Odd Question for Lefties...

My eldest son is a leftie too, but with all sports he's a righty. About 10% of the population is a lefty.

Yes, I remember him telling me about writing -- he gets his left hand all smudge up from writing.

I don't know about the scissors thing with him.

I don't remembering having a difficult time teaching him to tie his shoes.

DS, 12, is a lefty.

He still cuts with his right hand, because scissors are just not molded to left hands.

He was horrible in Little League baseball, until we told his coach, "You know, he is left-handed . . ." (Son was 6 and didn't know any better; he was just trying to bat like everyone else). Coach then taught him how to bat left-handed, and he got a lot better!!

He is starting guitar lessons, and his guitar teacher is trying to teach him right handed - he says it is better if he can learn to play that way.

And make sure he sits at the end of the dining table - otherwise, he will be elbowing the person sitting next to him all night.

Back in the olden days in high school we had those desks that are kinda like a table, where to sit from the left side and the arm rest thing on under your right arm....

I never knew those were righty desks, not until I went back to my old high school for the school's 75th anniversary (last year) and they had these desks were you sit from the right side and the arm rest in under the LEFT ARM.

I sat in that desk for about 10 minutes and it was heaven. There are so many right handed tools out there that us lefty don't even realize.

As a left-hander I feel like I should chime in - although most everything has been covered -

left handed scissors - ugh.

And at least with stage combat sword work (and fencing) I gave in and learned right handed because the teachers gave me such crap about learning leftie - plus all of the choreography had to be switched up.

lots of lefties here I'm lefty, so is my mom, my sister, my ds6...

my dh use to get a little aggrevated and try to make ds write w/his right hand and I made him write w/both and let him compare he gave up and agreed that left was definitely 100% better He will practice both w/t-ball etc. to see what is most comfortable to him, but he usually sticks w/left.

I have a scissor phobia also (darn things ruined my shot at being a starving artist).....ink smudges on hands.....yup......spiral notebooks? Not gonna do it.

Going to bat as a lefty and knocking the ball into the gap in right field? Priceless.

We are only around 10% of the population. It is good to be different.

Both DH and I are lefties-- but neither one of our kids are!

The paper may tilt a bit but that's ok.

Scissors are and still continue to be a pain in the rear... I only have a few scissors that I really like

Hot mugs are a bit odd-- like for coffee, hot cocoa.

Erasable ink or mechanical pencils are pain as well... you will wind up with ink on your hand/arm.

As a (soon to be) teacher, I find that chalkboards are a pain in the rear as well. I do better with clasroom whiteboards.

Handwriting--well, I have taught many handwriting lessons with my left hand. It messes some of the kids up. In some instances I have written with my left hand and had another student demonstrate it with the right hand. Or I attempt it with my right hand and it of course looks wrong... then I use that as a teachable moment. What is wrong with this letter? Is is crooked, off center, open L closed L, etc.. that strategy works as well. If a student sees a poor example I challenge them to do it better. (It usually turns into I bet NO ONE can write a letter neater than this-- of course they all can, and they out do each other trying to do it correctly)

Here's a weird fact for sports and lefties:

It is almost impossible to play polo left handed. DH was on a polo team and had a hard time since he was left handed.

Just a weird sports tidbit for anyone out there.

I have two lefty sons of two righty parents, talk about confusing.

DS10 has been predominantly left his whole life, in fact teachers commented on how left he was at such a young age. He writes left and throws left but bats right and golfs right. His handwriting is actually really nice, a retired nun at his school helped him . He had the hardest time learning to tie his shoes. I bought him abook and that helped but he still doesnt tie them tight enough. He is FOREVER getting pen, marker and pencil marks all over him and his clothing (if anyone has a suggestion for getting those stains out of cuffs of school uniforms would love to hear it, yes I have tried bleach). Anyway the thing that cracks me up is that you all keep saying these lefties are creative, DS10 does not have a creative bone in his body, he is facts man! His art work struggles big time, his cutting looks awful and when he draws something freehand I have to ask what it is, that is not good in 4th grade.
Now DS4 has a condition called hypotnia or low muscle tone in his trunk and this has affected both gross and fine motor skills so for the longest time he would not pick a hand, it was hard on the OT that works with him to work on things when his brain couldnt decide. Well over the summer it seems he has become a lefty too and now that we have a hand dominance he is progressing in so many areas.

DD (Stitchfansjr) is a lefty. Not sure if it has anything to do with it but man is her penmenship scarey. Thank goodness she taught herself to type and she is speedy.

Got it. I understand now. When people say creative, I automatcially go to actual art. But the fact that I am a pretty darn good choreographer and can make up a dance on my way into work, that would be considered creative too.

ok then DS can be included in your creative group, I tell you he is facts man, he remebers the tiniest detail of things no one else notices, and if it is sports related, ie baseball stats etc, then he is all over that.

When I think creative, I think of the arts, whether it is drawing or writing or acting or dance.

okay we'll call him detail orientated not creative.....personally I think they are often the same thing...because artists notice the details...whether you are off by a beat, the difference between a teal and sky blue, or when a comma is needed instead of a period.

I'd want your son putting together my fantasy football team....those are #'s I just don't get.

He is very detailed oriented. We will be driving along and he will comment on stores that are no longer there, or if a store changes their sign ever so slightly, things like that too.

My husband, my son and I are all lefties. I knit and crochet right handed (though I haven't done it in years) and DH and DS play guitar using a guitar strung for a right handed person. They both claim that having your dominent hand creating chords makes more sense than strumming.

We all use the mouse with our right hands and I dial a cell phone with my right hand. Don't know why.....I just do.

I've never even seen a pair of left handed scissors.

Baseball: Try finding a left handed catchers mitt

When DS10 started playing baseball 4 years ago, the league ordered a lefty's catcher mitt for him to use. He now has his own, since he loves to catch, but I think catcher is not a lefty position, so if he wants to go pro......

Yeah, not many lefty catcher mitts.

I still have my Rawlings "Boog Powell" 1st baseman glove. Got it when I was 9. I love that mitt. DS6 thinks it is the funniest looking mitt ever......he will learn.....

Lefty 1st baseman.....had the extra stretch and best positioning.

Okay, so this thread did remind me of a few things that I had forgotten about:

1) Learning to tie my shoes was rather difficult and I am fairly certain I learned by sitting across from the people showing me. I am 99% certain my dd is going to be a righty and I hadn't thought about how that might affect her if I teach her to tie her shoes. I may have to either sit across from her or have dh teach her. Hmmm...

2) Forgot about those stupid right-handed desks. Those desks are so unfair to lefties. I prefer a regular desk that doesn't cater to one side or the other. Thankfully we didn't have right-handed desks too often when I was in school, though it did happen occasionally.

3) Pen or pencil smears. Yep, that one is inevitable. Still happens to me from time to time but I have learned to control it a bit better now.

4) Learning sign language...my brother is deaf and we bought an ASL book years ago so we could teach ourselves some of the signs that he had not yet learned at school and in his speech and occupational therapy. I had a difficult time following the instructions and the pictures since the signing was geared toward using your right hand as your dominant signing hand. I do everything primarily with my right hand except write, draw, and SIGN! It took me really, really concentrating on learning the signs for some of them and others were not done properly until my mother stood across from me and I mirrored her movements that way. I can't believe I had forgotten about that one!

I will mention that I have a lot of lefties in my family and we also have a lot of artists and authors and things like that in the family. I actually started college on an art scholarship but it wasn't what I wanted to do. I am now majoring in a medical field. It's kind of ironic how drastically different my major is from the art one. I have changed a lot over the past 5-10 years though.
