Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I watched last night and to be honest, I wish I wouldn't have. I was starting to like Fantasia more but thought she was way to cocky during her interview (and had some really stupid answers, IMHO). Diana did nothing but giggle -- endlessly! Jasmine was sweet but when she sang it was like rubbing salt in a wound. The thing I found the most interesting was that Paula's leather pants were soooo tight that she couldn't sit down properly and the shirt looked like it was strangling her. I must have been in a stinky mood last night because the banter between Simon and Ryan was even more annoying than usual. I think this season of American Idol has just about run it's course with me.

I watched it last night. I thought Fantasia was actually more humble than usual. Diana was annoying and Jasmine wasn't thankful enough. Then she sang, which just made me ask - why don't they just change the name of the show to "Continental US American Idol" and get rid of her already?

Did anyone catch that show on the WB afterwards? Where they keep the "bad" singer? I caught the first 1/2 hour and thought it was hilarious!!!!

I totally missed the show last night - can you guys give me some details? Please?

Well, Fantasia likes to eat a lot and watch TV! She was actually quite funny while she was being interviewed!

Diana was her usual nice, bubbly self. Jasmine sounded really down to Earth.

Honestly, I have no musical talent, so I like them all.

:sunny:

grinningghost, you didn't really miss anything. It was a total waste of an hour, with really no new information about anyone. They interviewed Randy first, and he of course said Fantasia should win hands down, and that he knew it was going to be a "girls" season. Then Paula was interviewed and the only thing I can remember her saying is the reason she isn't as harsh as Simon or Randy in her comments is because being a singer herself she knows what it feels like to be up on stage and under pressure. She didn't really say who she thought would win, just that they would probably all end up being successful recording artists.

Then he interviewed Jasmine who didn't relly have much to say other than this is hard work, especially because she still has to go to school during the week as well as work on her singing. Her answers seemed a little trite, but I know that's because of her age. She did ok.

Then Fantasia came out and some of her answers seemed very immature. She was asked several different questions like what do you miss about home, and what are you hobbies at home and things like that. She answered "food" for several questions which I thought was a little odd. Who knows, maybe she was hungry. :hyper: She did bring up again the fact that she was "a mommy" and that she had to grow up fast. Her daughter's name is pronounced Zyan, but I have no idea how it is spelled.

The last one to come out was Diana, and she pretty much giggled a lot and gave some pretty typical "pageant like" answers. She did pretty well under the circumstances. She said she isn't really nervous, and she was pretty sure from the beginning that she'd be one of the last ones standing.

All 3 girls sang a song that they had previously sung before as well.

I pretty much felt afterwards that I wasted an hour of my life watching that!

I thought Jasmine was well received last night. I didn't hear any boos. She's struggling though. She tried to put more into her performance last night, but just didn't do anything for me. Great kid though. We must remember - she's just a kid.

I watched the end of Good Day Live today and they had emails about the voting. One was from a girl scout troop who all voted for Jasmine last week because the judges made her cry and they felt bad for her. They all programmed their computers to *power vote* for them tallying a total of 16,000 voted for her during the 2 hours period.

It's because of these computer power voters the results have seemed out of whack with what people expect. Some people doing this vote for the person that was slammed the hardest by the judges just to screw with them, others are just crazy fans that want their favorite to stick around.

Personally I have no clue how to power vote and usually just send a few votes in for my favorite of the night.

"Jasmine dawg..what's going down?! I don't know...I just didn't feel you. It just didn't do it for me." -- Fantasia (aka Telly!)

Jasmine, I hate to say this, but you might just have a very good chance that you will win this AI, but as you know Jasmine, your voice is just alright, nothing special and it doesn't do it for most of us. When you do win Jasmine, go take a singing lesson to improve your voice before making an album, you don't want to embarrass yourself.

Even if you fail tonite's competition, it doesn't matter, the whole Islands will be right behind you to support you. Sit back and relax, no need to put effort cause I think it's all about Hawaiian pride. Hawaiians want to be recongnize in the mainland.

Heck I don't know what I am saying. Maybe cause I am upset that my favorite singer is gone and that the voting system is screwy. Hawaiians have 6 hours to vote! But why can't we vote after 2 hours? Will the phone system know if we're calling from Hawaii or from the mainland?

I may be wrong, but I don't think Hawaiians get 6 hours to vote, but because of the time difference they are voting 5 or 6 hours later than East Coast .....so by the time they start voting the lines are already shut off on most of the mainland giving less competition to get through......so because of competition for the lines, mainlanders might not have been able to get their votes through for the non-Jasmine competitors during their voting time slot.....

Distorted 'American Idol' voting due to an overtaxed American phone grid?

By Wade Paulsen, 05/18/2004

After the shocking ousters of favored contestants LaToya London and Jennifer Hudson, leaving three less-talented teenagers in pursuit of victory in Fox's American Idol 3, a review of Idol's voting system was probably to be expected. What wasn't expected was the degree of chaos and error present in the system as currently constituted -- and the fact that the Idol producers have been aware of the problems for a long time but seem instead to have embraced the windfall that the chaos creates for one of Idol's sponsors.

The major controversy in the ouster of LaToya revolved around the fact that Jasmine Trias, the 17-year-old Hawaiian who gave two dismal performances during the show's "Disco Night," wasn't even in the bottom two. On Thursday of last week, Verizon (the legacy phone carrier cobbled together from the merger of the former NYNEX, Bell Atlantic and GTE networks) reported that Hawaii, with its 1.2 million residents, cast more Idol votes, 1.3 million, than any other state within Verizon's coverage area except for California and New York -- two states that dwarf Hawaii's population. By contrast, New Jersey, with a population of 8.6 million (over seven times Hawaii's size), cast only 1.2 million votes.

The first reactions to Verizon's information were discussions about Hawaiian pride in Jasmine (as in this E! Online article), which seems to be the result that Verizon, which is planning to sell its Hawaiian grid, intended. On second look, however, these numbers reveal a deep problem that runs to the roots of Idol -- the ability of a small number of "power voters" to distort the weekly results, making the show less appealing to the majority of viewers.

Verizon also reported that Hawaiians tried to cast 5 million votes, meaning that 3.8 million calls (presumably overwhelmingly for Jasmine) failed to get through -- or, looking at it from the other side, only 24% of the calls placed by potential Hawaiian voters resulted in votes being cast. The high volume of calls placed (over 4 per resident -- and we doubt that everybody in Hawaii is voting) and the high number of incomplete calls raises questions about WHY Idol has opted for such a voting system.

Broadcasting & Cable Magazine reports that phone industry sources say that the chaos resulting from the number of phone calls placed to Idol is simply inevitable in an overtaxed voice system. Who benefits? The cellular phone company that provides Idol's text messaging services: AT&T Wireless.

As we previously reported, the Idol 2 finale vote between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard produced 230 million calls -- of which only 21.5 million, or 9.3%, got through. However, in text messaging calls, for which AT&T Wireless charges 10 cents a pop, 2.5 million got through -- representing every call that was placed.

Of course, text messaging takes up much less bandwidth than voice telephony. Nevertheless, because Fox has not taken any public action to discourage "power dialers," it has permitted the creation of a logjam in the voice phone system, seemingly in hopes of pushing voters to text phones.

A year ago, Idol producers acknowledged that about 100 "phreaks" using autodialer systems were attempting to cast thousands of votes for their favorite candidates. Although the producers claimed that they reserved the right to remove all the votes cast by anyone who tried to cast significantly more than 500 voted (a claim that producer Ken Warwick recently repeated to MTV), the fact remains that "power dialers" can tie up the voice network and make sure that everyone else trying to call gets busy signals -- and even humans trying to place 500-600 votes in two hours are expressing a degree of fanatacism that makes the votes of most show viewers irrelevant to the outcome.

In addition, Broadcast & Cable reports that a well-known tech expert "laughed" when he heard Idol producers say that there were only 100 or so "phreaks" attempting to influence the voting. Instead, he claimed that there were "thousands upon thousands of moderately tech-savvy fans who really get emotionally compelled to do something about who they want to win. It could be anybody with a computer, a modem, and a phone line." So much for simple fixes.

So why does Idol permit such a blatant distortion in the vote totals? Why not use the Internet, as CBS did with its recent Survivor $1 million prize? Warwick defends not using the Web by telling MTV that "people generally have to leave their television sets to vote on the Internet, [and since that means they're] not watching the rest of the contestants, therefore, it's not fair" -- ignoring the obvious facts that (1) at least for East Coast and Central viewers, who see the show live, the poll can be timed to not appear on the Web until after Idol ends, and (2) the "millions of voters" that he claims try to cast phone votes during the show's live airing aren't watching it either. We presume that this statement shouldn't be taken as a reflection of Warwick's intelligence, just as an indication of his lack of skill at prevarication.

A simple alternative would be to limit the number of votes cast per person -- but that would make AT&T's text messaging franchise fairly worthless. Indeed, we wonder if the consequence of an article like this one isn't just to encourage the people who really, really care about the outcome to turn to text messaging, increasing AT&T's windfall. However, the consequence of this problem for Fox may be that people who care but don't really, really care decide to turn the show off instead.

Maybe now we know why NBC has decided to directly target American Idol 4 with its upcoming series The Contender.

Yeah, I guess I didn't miss much, although I would have liked to see them perform again, just to reaffirm my favorites/least favorites.

There's always tonight.:D

Has this been confirmed? I thought everyone votes for only 2 hours.

I know that Hawaii is 6 hours behind the East Coast but I don't believe that because of that, they get 6 hours to vote. Does that mean that California gets 3 hours to vote since they are 3 hours behind the East Coast? I don't think so. I believe it means that CA votes for 2 hours after their telecast just like EST people do and Hawaii does.

I just did a TV search and Honolulu watches American Idol at 7:00p their time (tonight anyway). That itself could be why they are able to vote so much in their 2 hours, if they are voting at 2:00a EST and 11:00p in California! The lines are nice and clear for them to vote if that's the case.

I think it's just that the whole state of Hawaii has rallied together to vote for their home girl and they are not competing with East Coasters when they do vote...that's all.

People in California do not watch the show live. As far as I know, nobody does. What we see is taped. I starts here at 8pm (PST). When it's over, it is midnight on the east coast.

oh, you are right! I think I was thinking of the results show. So that means we all call at different times anyway. I still think Hawaii's advantage is that they are calling at 8:00p their time which is 2:00a EST!

As far as I see it, two of the girls definately deserve to be there, but the other does not. Fantasia is a good singer, but is annoying. Her answers last night were pretty immature and cocky. Diana, I believe has come so far in the competition. Both her voice and performance have improved tremendously. Jasmine on the other hand does not have as strong of a voice as the other two; therefore, I do not believe she should still be in the competition. All my votes are going to Diana, I believe she is the best one there. Her age only leaves room to keep on improving as she has already shown!

I just read an article in the local paper on the Power votes. AI can toss out votes if they feel they are from computer generated power voting. If they can do that then they can do it to have the results be however they want. I'm going to see if I can find a link to the article on line. Not sure if the Buffalo News has one or not.

found the article..hope this works.

I can't believe the judges! She was GREAT!!!!! The best ever for her! Go Jasmine!!!!::yes::

edited to add that I'm talking about Jasmine's FIRST song...she even gave me goose bumps at one point.

I didn't enjoy the second song.

Diana was alright...good but not her best.

I still cannot stand Fantasia no matter what she sings...she sounds like Donald Duck.

She sounded good until that horrid last note. Doesn't matter, she'll get votes if she BARKED the Star Spangled Banner....

First songs picked:

Jasmine singing Whitney... I don't know what to say, I agree with the judges. Not good enough.

Fantasia...she did a wonderful job! I agree with the judges.

Diana sings "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"...I think she did really good, I'm not sure if I agree with the judges on that one. But I don't think it is her best performance....but she is definitely much better than Jasmine.

Blech! I hated that second song that Jasmine just mangled.
