. They aren't as bulky as Depends, but does the same job. I haven't had a leakage problem since. As a side note, I started Kegel exercises but wasn't that faithful to keeping up with it. I am training for my first half and worry that with the longer runs I might have some issues so I will need to be better about the Kegel exercises, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. My husband was a runner and he reminded me that many marathon runners will actually just pee their pants when they are running so they don't have to sacrifice time. I guess that made me feel a little better!;)

Ladies, I have a problem. This is rather embarrassing, but it's not like you'll know it's me at the race so you can't point and laugh. :rolleyes1 DD is almost 2 and I've struggled with incontinence since she was born. (She camped out in the birth canal and I pushed for 4 hours.) So now I can't laugh or cough too hard without issues. I know this is a common issue for moms, and I know it might not ever get better.

But all of a sudden, I am having serious problems when I run. Up till now I would just get that feeling that I had to go, even if I really didn't. Well my past 2 runs outside have been disasters. I had to cut my run short today and wound up walking 90 percent of it. Every time I started to run, "whoosh", out it came! :scared1: I was soaked down to my knees. I even stopped and used the port-a-jon on the greenway and STILL had leakage when I ran afterwards. I was in tears I was so discouraged. Thankfully my black running pants are good at hiding wetness, so hopefully no one knew but me. But it makes you really cold when the wind blows and you're soaking wet. I guess some Depends are in my future?

Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix it? I am going to start doing more kegels and check out some Depends for my next run. :sad2:

hi everyone! hope you all had a great weekend! we are winding down our weekend: dh is folding laundry (i bribed him with pancakes this morning), i'm on the computer and the toddler is running around chasing the dog. we went to the bronx zoo today and froze for a couple hours.

i ran 9 miles yesterday. it was slow and hard. and my hips are killing me still today. my pace gets slower and slower as the miles add on. i finished just under 1:45 and a pace of 11:19 min/mile.

that pace is pretty slow but it is certainly fast enough to be able to stop if i have to to take pictures and/or make a bathroom break.

i don't think i'm going to do any sort of costume. probably wear the same thing i wear each run - black capri-length running leggings, a t-shirt, and a long sleeve on top. nothing too fancy. i have a waistpack that holds a water bottle. will probably put my room card, AP, and a credit card. i plan on bringing my iphone and using it for music. i have an arm holder thingy that i've been using.

I just want to say I am really amazed at how all you working women and moms can manage to get your training in. It is a tribute to you and your support systems that you have the dedication to do this. I waited until I was old and retired before I made the time for myself to take on the training. I commend all women who are training for this event. Most of all, because you are training for yourself. Bravo, Ladies!!:cheer2:

I honestly do know how very lucky I am to have several things going for me as a running working mom:
1. a corporate culture that values fitness and a job that allows me to get out for an hour and a *smidge* more of a "lunch hour" just about every day
2. running buddies at work
3. a nice network of a variety of routes near the office: riverfront, urban, park-like, and trails
3. a FREE locker room with showers
4. a wonderful husband who also runs, so we tag team on the weekends to get out...or sometimes we ship off DS to a friend's house and get out together! :lovestruc

I really marvel at the women who don't have all of the wonderful advantages I do, yet still get out there and make it happen! :cheer2: Rock on ladies!

Ok runners, are you planning to bring your own music to the run or do you run sans music and just take in the atmosphere during the race?

I run with music to train, but don't think I'll be bringing it with me to Disney, or should I? I think I'll need to hear the cheering to keep me going! :lmao:

I train with my music and I plan to bring my ipod with me. I can always turn it off, or just have it in one ear. Just in case I hit a rough spot, I want to have my music get me through.:)

I'll be bringing my ipod even though I may not even have it on. I'm hoping that the entertainment of the race will be enough for me. And, for the first time ever, I may be racing with someone to talk to. But, I'd rather have it and not need it than get halfway through and wish I had it.

I swear, I'm going to be like a pack horse. It wasn't so bad with my last half marathon, so I know I can carry what I need, but I'm taking my camera this time too, so there will be added stuff. We'll see!

I am torn with this one. I always train and run races with my my ipod but I want to really savour this special race and moments but I have also seen the course and there is some really boring areas so I feel I may need that music to keep me focused. I'm also stuck with this decision!

I train with music, but have NEVER even taken my ipod to a Disney race. I train alone for the most part so it is my company, but at Disney I have 11,000+ others and on course entertainment.

Those listening to music can (not alway, please don't flame me) be annoying as they can't hear other running nearby. It can make it hard to pass or be passed.

I bring mine...Disney or not. I feel there are MANY long stretches with no crowd support or entertainment.

I am bringing mine just in case.

Meredith, you are not alone, I have a fuel belt for my water, but I have added on 3 pockets to carry, phone, beans, camera, credit card. I can't add anything more or it will be to heavy and I will fall over. HA HA HA HA

Glad to see you back on the Boards and back to the race week-end. Participating in the family race is a great way to start. next year we will see among all the Princesses!

Meg

I sure hope so Meg! I still am so disappointed I won't be running down mainstreet, but I will definitely settle for the World Showcase :thumbsup2 I'm getting excited! I'll be thinking of you guys on Sunday, and hoping I can join you all next year! :goodvibes

The sparkle skirt looks cute. For the 5K my daughter and I are wearing blk running tights, a pink tutu and a black tech shirt that says "Running Princess" in rhinestones. Now for the half I was just thinking of wearing my black runningskirt and not sure what top, thinking just my pink nike running tank, but not sure yet :confused3 Decisions, decisions!

this sounds alot like the outfit I'm planning on for the half...question about your top...did you make it yourself using iron-on rhinestone transfer designs? I have ordered several online (because I couldn't decide which one I liked the best!) but now I'm a little concerned with how they will adhere to athletic wear material. If you made yours yourself, did you have any troube? I'll most likely use a Nike Dri-Fit running shirt. Thanks for any info you might have!

Ditto this - I really don't like running without music, so those stretches seem like h-e-double hockey sticks to me! I do keep it really low so I can just hear the beat, especially when I run with friends to talk to (who do the same thing) or when I want to be really aware of my surroundings. I run with my Android, so in addition to the music I also use a running app that gives me mileage and speed statistics.

Also, this is going to sound really rude, but sometimes I want to drown other runners/talkers out. I ran a half this fall where two women were right behind me for about 10 minutes - they were talking about one's divorce. I'm certainly glad they were having their vent time and that she had an outlet for discussion and support...but it really wasn't something I was motivated by, nor did I feel that it was really any of my business to be hearing. So I cranked my music louder than normal until I could make a move on some folks in front of me (it was partially on a rail-trail, so no wide streets to maneuver to get away.)

First time post on this thread - SaySay got me sucked in and I'm SO glad - lots of great info! Started running for first time ever in July / Aug and hit 10 miles for the first time on Saturday! Finally feel ready and pumped!

YOGAMAMA: I take regular walk breaks and they actually help my overall time! Some people take a walk break every few minutes but I didn't like all the stopping / starting, so I walk for one minute at the end of each mile. It really helps me mentally since I know I only have to go for one more mile before I get to break again. AND - even though I ran my farthest distance yet last time, I also ran just under my regular pace! Convinced it was because I didn't force myself to run the whole thing straight. :cool1:

You all are making be think about what I should wear at the race. I have been really thinking about getting some CW-X tights, capri's, or shorts. I would love the compression, and I think it would help my hips. Just need to decide what would be best for me.

Keep up the great work ladies, and happy running!

So, what's the deal with these tights anyway?? I LOVE running in tights/capris and have seen these particular ones in various local running stores and they are soooo bleepin' expensive! Do they really work wonders for anything in particular? I'm unexpectedly going to have some extra $$ the next couple of months, and I always like to splurge when something like that happens, so wondering if I should try a pair?

Bought a SUPER soft plush pink robe this weekend on clearance for about $16. The original intent was to use it the morning of the race to keep warm in the corral and then donate it on the side of the road as the race starts...but MAN is it comfy! I need to put it away and forget about it!

My first post here although I have been lurking for some time. I have CW-X compression 3/4 and love them. I will not run in anything else. They are super $ but I only need 1-2 pair. I have 2 bum knees from 20 yr old injuires and they have support that wraps around them and keeps them in place. (they have a habit of dislocating - annoying and very painful). You should know that the sizing is more on how tall you are rather than how much you weigh as the reinforced areas need to be in the right spots. I am 5'3" 155lb and have the mediums but will be buying the smalls soon. Right now I have some bunched fabric in the back of my knees and thighs.

Hmm, other gear that I love. I have a Garmin 405cx that is fabulous. It uploads to the computer but I have never used the Garmin site. I upload it to dailymile instead. I do most of my training on the dreadmill but still love it for the heartrate and virtual training partner for training and use the satelites for races.

I am very far behind all of you for my training. I am doing 6 miles today and my first 10k on Sun. I took the last 10 days off on MD and PT advice because of hip pain. I can't wait to get that ah ha feeling of of course I can do this. I'm still in the (oh crap) what was I thinking stage. Very scared but crazy excited as well. I am brand new to running. I had Gastric bypass surgery 5 months ago and have lost 95lbs. Have been running less than 4 months. I do run/walk segments with the walks being longer than the runs.

Will be going to WDW with my parents and my DD who is 12 and doing the kids run. Also coming are a friend who was suppose to run with me but has wimped out and her 2 daughters. So I'm kind of doing this alone and love that I have found a community to share it with.

Music- I train with music once a week or so, but when I run with others I never listen to music. I have never listened to music during a race. I don't like to have something else to carry with me, plus the adrenaline and excitement of the race does wonders.

Outfit- I haven't been able to decide on any outfit. I love the villains (Maleficent and Evil Queen), so trying to be princessy is hard. Any suggestions out there.

Hip injury and CW-X tights- Rhonda mentioned loving her tights and also having an injury. Does anyone know if these tights give good compression for the hip area? I am having pain on one hip that is driving me crazy and looking for a little relief for it.

Good to know, I'm going to give that a try on my long run this weekend.

ugh...stupid snow and ice we are getting down here. I need to get in 2 runs this week and have no access to a treadmill. I guess tomorrow I will go for a walk to see if I can get a slow jog in...but am so paranoid about falling on the ice! I do have Wii, so will at least do that for some cardio, but I can't believe I am saying this...with the ice and no yaktrax thingies, that is not possible.

We got 5 inches last night of snow at my house which is a ton for Atlanta BTW and today its been sleeting so now there is a nice sheet of ice over the snow. Its going to stay colder than freezing through the weekend and I think we have more snow on the way. Yeah, its pretty, but i need to get a run in with no easy excuses!

Oh well, going to make cookies to drown my sorrows. ;) We have plenty of food and still have power! Thanks for letting me vent....if you have any suggestions or tips for getting in my 2 maintenance runs, feel free to share.

Oh and tinkeramy, good to see you here!
