What percentage of DVC Members loose points rather than “renting” them? Better yet, what does Disney do with the points (days) not used, rent them? If so, how do those dollars get returned into the property for “wear and tear”, or don’t they?

Points rooms that are not rented at the 60 day point can be released to CRO for rental by non-members. The profit from these rooms are returned to the members as a dues credit. It's in the budget as "breakage income".

We never lose any points since we are always in a state of constant borrowing. ::MickeyMo

We really need more points, but until then, always a borrower be.

We always remember to use, and bank so we never have to rent out or lose points.

From this board I'd suspect very little points are lost but overall, I'd guess it's between 3-5%, maybe even a little more.

We will loose one next year - an unusual circumstance due to trying to get three years of points together for a family trip with a normal every other year schedule. Can't bank it - as we won't travel the next year. One isn't worth transferring. So its gone into the Disney breakage fund. Enjoy your dues discount - its on me..... :D

I have a friend who has been going through a very messy divorce and did lose many points - the family hasn't been to disney in a couple of years, the husband always did the recordkeeping and the wife got the dvc in the divorce and knows nothing about banking - i'm sure they lost a couple of hundred points.

I agree with Dean that people on these boards lose very few points and are savvy consumers of them. I recall reading, however, that quite a number of Dis-ers have acquaintances who routinely let points slide due to ignorance or a laissez-faire attitude. I wonder if system wide--especially as we're apparently approaching 90,000 members?--isn't much higher than 5%?

I would have thought it would be broken down in the annual report somewhere... Surely it could be tracked beyond "breakage"....

Maybe DVD would rather that members not know exactly?

We lost 13 one year. I donated them for use in a charity auction and the winner never contacted me to make the reservation for them, despite a couple of follow-ups on my part.

I would agree, those on this board probably dont lose much more than a percent or two, if that, but overall, with so many members, the rules on 100% banking, emergencies that arise, and people just not knowing the rules or caring for that matter I bet the numbers are higher.

One missed banking deadline could result in quite a bit of points being lost

Another who agrees with Dean on this point. We would not lose points unless we made a major error -- what I suspect is true for most of us on the DIS.

Are there any industry wide statistics on non-use of timeshares. Or better yet statistics for the better programs that are well run.
