Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I have yet to post on this board and I know someone is bound to disagree with me but.....I cannot STAND Jennifer Hudson.
There is nothing melodic or flowy with the way she sings. It is hard to put into words but she is much to annoying with her mannerisims and "singing".

Fantasia also bothers me. While she is a awsome singer, her attitude stinks. Plus, I have no doubts that if she gets booted, there will be plenty of scouts there to scoop her up.

Last night was really lame, I guess I just don't get Barry Manalow. I liked JS's preformance but I agree, he should go next.

As far as tonight.... I WAS struck by the fact that there WERE back up vocals in her performance...did anyone else notice that? what's up with that? I don't know that I have ever noticed that anyone else having back up vocals in their performances?

There have been back up vocals all along. Sometimes they are louder than the performer and really annoying.

I thought Jasmine sounded really great last night. Although I didn't like her outfit, the skirt looked look a pink ballet tutu!

I also liked Jennifer Hudson, she really hit a lot of difficult notes.

George sounded like he was coming down with a cold.

Barry Manilow seemed a lot more humble than I expected him to be. Ever hear the" I write the songs", song?

I bet John Stevens will be next to go. He seems so timid and shy, poor thing. :D

I think it is unfair for everyone to want George to go after one bad night..... he did sound like he had a cold or a frog in his throat.... but there are definitely others who have performed more consistently badly and should be going before George!!

I disagree. This isn't just one bad night. He has sounded horrible and like he has a frog in his throat from day 1! There's a reason he didn't originally make the top 32, and it's because he is not good enough. I was embarassed for him in his group of 8 because I thought he sounded terrible, and thought why out of all these people, did they choose him as a replacement? Unfortunately, he made his way in because of Simon (same person who chose Carmen last year:rolleyes: ). Hopefully people realize now that he is not American Idol material!

...FINALLY, "Red" is gettin' the boot.....he can't POSSIBLY stay after last night!!

(This series IS a "Battle of the Divas"!!)

If you voted last night, did any of your get busy signals? Last night was the first time this season we have voted. DD voted several times for Diana and never got a busy signal. It seemed like last season we got busy signals a lot.

Now MAD, leave the redhead alone. I tend to think of John as the little mascot. We all love him. However, he doesn't have the talent of some of the others. Just watch, he will still be standing tonight!!

I have yet to get a busy signal this year when I have voted.

I agree with the poster who was "put off" by the exploitation of Fantasia's miracle. I do not agree with bringing the kids on stage, as it seems like a way to try to win votes to me.

I missed the first part of the show before Diana sang. Did they say why Paula had her arm in a sling?

And did you notice where Barry sat? Most of the guest judges have sat between Paula and Simon but he sat between Paula and Randy.

Paula's sling from last night:

From the ET site:

PAULA ABDUL, our special correspondent and "Idol" judge, showed up to "Idol" still wearing the sling she had on ET earlier the same day. At that time, she told us she had to have emergency surgery on her finger, which became infected following a faulty manicure. But she declared she still had what it takes to get the job done. "It is very uncomfortable," she shared, "but it won't keep me from putting Simon in his place tonight."

Beware of the evil manicures!!:smooth:

Next week (4/27/04):

Next week the Idols will provide a little Latin flavor for guest judge GLORIA ESTEFAN backed by her band the MIAMI SOUND MACHINE.

Awsome! I love Gloria! Can't wait!!!

I cant believe that Diana and John are still in this and Amy got booted off before either of them, it must have been the pink hair that put everyone off.

I only voted for John and I actually got quite a few busy signals. In the first hour or so, almsot every other call seemed to be a busy signal.

My kids were voting the whole 2 hours last night and we got alot of busy signals. For John we were getting busy signals right up till the ending time. they did get through a few times.
They also were voting for Jasmine...she also had busy signals.

My youngest thought she accidently dialed Fanatasia's number and hung up real fast.

And i agree with Tess...I don't care who wins because no one floats my boat either.

What I dont get about last night's show is that at the beginning they said Barry Manillow helped arrange the songs to fit each perfomer's style. Then when the judges critized George they said they didnt like the arrangement of the song-it was too fast.
I dont think George was to blame for that-that's Barry's fault.

I wish they would have kept all the songs last night in their original styles.
I really didnt need to hear a gospel rendition of Miracle by Fantasia (yeah yeah yeah).
I thought it was totally unfair for Ryan to bring her kid out on stage. Should we all vote for her because she is a mother??

Yeah, its like they are really pushing Fantasia (by bringing out her daughter). I was surprised they switched to showing her family sitting in the green room during her performance.

But then again they always liked to show JPL's dad dancing in the audience so who knows.

I was totally looking forward to Barry Manilow night, and ended up very disappointed. They took such great songs and WRECKED them. Say what you will about the young ones, but IMHO, Diana, Jasmine and John did the best renditions of Barry's songs.

And yes, I'm clueless as to WHY a musical genius like Barry Manilow would take his own songs and hack them up so bad - or maybe that's the only way these kids could sing them.

*Ahem* Barry Manilow did NOT write "I Write the Songs" - Bruce Johnston (of the Beach Boys) did. And it's not a song about BARRY writing the songs...it's a song about the "spirit of music" writing the songs...at least that's the way it's been explained.

If you'd ever seen Barry Manilow in concert, or in an interview even, you'd know that he is rather humble for someone who's been around for 30 years.

*jumping off my Manilow soapbox* ;)

I was happy with most of the performances tonight - George was the only disappointment. He sounded WORLDS better during the rehearsal segment - why'd he change the way he was singing the song for the performance?? I like him, too...he just tried to do too many vocal acrobatics, and the arrangement left him behind.

I was disappointed when I heard John would be doing Mandy. I thought he'd massacre it, and was pleasantly surprised with the first half, but he lost it midway. Perfect song for him would have been "I Was a Fool" - too bad nobody thought of it...

I was with Fantasia, thought she went a little over the top, and then Ryan brought out her daughter and I was crying "FOUL!! No fair with the baby intervention!!"

On to tonight - Barry and the contestants will sing "Let Freedom Ring" - kind of like a "One Voice" song with a choir when Barry does it in concert. Should be great!!! :)

I hope Diana doesn't leave, but unfortunately I fear it will be her to go tonight. John must have a very large teenage fan base, because he seems to glide by. I just love George and hope he goes all the way. He just lights up a room!

I think the bottom 3 will be George, Diana and Jasmine, and Diana will leave :sad1: Sad, because she's a real sweetheart.

My bottom three is John, George and Diana. Diana seemed off to me and George didn't have it either. I feel like John is way out of his league right now.

LaToya winning is looking more and more likely IMO even though I'm hoping that Jasmine is coming back now. LaToya sings real well but seems a bit too cautious to me.
