Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I won't be watching anymore now that Jennifer was voted off - I thought for sure she would be there til the end.

I'm also in favor of changing the voting system to voting for the person you want to LEAVE. I know people are more passionate about voting for the people they like, but I think it would be a fairer competition if the votes were for the person to be kicked off, JMHO.

I also believe that voting for the person that you think should leave, as well as limiting the voiting to one call per phone number would produce more accurate results. I don't think it would matter if there were less votes, and besides, judging from how passionate people on these boards are regarding who should have been voted off, I bet there would be plenty of votes. Another idea may be to add internet voting like they do on Trading Spaces Home Free. This way people wouldn't be blocked out by a busy signal.

Why? Maybe someone can explain why he should be the new American Idol. He is so far beneath the others, and as the judges say it could all be because of his age. Maybe in 2 years or so he would be up to the caliber of singers they are really looking for. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice kid, but he can't sing very well - at least not compared to the others. You can even tell HE feels that way when the camera pans to him. I wonder if he'll end up taking himself out of the competition? Remember Christina Christenson? She was eliminated one week so there was no voting (she was sent to the hospital for being unwell- rumor had it she couldn't handle the pressure and had a mini breakdown).

Do you think that John would take himself out?

I don't see what anyone sees in John either. He has no talent. I can't imagine anyone voting on his looks either because he is not cute at all to put it nicely. He does look like Stan Laurel only Stan is better looking. LOL! I don't know why someone would vote anyone on looks in this show anyway as it is not a beauty contest. It is supposed to be on talent. I imagine it has to be a bunch of teenyboppers voting for him because there is no way adults would vote for him even if they thought he was cute. After all, adults are smart enough to know it is a talent contest.

..Who do you think is going to have a successful carreer in the music industry? Jennifer or John? It won't be John. This is it for him. Jennifer,on the otherhand,WILL get a record deal,no doubt about it. the kid is not going to win AI,and once the voting stops,so does the kid's music career.

There IS a way adults would vote for him...I have a different opinion than you that's all. I'm not stupid, but I do like John. I don't think he's a hunk either so I'm not voting on his looks.

Why does everyone who dislikes John have to insult those who do? It's call a difference of opinion. That's all it is. To each his own.

I haven't read any of the posts about last night's results show so maybe this has already been said.

Why does everyone get so mad at the results? So what if America kept JS in. The judges think it's unfair and they make a point to let us know to vote on talent, not popularity. Well, if you think about it-most contests are based on popularity. Do they really think that telling America to vote strictly on talent will work?
If they are upset with the way America votes, then maybe they should revamp the way the results go. Let the judges pick who goes and who stays.
Why even call it American Idol if they don't accpet the voting system.

BTW-Jennifer Hudson will have a future of singing ahead of her, even though I won't be buying any album by her.

To each their own.....

When the PRODUCER of the show says that "America got it wrong" that just sends a message that makes me mad. Telling people what they should like is going to get them into trouble every time.

Hey, dudes - this is the way the show works. The person who gets the most votes, wins. It's not necessarily the best singer every time, either.

I'm upset Jennifer is gone this week - she didn't deserve to go, but look at last season. The order is skewed as far as I'm concerned, but that's the way it works.

I gave MULTIPLE votes to Jennifer, because she blew me away...and Weekend in New England is one of my very favorite songs in the whole world, so I'm very critical of anyone else singing it. I also gave Diana a few votes (though not as many), because I thought she was the most improved of the bunch - she didn't do a "pageant rendition" this week, and it was fabulous.

Last night was a JOKE. I admit, I vote once and quit. No more! Last night's show proves we must do what the KIDS do and vote over and over and over.

Tuesday night is my eBay night but I'm just going to have to stop earlier so I can get my votes on!! Allowing semi talents to move out true singers is an abomination. AI will lose in the long run, at least I hope so.

I don't dislike John Stevens but he can't hold a candle to most of the people there and he knows it. Diana shouldn't have made it this far but there were a few worse than her. I hope last night's fiasco puts the powers that be in the war room to make better decisions about the way voting is done.

ONE per phone number, is that a hard concept????

John is a "nice kid" but he has no stage presence, cannot hold a note and his voice has no power. Jennifer Hudson was ROBBED.

I agree, it seems those who have an opposite opinion of anything on this board find it makes them feel better to put the other person down. It definitely tells a lot about that person, IMO.

I would never insult anyone for having a different opinion than mine. If you like JS, that is your opinion. He seems to be a very nice kid. I think he is incredibly uncomfortable in the limelight. I wonder if this was even his idea or if his family pushed him into it. Each week, he looks like a deer caught in a headlight. I think he would be happy to be voted off. The music business is difficult for the most seasoned performer, I just hate to see a kid go through something that he isn't ready for. He has a nice voice, but I've heard just as nice at DD's high school. If by some fluke, he wins AI he will be a flash in the pan. IMO, he just doesn't seem to have the stage presence or drive to make it.

There is no way John should have gotten this far. He has no diversity in his singing unlike Latoya and George. Although George has not performed well these past few weeks he is still a good singer and deserves to go further in the competition although not win..

As far as Jennifer goes I am happy she was voted out. To me she seems like a big baby and pouted when she was put into the bottom 3 in previous weeks.

I agree that there should be a 1 vote per phone # but realistically we know this wont happen because the people who are text messaging in pay per text messaging and thats where ATT makes their money and thats the almighty ruler......

This contest is nothing more than a popularity contest not a talent contest. My husband sings karaoke and has a pretty good voice and when we've gone to competitions its all about how many people you bring with you and how you look. Unfortunetely for him we dont travel with a huge group of people and he isnt Brad Pitt....

I don’t deny that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that an “opinion” can’t really be wrong. But, say you ask someone what they think smells better, a rose or a skunk. They have every right to think the skunk smells better. But wouldn’t you be curious about why they felt that way? I really am just curious about what people see in John. I don’t hear many of his supporters say he’s a good singer – just that they think he’s cute or they like him. That’s fine, but it doesn’t seem fair to vote for him on that basis and deny the title to someone who really deserves it based on their singing ability. But, whatever! It is only a TV show and hopefully the deserving ones will get the recording contracts. I may have to stop watching it though since the unfairness of it is frustrating to me.

Last night's show was an insult. The premise of this show was the worlds greatest "talent" competition. Not, who is the cutest. You may or may not like Jennifer, I know I am not overly fond of Fantasia, but both Fantasia and Jennifer can sing circles around Diana and John Stevens.

What I found refreshing last night was that the judges finally have admitted openly that this show has become a huge popularity contest and nothing more. Each of the judges basically said that after Jennifer was kicked to the curb. Even sweet Paula said that she thinks that JPLs fan base may have switched to John S. In other words they aren't voting based on purely talent alone.

John S may be a nice guy but I don't see how his talent can match Fantasia, LaToyas or Jennifer's. Imagine John S competing and singing against Clay, Rueben, Kelly Clarkson, Tamyra Grey or Kimberley Locke. Seriously. Compared to any to any of them he is like watching a H.S. review.

I think in the next 2 weeks you are going to see more ploys by the producers to put some of the others in a favorable light (like what they did with Fantasia's kid) because they know they will not make back their investment on John S. I will watch this show to the end, just to see how this circus turns out, but if John is in the final two, this will be my last year to watch unless they find some way to even out the voting next year.

Definately his idea.

Wow! I can rarely say that I agree with EVERYTHING someone has said, but I think sgtdisney's post is right on the money!

ONE per phone number, is that a hard concept????

So which person in my BIL's family of 6 gets to decide who to vote for. One vote per phone won't work.

I am admittingly, not a fan of the show. I understand exactly what you are complaining about. The voting system isn't fair....BUT that is the system. It really cannot be changed until next season (if there is one) and I'm not sure how you could make it better. Maybe everyone that wants to vote can sign up ahead with a code and then each registered person can vote once. That may be too complicated for some though...

As for talent vs popularity and teens voting. It's these teenagers that are going to be out there buying the CD's. If you listen to a lot of today's music (I sure try not to...although it's getting a bit better), is it really about talent? It's about looks and image.... combine that with the electronic voice enhancing tools they have today and you have Brittany Spears on the charts.

I said in another thread (keeping in mind I don't know a lot about AI), it doesn't seem like last season was problem free either. Isn't the guy that won being outdone by the guy that was runner up. This Clay guy is everywhere. He seems to be doing much better than the winner?

Jess

They wouldn't get as many votes because people are more passionate to keep their contestant in than boot others off. This is all about ratings and popularity. Again, it is entertainment and last night was VERY entertaining!

LOL! That's for sure!

As far as the voting goes they aren't going to change it for a number of reasons-

1- Families don't all agree on who to vote for.
2- People who own cell phones etc...would have an advantage, this way everyone's equal.

And the most important reason they'll never change the system-

They won't be able to say we got over 20 MILLION votes last night! ;)
