We have an office candy jar, sits on the windowsill by my desk. People take, and fill, as needed. I just don't understand why people would come by and take handfuls 5 - 6 times a day (and of course, those are the people that never contribute to it!). Grrrr, just one of my little irks. Buy your own dang candy!

I keep a candy jar (a large red hershey's kiss) on the conference table in my office. I keep it stocked with kisses - which I rarely eat. It is there for the people who drop by or are meeting at the table or just stopping by to say hi.

I agree with you. Most are very polite and take a piece or two, but there are others who treat your jar as their personal stash. This is why I don't have a candy dish on my desk anymore. You know their Mom didn't raise them to be this way (at least that's what my mom always told me!!).

90% of the office is great with it, we even have several attorneys that will fill it up (because one always complains we need better candy!). It is not my jar. It was here before I got here, and it will be here after I leave. You just don't need to make a meal out of it!

I agree with you guys. It would be okay if they took a a piece or two- but they have no need taking a handful with them.

I've had issues like this in the past. If it gets bad, I'll leave it empty. When someone comes by, I'll say "I'm buying more this weekend. If you want some before then, you're welcome to buy some yourself and fill it up." That usually makes them at least think twice.

But my general attitude is that I'm willing to fill it to a certain dollar amount. If they want more, they can pay for it.

And yes, some people still just wait until it's filled then come back and help themselves.

I know what you mean the teacher next to me had a candy jar and I filled it more than she did I think I could never go in and take the candy if I felt I had not contributed. Now there was a teacher on the other side who I for lack of a better word I "dispised" . It drove me crazy when she would come in and take candy and NEVER EVER attempt to refill OR even say thanks. I guess that is why she is so unpopular with me...she thinks that the "world owes her a living" so to speak.

I started at my desk with candy for people...which I pay for and supply as a treat to my fellow workers, but when they come by and suggest what I should be stocking in it  umm...I spend a tidy little amount each month replenishing it, just take a piece and move on... :goodvibes ;)

Ahh!! I was just going to mention that, too!! As they say, moochers can't be choosers!!

I feel your pain! I work in a cubicle type thing that there are 4 of us in here and the walls between us come just above our armrests...the guy that sits right next to me drives me crazy. I'll go to UDF and buy a bad of chips or some snack I want... it's sitting on my desk and I'll snack on it as I work...he'll reach across onto my desk and help HIMSELF and that's not it...then he'll complain how he doesn't even like it and he shouldn't be eating it...UH...HELLO you shouldn't be. It's not YOURS!!! Some people are so rude!!! He'll tell people that call in way too much info. about himself that they really don't care to know... when most people ask "how are you"... they REALLY don't want to know that it hurts when you pee ... he drives me nuts.

Ahhh I feel better now :) thanks for the vent!!! I feel much better now

I used to keep a jar of candy on my desk. I rarely had any contributions to the jar and many who would come by several times a day for a few pieces. I still never really minded it and kept it full on a regular basis. At some point, I must have been in a bad mood or just tired of the same people taking handfuls, I took it off my desk and put it away. A few days later, one of my co-workers came by and asked me where my candy jar was. Now mind you, he only came into my office for candy and nothing else. I said it was all gone and I put it away. His response was "You are lying. I know you have candy and you hid it. So where is it!" I wanted to take the jar and throw it upside his head. Needless to say, the jar never came out again and my boss was notified of his totally unappropriate behavior.

I used to have a candy jar, too, & every once in awhile I would add chocolate to the mix.

One time a manager told me that I didn't have any good candy in there, so I asked him what his favorite candy was, and when he told me I told him to give me some money & I would make sure his favorite candy would be in there. He never mentioned again that he didn't like my selection of candy. :)

I also don't have a problem with telling people to be nice and share, or to fill up the candy jar next time if they have been grabbing handfuls.

At my old job, when I first started, my boss had this fancy box that had candy in it. About a week or two after I stared, this broker comes over to me and asks when I'm going to fill the candy. I'm thinking, I'm an admin assistant and you're a broker making 6 figures and you expect me to fill the candy...I don't think so.

I told him that I don't fill it, but he was more than welcome to go buy some candy for it anytime. My boss had no problem with me telling him this either since he was such a scrounge. The dish never got filled again.

But this guy...stories go on about him. One of the other broker's in the office was buying pizza and cake for his assistant for her birthday. We worked closely together, so he had me coordinate things. No problem. The other guy sees the pizza arrive just as he's heading out to a meeting. Meanwhile, the girl who's birthday it was was out doing some errands and due back in about 1/2 hour. Wouldn't you know that before this guy heads out to his meeting, he stops and asks if he can take some pizza with him since he has to go. I just looked at him and said "It's T's birthday and H bought the pizza, so you'll have to ask him, but since she's not even here, I don't think we should be cutting into it right now."

By this point the guy was making millions and he's too dang cheap to go buy himself lunch. I couldn't stand him.

You should buy some gag candy - that turns you mouth blue or tastes like garlic or hot pepper - and slip it into the jar just as a candy hog approaches. That would be an awesome prank, especially if you get to see his/her face when they taste the gag piece.

We have an empty jar with a label on it that says "sweets fund" on it. It works out well. When it's empty there's no candy and people remember to drop a dollar in there. We also use it to buy cakes or cookies or whatever.

As long as I am not filling it myself, I don't care who eats what. DH works in a team with all guys and he has brought treats in several times. Girl Scout cookies, homemade, etc. He says you would not believe how fast that food disappears. After Halloween we had candy left over and since I was trying to watch what I ate, I didn't want it in the house. He took it to work and it was gone! Now whenever we have something we don't want around, he takes it in and they all eat it up in no time!

I used to work a job that I was just there on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. I worked by myself basically so that clients could come in those days and make payments. I had a litttle candy jar on my desk because a lot of times people would bring their kids and a little piece of candy goes a long way in helping the little guys not mind running errands. I got a bit annoyed when I would get there on Friday after leaving the jar full on Sat to find it empty, so I started only leaving a few pieces in there when I left and stashing the rest in my desk. What cracked me up was that the few pieces were never gone. They only took it if the jar was full. Guess they didn't want to be so obvious.

If people take turns filling it, it's not so bad, but I agree it is annoying and seems so common that the ones who eat the most never are the ones who are filling it!

The docs at the hospital I work at are the worst. Always complaining about whats in the jar. Or only stopping by for the candy. And then hovering over it till the have eaten way more than their share.
