October 2014 Car Rentals.

Last May, we stayed at the Polynesian before we left to our off-property timeshare. My husband walked over the the Shades of Green Resort (8 minute walk form a connected walkway at the front of the Poly). We got a rental car (Camry) for 8 days for $65. The rates were significantly cheaper than the rates with he same rental companies at the Disney Transportation center. Its def worth looking into if staying nearby. We used National; became Emerald members and used a discount code on top of the discounted Emerald Member rate. All thanks to tip we've read on these threads.

wow

I'm at $258 for an economy for 10 days (10/3-12) with KLM code. Waiting for something else to come out!

National Emerald Club member, so booked a midsize on the Emerald Aisle.
October 11-16, 2014 (5 days, but did a dummy reservation and that price would hold for a full week rental), pick up and drop off at MCO.
Used the KLM code and a coupon from BJ's website for $30 off a weekly rental (we are members).
Total price is $159.13

NDA2324BR is $30 off a one-week rental, but you should go to the bjs.com website as there are a whole bunch of different coupon deals.

Here's a laugh! I just looked at my same reservation, only with picking up at the Dolphin and dropping off at MCO. Not only did the price go up to $300, but there's a $399 drop-off charge. Yeah, THAT's not happening!

I am a BJ's member and I went to their site and Costco's travel site. Costco was a lot less for me....pickup October 18 return November 1 Hertz for economy car was $399 including everything even second driver. I am not a Costco member so went to Hertz site and read their best price promise and it said they match any price (specifically Costco). It said just no auction site's like priceline. This seemed like a good price does anyone have any thoughts? What is Emerald Aisle? What is KLM code? Just went back and reread LeeBee'S post... so would that rental be $318 for 2 weeks for a midsize car? If so please tell me how to get to the Emerald Aisle!! Thank You!

Emerald Club is National's rental membership program. We joined for free… not sure if it's still free, but if it's not you can usually google "free emerald club membership" and find a link for a free sign-up. The way it works is this: National has what is called the "emerald aisle" for emerald club members. The smallest car on the aisle is mid-size, but they have all kinds of larger vehicles IME (most of the time, but don't hold me to this). If you do your reservation through the club, you reserve a mid-size car but can take any size car that is on the Emerald Aisle. We have ended up with minivans, SUVs, PT Cruisers, full sized cars, etc., all for the price of the mid-size car we reserved through the Emerald CLub.

If you are a club member, log into the emerald club site at National and enter your car info. You can enter a member ID (I find the KLM code is the best, but there are a whole bunch of codes out there) and up to three coupon codes. All KINDS of places have coupon codes; check the BJs website, VISA website, Sam's website, etc. You can get $X off a weekend or weekly rental, free days, etc. through coupons. If you go to mousesavers.com there will be a whole BUNCH of member IDs and coupon code links there. Just remember that SOME require membership in different loyalty programs, warehouse clubs, etc. I have NEVER had National ask for my membership card for any of these, but they could. The other caveat is if you REALLY need a vehicle that's bigger than a mid-size, you should reserve the bigger vehicle. It's one thing to put 4 or 5 people (and their luggage) in a mid-size, but if there are 7 of you, you'll never fit in a mid-size and you'll be taking a chance on the aisle. (I know people who do 2 reservations- one through EA and one for the size they really need, so if there's nothing that "works" on the aisle, they still have the more expensive reservation for the larger vehicle as a back-up. This is a hotly debated topic, though… )

ALSO… sometimes a 2 week rental is more expensive than two 1 week rentals. If the cost difference is significant, make two different reservations; one for the first week, one for the second. You'll have to go to the airport, drop off the week 1 car and pick up the week 2 car, but sometimes it's worth it. I saved $100 once doing this. We needed a car for 10 days. A week and 3 day rental was EXPENSIVE; I saved over $100 by doing two separate five-day rentals instead of one 10 day rental. Good luck! :drive:

I THINK that Hertz charges a cancellation fee if you are within a certain date of rental. Check this carefully if you decide to try and rent elsewhere- you don't want to cancel this for a better rate only to end up paying a fee!

I noticed you said the rate was $399 "including everything." What is everything? You probably don't need to pay for insurance from the rental car; almost all personal vehicle insurance policies will cover rental cars, and many credit cards will provide rental insurance if you use that card for the rental.

THe KLM code is offered through KLM airlines, to folks who join their frequent flyer program. It's free, and you don't have to be flying KLM to use the code. This code is good for rentals at National, and basically it takes off all the additional taxes, fees, and surcharges from a car rental. Sign up for KLM's frequent flyer club, then search the boards here for the KLM code (my paperwork is all AT work, or I'd post it for you). As I said earlier, through National's Emerald Club, I used the KLM code as my Membership ID and a BJ's electronic coupon code for $30 off a weekly rental to get the rate posted above.

Thanks for the reminder about the KLM code & the $30 off coupon. I'm so used to dealing with Dollar pretty exclusively I sometimes forget to check National. Using the KLM code & the $30 coupon I got a price of $194 for 10/8-14 for a standard (Emerald Club member). Still not thrilled with that price but it beats the $232 for a compact I had reserved with Dollar. I'll keep checking for drops as we get closer. I should probably go check for Dec. while I'm at it & see what that combo of codes gives me for a price.

Having trouble getting a coupon to work with KLM. Most seem to bring my rate up. Anyone have a list of coupons that actually work with this contract ID?

I tried using the KLM code and the BJ's $30 off and also tried the 1 Free Day and it did not change my rate at all. It was the same as just using the KLM code.

Well I'm at $270 now with 10 days and a mid-size car on National's emerald aisle. The $30 off coupon didn't seem to do anything either...but I was at $258 for a compact not on the aisle, but I'd rather pay an extra $ for the convenience of not waiting in line! Still hoping for a better code though...

Still hoping for a better code though...
Me too, but this might be as good as it gets.

I just re-booked my mid-October 9 day rental, and brought it down $20 or so to $255.59 with National & on-the-Aisle using the KLM-Flying Blue code. I did the same week/number of days last year and watched rates pretty obsessively, and the best I could do was $266 (full size) for the same number of days with Alamo using Costco codes.

I paid a good 30% more in 2013 than I did in 2012. I did some tracking of prices in 2012 here.

I'm following this thread - looking for a cheaper in-terminal rental.
Dates: October 3 - 10
Holding two Costco reservations
1) Budget Off-site pick-up at E. Colonial Drive (9 miles cab ride) $179 Economy.
2) Budget In-terminal $262 (ouch)!

We did the offsite rental in December 2012 - cab ride was about $22 - even with that it's a savings over in-terminal right now. Crossing my fingers it will go down!

I think it's still pretty early for most coupons for October. Most that I have seen have expiration dates at the end of June. I bet by the time summer rolls around, we'll start seeing more coupons with expiration dates extending through and past October.

Looks like there's movement at Alamo with Costco codes right now.

Just booked the same nine day rental as above for $246.73 (incl taxes) for a compact. Not the best deal I've ever seen, but by far the best price I've seen for October so far.

Can you make reservations for car pick up at Shades of Green in advance? Do you have to be military?
