Odd question... how does a hat help keep you cool?

Seems to me, it would trap heat in and make your head hotter??

We are headed down to WDW for our first summer trip and trying to find ways to beat the heat.

hats block the sun from your eyes :) stick some water bottles in the freezer before you come, then carry them around with you. keeps you cool, keeps your drink cool.

I thought that is what sunglasses were for...

We will have frozen bottles of water, and spray bottles etc...

I was mostly wondering if a hat helps keeps you cool, and the science behind it :lmao:

Insulation works both ways. ;)

A hat keeps the sun off your head, reducing the tempurature on your head. In the summer I typically wear two t-shirts when outside, seems backwards but that same layer of trapped air that keeps you warm in the winter can also keep you cool in the summer.

What a hat will do is give your head protection from the sun. Some years ago I had a skin cancer removed from on top of my head. I'm a female with a full head of hair and whilst I'm mindful about applying sunscreen to my exposed skin it never occured to me to protect my scalp as well.

I HAVE to wear a hat when we go (August). It keeps the sun from baking my head, and shelds my eyes from the way-too bright Florida sun. Even if I'm wearing sunglasses, the sun seems bright!

soak a small towel or washcloth in water and put it around your neck. Other wise, trying to explain the concepts of thermodynamics is not easy to do with out a white board and having taken all the math classes that are offered.

If you like wearing a hat, wear a hat. If you don't don't.

I have liked wearing a visor for the Florida summers. The visor keeps more sun from your eyes. It has been so bright that I have forgotten that I had sunglasses on and not my regular glasses. The visor makes a big difference!

Yes I have to wear a visor at Disney. my glasses turn to sunglasses but
it is not enough.
The visor shields your eyes.

I used to wonder the same thing. I could never understand why people wore hats when we ran. Then I got a running hat and now I love it. I like that it keeps the sun out of my eyes but it is also made from the drywick material so it's supposed to keep the sweat out and the cool in. They're so lightweight they don't make your head too hot.

We don't wear hats. What did make me cooler is riding Splash Mountain over and over.

:happytv: ever see movies of desert nomads, they always have thier head covered, hat shades the head as well as the eyes :cool2:

Plus they're stylish. Get the most god awfully loud one you can find and stick pins all over it. ;)

I like the big floppy fishing hats. I got a really nice one from Epcot in 2006. Sure it looks rather silly, especially since a have a big 'ol melon for a head, but I like it. :lmao:

I plan on wearing my hat at the world to help ward off sunburn. When I burn, I get extra crispy. The hat at least keeps the sun out of my face and hopefully keeps my ears from burning. It's also easier to throw on a hat than it is to worry about how bad my hair looks.

It's also an LSU hat so I can proudly show everyone where I'm from and what team I love.

If I don't wear my hat, I get a headache from the sun. I wear a cowboy like styled sunhat, and it keeps me really cool.

Always wear a fabulous hat - keeps the sun off your head which will diminish heat headaches, your new color job won't turn funky colors, and wearing a hat will help keep the hood on your head when wearing the ever-so-fashionable ponchos during the afternoon "rain breaks" and the visor will keep the rain from smacking you upside the puss.

I think that the protection from sunburn might be more important than any help it gives to keeping cool. I bought Disney baseball caps for the whole family for our upcoming trip in August, because I don't want to deal with anyone having sunburn on their head (especially me, and I burn pretty easily).

I got a hat with a nice, wide brim that goes all the way around. It has a nice cord that adjusts that helps it stay on my head. This way the sun is off my face, my neck, my head. It really does help to keep you cooler. When I go into a shop, I usually take it off, so the a/c cools my head off a bit.
Nope, I just don't go to WDW without my hat.
