My husband and I were discussing this tonight over dinner. Wanted to get opinions. When we ride PotC we are always intrigued by the wench selling scene. It depicts a rather large wench being sold off and the banter is (in this day and age) totally not PC. Saying things like "are you selling her by the pound?" Definitely not sensitive material. If it were a new ride I'm sure there would be protests.

How do you all feel about this portion of the ride. Being a person of average weight I don't think much of it and it gives me a chuckle. I just wonder how it has affected some of you. Would you change it?

I personally feel like this nation has gone waaaay overboard on the PC thing. I get kind of tired of everything having to change, more restrictions in place, everything being regulated constantly, all because one person or small group got its feelings hurt. I have been offended by several things in my life. If something offends me, then I have the choice not to patronize that establishment. People don't take that route anymore. Everything has to be a battle. Just my two cents. I think if someone can't take it as the silliness it was intended for then they just shouldn't ride the ride. I've never heard of the Disney company purposefully trying to demean a sect of people and I don't think that's what they're doing here.

I'd actually heard that they had redone that very ride for the exact reason you mentioned. In another scene it showed pirates chasing young, thin wenches around and a larger, older one chasing the pirate around. People complained so they turned it into her chasing him with a broom.

This country... heck, the world has gotten way to PC and easily offended. Some people will be offended by anything. It is getting to the point that someone will most likely be offended by my post. I think some people look for things to get upset about because their lives just are not complete otherwise.

It 'is' a large part of the 'theme' of POC so no, it definitely does not offend me. I agree with pp's - people are too easily offended these days, and, of course, the law is on their side 'egging' them on (for the most part), so they like attention and 'scream' louder! :rolleyes1

I agree. People are a little touchy. I love PotC just wondered if anyone else thought "wow someone isn't gonna like this part very much!"

I haven't thought of that really, because PotC is just themed and set in the pirate world so well, I have the willing suspension of disbelief. However, I recently watched Peter Pan. The old cartoon movie. Wow - that movie would never be made like that today. "What makes the Red man red?" And "squaw get the firewood"

Honestly, the concept of selling women into what would essentially be sex slavery is way more offensive than the weight issue.

It would only be offensive if it was a modern day scene. It's NOT. It's a caricature of the 1700s. And...they're not REAL. How can some pieces of wood and some wires offend me? Folks really need to stop excavating for things to find offensive.

I feel the same as most others who have posted. I feel like maybe people have nothing better to do these days than to scream that something is not PC. Lol Just my opinion though.

I also agree we're way to PC these days and people need to just mind their own business.

I find lots of comedians, TV shows, and movies offensive, rather than complaining and trying to censor them I just don't watch them.

If you really want to get into the PC ness of this, OP said she's averaged sized and it made her laugh, but thinks other people might see if differently. So does that mean only average or skinny people can laugh at that joke? Was the joke only meant for them? Was it even necessary to bring OP's size into it in the first place?

Yeah, PC is a bit ridiculous at times.

I love these scenes - History and the opportunity to talk about real life for the time this ride is based on gives real perspective on our times and the different cultures around the world.

Exactly! To portray those times, whitewashed with today's standards, would actually downplay the advances that have been made. Now THAT would be offensive.

I'm still upset that "The Song of the South" isn't available for purchase anywhere, but Disney keeps Tom Sawyer's Island with "Injun Joe's Cave". If "Song" is too "offensive" to sell, why have a ride based on it?

If someone looks hard enough, they'll find reasons to be upset about something. People of other skin colors upset that Carousel of Progress is about a white family. Great Movie Ride only has scenes from movies featuring white people. You get the idea.

Agree! :thumbsup2

The parks will NEVER be PC. Many of the rides are old fashioned and even more are based on older times. There is no reason to get offended over something silly like a ride at Disney world.

Have you listened to the words of "yo oh, yo oh, a pirates life for me?". Pretty nasty actually, but I love POTC and everything about it. No way should it change.

I'm definitely in the America is on PC overload camp.

As an aside - my kids love Peter Pan (the movie) right now and so we watch it multiple times a week. So much "un PC" stuff In that movie with the natives.....and In Pinocchio, Pinocchio is smoking. You cannot judge movies from the 50s (or whenever they were made in a different generation) by today's standards.

Exactly. I hate the trend of cleaning up history to make it PC for current times.
