Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

Here in the Chicagoland area the weather was very nasty. We missed 1/2 of LaToya's performance due to updates on the areas tornados. Several people in this area were in their basements, lost power and phone service at the time AI was on. Seeing that Jennifer is from this area it's possible she lost alot of votes simply because of mother nature and it was just bad timing on when the storms hit. If it were a typical night around here, who knows if the results would have been different.

I actually thought about that last night too. We were in the basement Tuesday night during parts of the show since they flashed on cable that a funnel cloud had been spotted in our town. A number of people lost power at different points on Tuesday night, and in central Illinois a small town got hit pretty hard. I wondered aloud last night if the inclement weather may have effected any of the votes for Jennifer. I suppose we shall never know for certain.

I cannot believe that anyone thinks that John Stephens is anywhere near as talented as any of the remaining singers. I know it is personal opinion & everyone is entitled to their own, but come on! He didn't just have one bad night. He has consistently been off-key. I am embarrased for him to go up on that stage week after week & sound sooooo bad. It's hard to watch. Of course, this is JMHO. :D

I thought last night was one of the BEST Idol shows ever. It was pretty dramatic. I didn't appreciate Seacrest's comments about how we must vote for the "talent" so that people like Jennifer don't get eliminated. Sorry, I don't care for Jennifer's way of singing. It's just too over the top for me. I would never buy a CD of hers. I'd definitely buy a John Stevens CD before I bought a Jennifer Hudson one.

BTW, I voted for who I thought was the most talented, Jasmine and Fantasia.

He had one bad night, which was when he sang My Girl, that's it. He hasn't been off key in any other songs, as opposed to George, who has had 2 bad nights in a row. Yet people continue to say bad things about John and not George.

Crocodile Rock???? Holy cow was that bad! I truly believe everyone has their own opinion & I respect yours, I just can't believe there are people out there who think he is good (obviously there are a lot of them), I just don't see (hear) it.

I really liked his performance of Crocodile Rock! It was so different from what he usually sings and I thought he did a great job with it. I guess a lot of other people thought so too because he was not in the bottom that week. I think the reason people didn't like that performance is because it's not what they're used to from him (but then again most people probably don't even care how good he sings, they just hate him).

Well if by teenybopper you mean a 45 mother of 3 then I guess you are describing me! I vote for John...not because he is cute but because I like how he sings...no attitude, no dramatics, no "yeah, yeah yeah", no big stupid grin, no bouncing....just goes up and sings, takes his critique and goes on with his life. he is more mature at 16 then Fantasia is at taking critique.

He can only sing big band songs. And he can only imitate the singer. Kind of like when Dana Carvey does an impersonation of the president. John can only imitate. That is SO obvious when they ask him to sing something other then the ones he apes. There is no way he is going to make it in this competition and I will be thrilled when he is gone.

That's exactly the way I took it, and it is comments like those which push me to vote even harder for John Stevens!

ROFLMAO! How old are you? Sounds just like one of those teeny boppers I am speaking of! Thanks for proving my point!

JS has never had a good night! LOL!

Um excuse me, but who the hell do you think you are? You proved no point at all. I happen to be an almost 20 year old college student and I don't consider myself a teenybopper or stupid. If you have a problem with who I like and vote for, then that's your problem. And how about next time you feel like insulting someone, just keep your mouth shut, because you're just making yourself look dumb and immature.

For those of you who say that most popular person is being voted through by America, I would agree with you IF (and that's a very big "if"), they only allowed one vote from each phone number. Then I could agree that this person is being voted for based on popularity rather than talent. However, from other websites, I've read of teenage girls who brag about voting over 1,000 times in a 2 hour period for Howdy Doody. This totally negates the concept of popularity OR talent in the results.

There are people on this board who keep saying that the "popular" singers are going to be the ones who sell the most CD's. Let's look at the potential dollars behind this "popularity" contest:

1,000 votes cast by one 14 year old teenage girl for Howdy Doody = 1 potential CD sale

1,000 votes cast by 1,000 people for Jennifer Hudson= 1,000 potential CD sales

Guess who is more "popular" now?

Allowing these multiple votes is really screwing up the results.

Wow! Lots of John Stevens hatred over here. LOL. DD put in like 15 votes for JS. Why? Well, she says she likes the way he sings. DD is 8. She had those fingers voting right until bed time. I bet he becomes a huge success in a Harry Conick Jr. type of way. Idol probably isn't the best contest for him to showcase what he's best at.

If they eliminated based on who was the worst for the week, George would be gone. He was really bad Tuesday night. However, I'm actually pleased to see Jennifer gone. She disturbs me for some reason. My favorite is Latoya and I'd love for her to take the title. She's a classy lady.

HOLY Heck folks we are discussing a TV show. Can we please stop the personal attacks?
Any more and we will be taking the appropriate actions

Just like i am glad that jennifer is gone. To each their own. But please don't attack someone just because they have different tastes then yours.

I want to know how these girls get through 1000 times? I vote and most times get a busy signal. I think in 2 hours we got through maybe 10 times for John..the rest were busy. Last year I could NEVER get through for Clay.
They must be doing text voting, which costs money...how do 14 year old girls afford that?

I'm really tired of reading the insults and some of the nastiness that is starting to come about. This is why I stopped posting for along time. I came back because I enjoyed the AI thread. This is not a fun thread anymore.

I must admit I am one of those that was upset with the results of last night. I do think that John was the one that should have went, BUT...I do think he has a great voice and will be a very talented singer. He needs some time to grow and the songs they have to choose from to sing each week are not his forte, as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole experience isn't overwhelming him. But he should have a great career in his future!
Obviously there can't be a true American Idol since everyone has different tastes and opinions.
All of these young people have to be given credit for having the guts to get up there each week and try to give the public what they want from them!! Kudos to each of them!!

Great post. ITA!

Interestingly enough, Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest were talking on Entertainment Tonight this evening about the people (mostly teenagers) who were dialing 1000's of times. Apparently there are some speed dialers you can buy and things you can download from the internet to get in 1000's of votes in a short period of time. Paula's suggestion was for everyone to get these devices so that others can vote 1000's of times, too. Something I'm certainly not willing to do! (I'm too computer illiterate to figure out how to find and download something like this on the internet anyway - LOL!!!! I'm also too cheap to go out and buy such a device for something like American Idol!)

Maybe rather than making the calls toll-free, they should charge 50 cents for each vote. I don't think people would be willing to put their money where their mouth is to vote 1000's of time if there was a cost associated with it. (Either that or some parents will be questionning their teens about those Tuesday evening calls when they get a load of that phone bill! :sunny: )
