I'm mystified as to how you could have gotten so lost. It was super easy to get from Windsor Hills to WDW, although I will admit, I got confused trying to find the
AAA parking at AK, and had to circle around and back. That's as lost as I got. Did you not take the sneak route (Sherberth Road)? It's also possible to rent car seats--that's what we did, a regular car seat as well as a booster.
My DH is horrible about getting turned around, and then doesn't want to cause an accident by suddenly turning, slowing down to really read the signs, etc. The night he tried to drive the 3 miles to Target he almost ended up in Tampa on I-4!!! Apparently the main road toward WH wasn't marked from that direction, so he missed it. And we didn't know about Sherberth Road. No one told us there was a faster way to the parks. That stinks, b/c it sure would've helped!
Also, my boys are in Britax Frontiers (high-back, 5 point boosters) and a Britax Boulevard. We aren't comfortable with regular booster seats, so we chose to bring our own seats that we knew our boys would be pretty safe in. Next time we'll just use the ME busses that we saw as we were hauling the big plat full of luggage and car seats to our rental car.
Well, if you didn't know about the sneak route, I can totally see how you could get lost and confused! I absolutely HATED driving along I-4 any more than I had to.
Just FTR, for you or anyone else who might consider staying at Windsor Hills:
Turn left onto 192 from Old Lake Wilson Road. Be in the right-hand left turn lane. At the next light, take a right--that's Sherberth Road. Follow it a mile or so to the next light--if you go left, it's AKL. Turn right, and it's everything else.
We found the easiest way to get back to Windsor Hills from anywhere in WDW was to follow the "Animal Kingdom" signs. Obviously, we wouldn't turn into the AK parking lot, just head on past and to the light where we would pick up Sherberth Road again. This might not have been the shortest route, but totally worth the lower blood pressure, versus the 4-lane madness that is the main exits.
But, hey--I'm not trying to talk you out of staying onsite next time, if you really want to. We used to only stay onsite, until we tried a house rental. Now, my family will ONLY stay in a house with a private pool. Mine are DD16, DS14, DD8, and DS6-on-Sunday. They all have things that are important to them that we go on vacation. Also, they hate eating out

and value relaxation time.
