Hello all,

I did my Week 5 Day 1 run this morning and my DH decided to join me, despite the fact that he has not worked out or trained at all in the last 4 weeks. After the warm-up walk, we began our first of 3 5 minute jogs. I went at my normal pace which is fairly slow, I know, but it is steady. DH took off like a shot as soon as the first jog started. But the end of the jog, he had joined me again, at which time he informed me that he had "slowed down" for me. By the second jog when he took off again, I was in tears and stayed that way for the rest of the workout.

I had so much self confidence before this morning. I thought I was doing really well. But then not only could I not keep up with him, but I didn't even make it as far as I usually do. So now I am really depressed and thinking that I will never be able to complete the Disney Princess 1/2 marathon.

Any encouragement would be much appreciated.

You'll be fine! :dance3:

First of all, men naturally run faster than women. They just do. If you're a new runner, and your husband is particularly athletic, there's definitely going to be a discrepancy in your speeds.

I'm sure you were doing REALLY well. For YOU! Run your race, not his. You will find when you get to the Princess Half that your body will be able to do amazing things, because you're putting in the hours to train now. There will be runners and run/walkers of all different speeds there.

Trying to go too fast, or to catch up with your husband, could risk injury, which would put your training on hold for a few weeks. Don't do it. Stay healthy and ENJOY running.

Good luck !

I ditto what amy just said. Keep up with your training and you will do your personal best. It does not matter how quick you are its that you are doing it. You will get the same medal as the person who finishes in first place. :) So think of running as a competition with yourself and no one else.:goodvibes

Don't let this get you down! My husband runs WAY faster than I do. It's not fair to yourself to try to compare. One of the best things about running is that it can be so individualized. Go at the pace that is right for you and move forward from there. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Yes, you can do it!! Do not give up!! :cheer2: When my dh was "training" with me, I could not keep up with him, either. It just helped that I had company and occaisionally I tried to pick up my speed to stay with him. But, if having your dh working out at the same time upsets you, then I would ask him to jog at another time. Unless he will just stay at your pace or slightly ahead to keep you motivated to keep going.

What the others said is so true - this is something you do for yourself and you will be able to finish the race in your time and receive that medal! My dh stayed with me during the marathon but, he has told me that if we do it again, he will do it at his own pace to see how good he can actually do. We went with another couple and they stayed together, though he could have gone faster too. She just kept focused on finishing that race the best she could...and she did!

BTW, my dh and I outpaced them in the first mile, but we ended up slowing down by taking photos and we all crossed the finish line together. DH and I could have finished a little ahead of them. And the guys could definitely have finished faster than both her and I.

Be positive and do not compare yourself to anyone except yourself. You will have good days and bad days all the way up to the marathon.

Does anyone know when the Princess is likely to sell out? I'm thinking of training for it after I finish my mini tri in Aug. I just have to talk dh into going to WDW again after we are there in Jan. ;)
Just wondering how long I'll have before I have to sign up. And do they give any warning as to when it is almost sold out?

They have updates on the site about how full the half is. Last time, they added more spaces due to the popularity. But, I really don't think it sold out very far in advance. I want to say it did maybe in month before? My advice, is that if you are interested to register. That way, you put your butt into gear and train for it. There are too many people who start "training" and just gauge when and if they will be ready on whether to register or not. If you register you have no choice but to go! ;) So, I would start pleading your case now!

Agreed. There is something about filling about that registration form that makes it much more real. The fear of stinking it up certainly helps me to get up for those early morning runs.

I have a friend that I may be running it with, and have to find out if she will have that weekend off before I commit.

Thanks.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I knew I could count on you!

Does anyone know if the registration cost is staying the same for next year? Just want to be prepared when it opens up next week!:)

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes up like the January races did.

Last year, it didn't fill until teh week befoer the race. Still, it would nto hurt to checck teh website evry now and tehn to see how full it is.

UGAFan - No idea on cost. Typicall, if they increase teh costs, it's by about $5. Never know, but it's not usually ahuge jump in cost.

I believe it was a much bigger jump this time. It went from $120 (I think) to $135 .

I just checked my Princess receipts and teh cost was teh same for 2009 and 2010. $128.50 with active.com fees.

For the January half, there was a big jump last year (or the year before but then stayed teh same for the next year. The full has only varied by ~$5 IIRC.

I just budgeted $150. Chances are, it will be less than that. But, just added some extra. I hope that if the price does go up (which it really shouldn't since they are moving the race up) that the goody bags have a lot more stuff! ;)

I am reading this thread and getting excited about the princess half! It will be my first half marathon. I have been working out for the past year or so on a regular basis, just haven't done a ton of running. But I was glad to hear that there are people who can walk and walk/run the distance and complete it within the time frame. Makes me feel like it is possible.

I am planning on doing a 10K at the end of November. Will the remaining time be enough for me to get ready for the half?

I am currently doing weight 3x/week and cardio 4 times per week, but I also have a lot of extra weight on me. So I know that will play a factor in it as well.

try reading marathoning for mortals they have great plans for walking, running or walk/run half and full marathons. It also has a lot of great tips and stories in it as well. Most of the plans are 14 weeks prior to race so if you start in nov. you will be good. I would recommend starting to run 3-4 times a week now to start to get your body used to it. Start small and gradually increase your time/length. A great progam to use is the Couch to 5K (c25K) which you can find on coolrunning.com These programs also have you do runs/walks 3-4x week and cross training 2Xwk with a day or 2 of rest. you should have a good start with the workouts you have been doing for the past year but if you start running now you will be even more prepared! Good luck! You can do it.

do most people come a few days before the race to see Disney or stay a few days after the race?

There are lots of people who make it a vacation weekend! My DH and I came in on Friday and didn't leave untilt the Monday after. I wish we could have stayed longer though. I think there were several people that stayed a bit longer!
