Oddball things that are strangely expensive now

I just bought a small packet of Knox gelatin for $3.69. It was replacing a box of 4 or 5 packets that according to the paper price tag I paid $3.99 about 10 years ago. Should of bought futures in cattle.

I swear that at this point I plan grocery shopping more strategically than a war campaign. It takes some time, but we do see some significant savings.
It has become absurdly expensive to feed a family properly and there is so much junk out there, like literally terrible things I wouldn't feed a pet are being marketed to kids :(

Frozen fruit and veggies are still an acceptably priced way to manage nutrition, pasta is ok and bread can be found. The protein side of things is tricky though especially for people with kids, eggs is best and there is still tuna but it is getting $. I find myself worrying about children and adolescents a lot lately, the imbalances can have serious consequences and our GOV doesn't seem to be taking the bull by the horns with guidance on how to cope with budgeting nutritious meals when money is tight.... of course they would have to ADMIT money is tight first 🙄

Oatmeal is a staple, barley soup, lentils in salads and as soup, any sort of pasta with some veggies and some salad dressing is usually tasty, frozen spinach with almost any savory dip is delicious treat with any sort of chip.

I agree with whoever posted about soft drink prices. I checked while at Safeway today and Coke and Pepsi brands were $7.99 for 12 pack cans regular price. I haven’t purchased 12 packs in years buy my limit was $3.00 or at the most 3 for $10.

I mostly buy 6 pack plastic bottles now and they have Canada Dry brands for a locked-in price of $3.99. It ran from mid July until August 15. Otherwise they’re $7.79.

I don't drink soda but I looked while at Target today, those prices are bananas & so are any kind of snacking chips.

everything honestly. I remember getting a 24 pack of soda for like 6.98. Now it's that much for a 12 pack if you can't find it on sale.

just the other day i saw 18 packs for the first time-they are running the (lately) price the 24 packs go for. shrinkflation????
A pack of Tillamook medium cheddar 12 oz sliced cheese was almost $6 yesterday.

if you sign up for notifications on their website you occasionaly get coupons for a free product. the stuff they DO sell on their website is not badly priced-their AWSOME smoked cheddar (2 pound block) goes for $15 (makes spectacular mac & cheese).

Oatmeal prices have gone cuckoo. There used to be deep sales frequently where I could buy the big can for a couple dollars. Now it’s like $8-10 and storebrand not much better. I finally brokedown and paid non-sale price after 4 trips. I’m stubborn but guess not stubborn enough 😂

There’s definitely some items that I wonder who is paying that price regularly. Like those dried apple slices - 2oz for $10!!! That’s $80 a pound. Surely someone is taking the… (insert UK slang).

Name-brand cereal! OMG.
Yes!!!! I stopped buying for the reason. Thankfully Kroger was having a mass e sale on GM cereal. $1.99, yes!!!!! I bought 5 boxes. Sadly they’ve become so slim a week later I’m down to two. I try to stay with name brand cereal. Oatmeal which is also more expensive these days, I will buy store brand if noticeably cheaper.
I have sound this to be true with cheese. I usually get the Kroger cheese because it's pretty good and cheaper, but recently I'll find that Sargento will have a "two for X" and it works out cheaper than Kroger brand by a good bit.
Costco shredded 2 pack of cheese shot up in price too. I stated buy shredded and sliced cheese at Aldi because it’s cheaper.

Greeting cards!

No way am I paying $7 for a Hallmark card! I don’t use them much anymore anyway.

If I do buy them I get them at discount stores.

Yes! They are outrageous and the odd thing is if cards were cheaper people would send more and the post office would be more profitable so out of all the things to get subsidies and support, really greeting cards should be in the top.

Aldi actually has a nice selection of cheese too!

Ground beef and ketchup.

Our stores routinely put steak on sale and it’s very often the same price as ground beef. We have definitely increased our steak consumption!

Ketchup is out of hand. Five dollars for a bottle of the stuff is not something I thought I would ever see.

all beef prices are outrageous BUT i have (for years) purchased sale roasts and other cuts of beef to grind into ground beef when it's price is higher. you end up paying less and get the lowest fat content. before we bought a kitchenaide grinder attachment i would have the butcher at the grocery store make ground beef out of a roast (and if i did'nt want to put in the time-cut roasts into soup/stew meat, london broils into stroganoff and fajita strips).

you can get hunts 14 oz. at dollar tree for $1.25 (their generic brand at 24 oz). i get it, bulls eye bbq sauce and a1 there b/c while the bottles tend to be smaller the per unit price is MUCH lower.

They’re sister companies, so some of the same items and pricing structures.
It’s that way for me, too, but I go maybe once a month and stock up. Worth the drive, or if you’re in the neighborhood.
Common misperception but they are not connected. Trader Joe's is owned by Aldi Nord, and Aldi US is owned by Aldi Sud. They split close to sixty years ago and while both retain the original model of no-frills, store-brand driven products they are not connected.

We are WDW PLANNERS. We have been through the most brutal planning challenges - particularly those of us who have planned disney trips in the '90s, 00s and beyond, from fast pass to fast pass + to Genie. Grocery stores do not know who they are dealing with.:rotfl:

I don't think this is an oddball thing but my neighbor just had some exterior house work done. Homes in my neighborhood are brick/stone, stucco, aluminum siding, and/or shaker shingles (different combinations. My neighbor's house is mostly aluminum siding and stone and the shaker singles are mostly an accent, I'd guess 20%-25% of his house. He recently had to repair SOME of the shaker shingles. Not all. It cost $30k.

First-run movie theatres. :scared1: We've got every streaming service known to man, and a really nice second-run discount movie house close to us, so it's really not very often that we see a new release movie at the Cineplex. It was hella hot here a few weeks ago so one evening we thought we'd treat ourselves to the A/C while seeing Twisters. Two general admissions, one senior admission, one large popcorn, two fountain drinks, two boxes of candy and a bottle of water = $101.00 including tax. :faint:
