So weird for me, but I've been "off" Disney and the DIS this past week. I haven't even listened to last week's Discussion or Email shows yet. :scared1:

Last Monday after a week of just not feeling good, my dad went to the doctor, he'd been tired and just not himself and Sunday was having somewhat of a hard time breathing. The doctor did a chest x-ray that showed a large mass on his right lung. They admitted him to the hospital that day for tests, they did a couple tests and then seemed to just dwadle around while he was getting worse. I swear he aged 10 years in 2 days. They finally decided they wanted to do a new lung surgery, but had to move him to another hospital to do it (they didn't do the surgery at the the smaller hospital he was in) more dwadling around and waiting while my dad was having a harder and harder time breathing. Finally my sister, who is a nurse at a big hospital in Cleveland said "Enough" and rounded up a surgeon and a bed at her hospital and BOY was the other hospital mad, don't know why they cared, but I had to really step in, put my foot down and insist they transport him NOW....they actually tried to talk my mom out of this, saying the ambulance transport might cost $1,200. Don't care I said, we are moving him out of here. Finally get him transported, he has the 4 hour surgery, where it is discovered he was bleeding internally because the 1st hospital nicked a vein when they inserted a needle into his back to drain some fluid from his lungs and a terrible infection that filled his lung with puss. We were told he probably wouldn't have made it to morning if they hadn't done the surgery when they did. :sad1: The whole experience has been scary and exhausting, but tonight my dad was finally moved out of the surgical ICU and into a regular room and is doing much better! He isn't out of the woods yet, but our worst fear (the large mass on the xray) seems to have just been from the infection and he is breathing on his own now and getting massive antibiotics that seem to be fighting the infection. I don't even want to think about what might have happened though if we hadn't been aggresive and insisted on moving him.

Anyway, it's nice to be able to relax a bit and enjoy the boards tonight....
I'd popped in a couple times for a distraction, but for the first time, couldn't concentrate on Disney and my happy place.

So, I have I missed anything good? (Aside from the gun thing) I'm curious to find out about Pete's holiday rituals or whatever that's all about.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to listen to last week's shows tomorrow.

Thanks for listening. :goodvibes

So glad your dad seems to be doing better. You are so right to be agressive in dealing with any doctor/patient issues. I hope things continue to improve for your dad.

What a nightmare!!! I am just thankful that your father is doing better. You really have to trust your instincts when a loved one is ill and not care who you offend. And thank goodness for having a medical person in the family - it comes in handy.

My dad had knee replacement surgery last year and they gave him the blood thinner before the surgery instead of afterwards. Thank God my Dad is a doctor and wasn't drugged up too much and he was able to say something to the surgeon as they were prepping him or he would have bleed to death on the table.

Just makes you thankful for your loved ones.

This is the absolute truth!!! I know in my heart things would have turned out very differently if my sister wasn't a nurse.

I am glad to hear your Dad is improving. It's a shame that you have to fight for family members in the hospital these days.

oh my goodness! I'm glad your dad is okay... how scary for you and your family!

A good friend of mine had a similar thing happen where a nurse didn't do her job right (can't remember the specifics) and her mother almost bled to death internally but thankfully her mother was okay... the same nurse came over and was trying to help her mother later on and my friend and her father were like "Ummmm... we don't want that nurse anywhere near my mom!" .. and rightfully so!

So many times people just think "well, they are the doctors, they know what they are doing".. but we all need to be more responsible for our own health and speak up sometimes!!! I'm not saying all doctors are bad.. just that we have the right to know what's going on and to say "I dont' want that procedure" or "I DO want this done".

So glad to hear your dad's doing better, what a terrible ordeal. I lost interest in the boards after Bawb passed and during some personal issues as well but when I did come back the support and friendship from our on-line family is truly amazing.
We'll keep your family in our prayers.

How frightening, and how wonderful you advocated for your father and got the proper response. It really does help to have medically-savvy people in the family. Nurses are so overburdened these days that they can't possibly keep up the highest standard of care in many hospitals...and doctors are only human, and make mistakes, too. Question everything.

How awful for you to be forced into moving your dad to another hospital because of another's disregard for the patient and his family... shame on them!

I'm so glad to hear your dad's doing better, and I wish him a speedy recovery. :)

Welcome back! :wizard:

Sorry to hear about your Dad, but I'm glad that he is doing better. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Will be keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.

:grouphug:

So happy to hear that your Dad is doing better!

Hang in there...I have my weeks too...

Oh my goodness!! What a nightmare. I hope that your Dad is able to fully recover from this terrible ordeal. :grouphug:

Goodness! How scary!! I'm so glad that your dad is on the road to recovery and hope he is up to 110% soon.

I work at a big hospital and we see this all the time from smaller community hospitals. It is very scary. (((HUG))) I hope he is on the mend. Welcome back to the boards.

Lisa -- What a horrible week you had!!! I hope things continue to improve for your dad and that he's back on his feet soon. Any hospital stay is very stressful...but to go through that, how awful.

Thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate the thoughts and prayers.

You are a big hospital girl like my sister. She said the same thing. My dad was in the smaller hospital before, he had his gall bladder out and they were great, but I guess for something like this, it's just better to go big.

The thing that is made me mad was they gave us such a hard time about moving him. The floor doctor at the first hospital was mad. After he talked to my sister, he just walked out of the my dad's room, he didn't say anything to my mom and me, didn't even look at us and we never saw him again. Then they kept trying to feed my dad, I had to keep telling them no because he was going to have surgery that day. Then his nurse tried really hard to talk us out of moving him, she told us he really wasn't that bad, said he was stable and his situation wasn't emergent, :headache: seriously, all you had to do was look at him struggling to take in a breath to know he was not doing good...when that didn't work she came in saying the ambulance transport would cost around $1,200 and I don't know where she got that from, turns out it's going to be about $500. Did she even call to check? Or was she just trying to "scare" us?

I'm know I can't dwell on any of that now though...I really have nothing but respect for nurses and doctors, and still do, plus I know my energies are better spent concentrating on my dad getting better.

Sorry to hear about your dad but I’m glad it worked out in the end. I’m in the Cleveland area, which hospital should I be keeping my family out of?

Based on the experience and what I know about the hospitals around here I would guess the small hospital might be in Westlake.

I'm glad your Dad is on on the mend. Goes to show, you know yourself and your family best. The nurses and docs only get a small glimpse of them. Always go with your gut!
Hugs

Gives me chills how the other hospitals really screwed up. I wonder how often this happens with all hospitals. So glad that he's on the mend!!!!!

What a frightful expereince!
