Official 2011 Disneyland Half Thread!

I'm starting to wish I had signed up for the SD R&R... a lot of my friends are doing it, but I decided to stick with Disney races... o well, guess I'll just have to do it another time.

I got in another 4+ miles today... wish I had done a bit more, but I'm pretty sore from doing circuits and I was wearing shoes that still need to be broken in (they're finally getting better).

Sarah- You can also look for physical therapists to see if they can help you. I've always gone to chiropractors and physical therapists. Mine have all specialized in sports injuries even.

My current PT actually used to compete on my college tri team and has (in my opinion) worked miracles for my knees, shins, and ankles. He's always been great when a new issue comes up and I'm sad to leave him in a month when I move to Florida.

It's just another option for you if you can't find a Sports Medicine Doctor close by...

Does anyone know if there's a way to find out what expo's RunDisney will have a booth at? I've tried emailing them but I never get an answer. I like to pick up the little fliers they pass out for their upcoming races and post them up at my desk here at work for some extra motivation. I had the one for the Princess up with the glass slipper on it and was wanting to get some for the other races I'm signed up for. Unfortunately the next expo in my city won't be until January...so I was wondering if they would be at any other expo close enough for me to make a day trip to or something...or maybe make a fun weekend out of it if it's somewhere in driving distance. I also emailed to ask if there was any way someone at RunDisney would mail me a few of these and was told they could not accomodate that...oh well, I had to at least try :)

I know they do the RnR events and most of the bigger races. Don't know where is Texas you are, but if there's a big race in Dallas, San Antonio or Houston, I'm sure they'd be there. I'll be in SD in 2 1/2 weeks so if you want me to pick some of the fliers up and mail them to you, PM me your address and I could get them to you if you like.

Did anyone get the email from the race today? I'm not really a big pin person, but they showed the picture of the pin and I love it! It's like a retro type image of DL. Think I'm going to have to order one.

I'm so excited for this race this year. I have 3 more races before DL, but for some reason, this is the race that I'm looking forward to the most.

I'm just outside of Houston...they were at the Houston Marathon expo this year in January, but didn't have any fliers :( That is super-nice of you to offer to pick some up for me and I may just take you up on that...I'll PM you.

I got the email today and saw that pin too. I went ahead and ordered it when I registered though and I'm glad I did, it's cute. I'm not a pin collector or anything but my BF started buying the pins at the races he runs and he displays them with the medal. I bought the one at the Princess so I guess I gotta keep it going now :)

You could probably also look through some running magazines. I think they said they had some of the ads in there as well. Also, they have a lot of the pictures/ads up on the RunDisney facebook page if you're not opposed to printing them off.

I love the idea though! Hm... maybe I'll try something similar. Right now I have my Princess, Disneyland, and Silverman (a tri I did last year) hanging up next to my bed to keep me motivated...

You probably won't see them at an expo around here until San Antonio in November or Dallas/White Rock in December. None of our other races this summer or fall are big enough to bring them in.

Runners Magazine has Disney ads that you could display on your desk. They had an ad for the Disneyland Half in the April issue and I have just posted that above my desk. :) The June issue has an ad for the Wine and Dine Half in September.
Happy Running!
Pam

I got my e-mail, yesterday, it ended up in the spam folder. After hearing you talk about the pin, I decided, I may only be doing this race once, get the pin.

Right now, I'm trying to decide if I want to try for a PR, or use Disneyland as a Training race for an October Half. I've never to 2 half marathons that close together before. The 3 I've done before have been 5-6 months apart. Right now, I'm thing about Columbus, OH mid October. I ran the race last year, it's a mostly flat well run race.

For some reason, I did not get the email about the pin. I may order them for my sister any myself. Is there anyone who would mind sending it to me?
Thanks, Pam

Pam - Try checking your spam folder. Mine ended up there.

I thought people might like to know I got a package from Cliff today. I signed up for their pace team and they sent me a free sample of Cliff shot, Cliff shot blocks, and a Cliff Bar.

I still have the email if you want me to send it to you. Just PM me your email address.

That's a tough call. DL is flat except for an underpass at the start, an overpass as we turn onto Ball at about 4.25, and another underpass on Lewis right after Mile 6. I think in theory you could PR at DL, the problem is the congestion you could run into in the parks. In the past it's been leaving DCA at Soarin and entering DL. There's one tunnel in the backstage area of DL that can get a little crowded, but outside the parks around Anaheim, there's no problem with crowds. The streets and area they give you to run are really wide open, and passing/getting around people should be easy.

You could try and PR DL and then try again in October. I think you shouldn't have that much of a problem w/ a month and 1/2 in b/w the races. I've done 1/2's a month apart and not had a problem. Unlike this year where I have one in San Francisco and the following weekend in Providence, looked at the calendar wrong so that should be a lot of fun.:rotfl: Just go a little easy the 1st week after and then keep up your mileage and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice. That's the big question "Do I want to try for a PR at DL, or do I want to run a good race and have fun?" Right now, my thoughts are 4 mile "warmup" through the parks taking pictures and having fun, Running a solid race through Anaheim. With 9 days of vacation planned for after the race, I don't want to push so hard I can't enjoy it.

If it were me, I'd run DL to have fun and PR your race later in October. I view the Disney races as fun runs. I would rather take pictures, slap high fives with the crowds, and enjoy myself all the way along than spend mental energy focusing on my pace, how I'm feeling, and what my splits are.

Thanks for posting about the E-mail. Mine certainly did wind up in my SPAM folder. Stupid!! The pin is super cute, I went ahead and ordered one. Mostly for my DD because she really gets excited about my races and tries to steal my medal. She and DH collect pins at at DL so I figure she can have a race pin and brag about her mommy!! :-) I did order her a pin for the Tinker Bell 1/2 as well.

Really hoping my DH finds a job really soon so I can justify signing them up for the ChEAR Squad. I try to make things as easy on my DH at these races as possible.

Yep, that's kind of what I figured too. Oh well...I'll get some motivation from something :)

My BF just got his confirmation from the Houston Marathon that he is officially one of the 2000 granted early registration with a qualifying time....which happened to be his time for DL last year. He's super excited! This year's Houston marathon was his first 26.2 and it didn't go exactly as he'd hoped...big cramping issues at only half way through the race...but he finished running and I was so proud of him for not giving up. By the end of that day he'd already decided he wanted to do it again to prove he could do one with no issues...so it's redemption time now! :woohoo:

I really only run the Disney races, but I found the WDW races to have more distractions so I think I'm going to use DL to try and get my PR. I've only run DL last year and Princess this past Feb and I ran 15 minutes faster at DL so I figured that will be my PR race anyway.

I would definitely skip the PR at DL. I ran my first half at WDW a few years ago, and I ran the race 'seriously'. My biggest regret was not stopping for pictures and enjoying it more. Since then, I've saved my PRs for other races and just had fun at Disney. While running the half in 2010 (as part of the Goofy), I actually blurted out out loud, "I didn't come all this way and spend all this money NOT to stand in line for 10 minutes for Jack Sparrow." :rotfl2: It cracked up the people around me, but didn't win me any sanity points. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I'm with you, most of my races are Disney. I'm going to enjoy myself but still have my 'wish time' on my mind. If I beat it, awesome. If I don't, no sweat. Well there will be sweat, but that's different. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Since I'm not super serious about half marathons (like trying to get a qualifying time for some other race...) the picture time is added into my PR. There were more picture opportunities at the Princess race and so my time showed it. In honesty, if I took out the 5 min for Pirates and 15-20 min for the King and Queen Mickey and Minnie, then I probably would have beat my PR.

I definitely have a "wish time" for DL (realistic goal: beat 3:15.00, "wish" goal: break 3 hours), but that's not going to stop me from taking pictures when I want to.
