Sorry I was MIA yesterday. I got busy taking down Christmas decorations. Everything is put away except for the tree and a Christmas wreath with ornaments on it. It took me 3 days to get it all down.
Our whirlwind weekend:
We left on Friday and it took about 8 hours to get to DC. Of course, it rained the whole way. We stayed in a Residence Inn. It was very nice. It was a cross between a DVC studio and 1 bedroom. Will have to stay in one of these places again. They even had a free hot breakfast. We got up Saturday morning and headed toward the Metro for our train ride to the National Zoo. It was a beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day. We saw the 3 pandas, a neat demonstration of the elephants, and the mama tiger and her three 7 month old cubs. They were soo fun to watch. Kaleigh got a stuffed baby tiger and a little book about a tiger mama and her babies to remember her trip by. I had forgotten how hilly that zoo was! We had a really nice time. We relaxed that evening because we knew Sunday was going to be a long day.
We got up and headed into DC on the Metro again ( I love this train). We went to the Air and Space Museum. Kaleigh and I had just finished a unit on transportation in school and the last thing we talked about was space. The funny thing was, we walked around the corner and Kaleigh said "look, it's the Mars Rover!" and she was right. I guess she is learning something in school. Kaleigh loves stuff about space and the planets. We couldn't spend a lot of time here because a 4 year old just doesn't have the patience. They had a special room with stuff from the American History Museum since it is closed until 2008. THey had the original Kermit. From here, we went to the Natural History Museum. We only looked at the dinosaurs and other animals. Kaleigh though they were really cool. She loves dinosaurs. Again, we didn't spend a whole lot of time here. I found you can see more museums with a 4 year old, just none of them in depth. We walked around the Mall and saw the Washington monument. We saw the White House from a distance as wellas the Capitol. We walked over the the new WWII Memorial. From there, we walked the the Lincoln Memorial. Kaleigh is going to look like a bug in the picture! We then went to the Korean War Memorial. We didn't have time to see the Vietnam Memorial. We had to get back and get ready for dinner with my family. Another train ride to the hotel where we had dinner. I couldn't believe how many of my cousins were there from Ohio. Only 3 of my cousins and my brother didn't come. It was nice to see family I hadn't seen in a very lont time. I have a cousin in Anchorage, Alaska, and 2 in Seattle, Washington. They are the kids of my uncle that died. I also got to see my cousin that lives in Chicago and one that lives in Richmond, VA. They are also kids of my uncle that died. I haven't seen most of my Ohio cousins since my grandma died 4 years ago. I hadn't seen my aunt in I don't rember when. It is hard when you live so far away. They live in VIrginia Beach. Anyway, it was a late night and Kaleigh enjoyed playing with her 2nd cousins. Up early the next morning for the funeral. We had to be there by 8:30 AM.
The funeral took place at Arlington National Cemetery. You have to understand that Towslee's get buried in snow storms. But, since this was in VA, it was a rain storm. There was a light rain until we got out of our cars and then it just poured. THe rain stopped about 15 minutes after the funeral. A little background info. My dad was 1 of three brothers and the youngest and shortest and 6'2". The oldest died several years ago from cancer and my uncle who is 18 months older then my dad died from MS. My dad also has MS. My uncle was a Lt. Col. in the Air Force. He was a Base Commander in Califonia when he had to retire on disabilty. I found out that he was involved somehow with the Iran Hostage Crisis in the 70's. He was buried with full military honors. There was a caisson pulled by 4 or 6 horses, It was hard to see. There was a military band. There was a nice ceremny performed by a chaplain. He also had the gun salute. It was very moving, even if it wasn't for family. My aunt had it video taped so those that couldn't come, like my dad, could see the funeral. I took pictures as I didn't know she was having this done. I am proud of the way my uncle served his country and he deserved this funeral. He was always my favorite uncle.
We drove home right after the funeral and actually made it home in about 6-1/2 hours. It was sunny most of the way and we didn't make any long stops.
Needless to say, come Tuesday, we were all exhausted. But, I am glad we went.
I work tomorrow and then Brookes party is on Sunday. Next Thursday, we and the Lauters are going to Disney Princesses on Ice.
We did get some snow yesterday, but it should melt today or tomorrow.
Jerry made our ressies for December yesterday! We just need to figure out October as we are most likely not going to cruise this year. We will move our booking to October 2008 and "just" go to WDW.
I think that is it. SOrry so long winded.
