We have been back over a month now, and I wrote these after we got back, but I was having posting problems...better late than never, right?
Saturday, 10/15:
breakfast: muffin on plane
comments: tasted like a flavored muffin (blueberry, banana), but without the flavor, like muffin batter flavor, I guess...complimentary on the flight, so whatever...
lunch: sandwiches from Albertsons
comments: I had a turkey, bacon & cheddar wrap, Keith had a turkey & cheese sub; standard pre-packaged supermarket type sandwiches, we were hungry, they were there...we also picked up provisions for the week, beer, wine, water, cheese, crackers, chex mix, fruit punch, cereal bars, shampoo, toothpaste, and buy of the trip...liquid hand soap - I HATE bar soap so this was very welcome to have in the room, and for the $2 I spent on it, well worth it - total at Albertson's $68.50 - I noticed this year the prices seem to be much higher than I remember them being in the past, but it is a very convenient location, and it can't be any worse than Gooding's, right?
dinner: Fulton's
comments: In the past, there have been many people who did not like Fulton's. Many even leaned towards hatred of this place. We have always loved going to Fulton's and have been there 5 times now. I would often defend Fulton's if people asked opinions of it. Can you see where this is going?
We arrived and had a bit of a wait, just enough to enjoy a drink in the lounge, which is very nice by the way. The USC vs. Notre Dame game was on, so there was good entertainment too. We were called to our table, which was upstairs and to the right at the top of the staircase. We had never sat in this room before, and found it to be nice, not quite as nice as the room to the left at the top of the stairs though. Our server came over and was very energetic and friendly. This soon changed, when he found out we would be splitting our entree. He then became non-existent. We started with the fried calamari appetizer. This is still the best calamari I've had, very tender, not greasy. We did have to ask for the tartar sauce that used to accompany it (don't ask, it just goes well - we've never had fried calamari with tartar sauce anywhere else other than here). We were also brought some sourdough bread and butter, and flatbreads and the crab boursin dip, which is yummy. We then split a caesar salad, which the kitchen split onto two plates. We had ordered this last year, and I remembered not being impressed by it, but Keith really wanted it so I agreed. Well, I was right. Really no flavor to the dressing, almost a watery taste to it. We then split the King Crab Claws which comes with steamed potatoes. We always order this and walk away delighted. Not so this time. Usually the meat just comes right out of the claws, which are pre-scored for you. We had to fight to get out the meat. Then, the deal killer, two of my claws smelled like ammonia. Eew. Not good. I wanted to say something, but none of the ones Keith had smelled like that, so he just wanted to keep eating. Whatever, enjoy, have a blast - they're all yours. We also had cocktails. He had gin and tonics, I started with a Citron and soda, then tried a pop rocks martini, a specialty drink of theirs. It was way too sweet, but I guess I should have figured that out, given the name, and the fact that they dump a bag of pop rocks into your drink, but hey, it was the first night of vacation, I was out for fun!
I then had another Citron and soda. I don't remember the total, but it was under $100, with the DVC discount, including tip, I believe. It was a very disappointing meal, and we will definitely not be returning for dinner, perhaps for drinks and the calamari in the lounge only.
That night we also had a drink at Raglan Road. Citron and soda for me, gin and tonic for him. In retrospect, we should have had beer, but we were continuing onto the Adventurer's Club (so we thought) and were going to be drinking Kungaloosh!, so we didn't want beer in the middle. We didn't get to eat here, but would like to get back to try the food. The atmosphere, however, seemed very commercial, and not very 'pub-ish'. As we were walking out, we heard a guy saying "This is Irish, Disney style". That pretty much summed it up. The place is huge, and it looks like all of it isn't even opened yet; there was an entire room to the right of the entrance that you could see through the window from outside that the room is just filled to the brim with boxes of stuff. For some reason, the atmosphere reminded me of a Denny's, with nicer decor and some bars. I don't know how else to explain it. That said, we do want to return to try the food, and see some entertainement.
Of course we got to the Adv. Club and it was closed for a private event until 9 PM (it was around 8 at the time) so we bagged it for another night. This always happens to us with the Adventurer's Club, we get there and it's closed for a private event and we don't want to stick around to wait for it to open...but I digress. So we changed gears and headed to Jellyrolls. Beer and popcorn, great music and about 300 of your closest friends (it was CROWDED!). This would become a trend for the week at any place after dark, with the Gartner Symposium in town...I'm a little embarrassed to say how much the bill came to, but let's just say that we had a really good time, and it's a good thing we were staying at the Boardwalk!
coming soon...day 2
