October 15 - October 22...Read Me (Now with more pictures)!!

Thanks for posting the pictures! Loved your whole report too!

Brenda,

Your trip report has been so much fun to read!! Thanks for sharing! The slideshow was great!

I have to ask....how much are the mochaccino's? We passed by CC 100 times and never went in! Obviously, we will not make that mistake this coming April! I may have to increase my beverage budget

Great photos Brenda...I really liked that one of the martinis!

By the way, you guys looked great on Formal night :)

I believe the mochaccinos were $4.00 each...when we sailed they were offering a Cove Fanatic deal - buy five drinks and get one free. You just had to be sure to keep going to the same person so he / she would know that you were spending you entire vacation budget on coffee drinks. It would make more sense for them to issue a punch card...oh well, maybe they'll begin doing that after they read my cruise comment card!

Thanks for reading!

Don't you love how they were shimmering in the sunlight? I told Jason they should have come with theme music. :teeth:

Thanks for the compliment on the formal night pic - Jason just naturally looks that good! I usually have to put some effort into it. :teeth:

Snore Monster V.2005 is offline tonight...apparently it needs maintenance. I'm happy - I get to sleep almost straight through to 6:30...gaaaaaaacccck! Since when is sleeping until 6:30 a good thing?

I wander out to the verandah, leaving the door open on purpose to wake up Jason...I'm so nice to my man! It's cloudy but warm and humid...looks like we are catching up with Wilma again, or maybe she is catching up with us again...whatever the case we know she's out there and she's not happy. We've been following her progress all week and from a purely selfish perspective her timing has been perfect - she did not disrupt the cruise in any way, the weather has been pretty good all things considered, and she's delaying her Florida arrival until late Sunday or early Monday. While we wouldn't mind staying with Mickey on his boat indefinitely there is that whole "payment expected promptly" thing. If we ain't working we ain't paying. And I do not want to see the type of collection agents a mouse can send after us for late payment. :teeth:

Time for a surprise quiz!

At 7AM Brenda and Jason have breakfast at:

A) Topsiders with many a tousled-head and bleary eye;
B) Goofy's Galley with some very wet children;
C) Cove Cafe where DCL awards us a plaque for the most money spent by a couple on coffee drinks in a 6-day timespan; or
D) The boiler room with a special menu that includes scrambled eggs a la' sea monster, toasted tenticles, and peanut-butter and jellyfish sandwiches.

Breakfast complete - where would you eat? - we wander the ship taking pictures. A bit of advice...many people don't seem to make it above deck until at least 8AM so if you're looking to enjoy some quiet time on decks 9 or 10 during the day you might want to consider this option. We decide to head for Deck 10 to watch the Magic's approach to Castaway Cay - there are some hardy souls who are already here, having been bitten with the same inspirational bug. I last for about ten minutes - I'm wearing a jacket but with all this wind I'm still cold. I need to thaw out again...how about a quick stop at the rainforest??

It is one of the great mysteries of our marriage...how I manage to hold the cold so well while Jason manages to retain so much heat. I try to explain that my grandmother on my mother's side was an iguana but Jason isn't buying it.

We're off the ship before 9AM - oh dear, collective groan...it's raining. Many people hover around the towel guy and take towels but can't seem to decide if they actually want to go anywhere. The crowds are light - the rain seems to be keeping some of them inside - but we look at this as our chance to explore the island before things get hoppin'. Last year we never made it past Cookies BBQ because I felt so cruddy - this year is not last year! Hooray!

We wander into the post office and buy some stamps for the scrapbook...we head over to Marge's Barges and ask if they are going to cancel the parasailing for the day...it is pretty windy and those could be thunderstorms brewing out there. I'm not too sure that I want to come home with a Caribbean perm caused by a mid-air lightning strike. They tell us to check back 30 minutes before our scheduled time. We look at all the stuff for sale and decide not to buy anything...we keep walking until we end up at the Heads up Bar. This is a great location...away from the crowds at the family beach, peaceful, there are hammocks here! If you can't make it over to the grown-up beach try this spot instead...I'm sure it gets busy but I have a feeling that many people don't venture further down to the less populated areas of the beach.

Our parasailing excursion is set for 11:30 so we decide we better get back to the ship and get our stuff - after that we won't be back on board until after 4:30 this afternoon because we have a cabana massage at 3PM.

On the way back to the Magic my happiness is complete - it's the Goofster! And he's got a photographer with him. We must have a picture! I give my secret Disney love a big hug and ask where he's been all week...Jason looks annoyed..."you're not even a dog person," he says.

"Goofy's different, " I reply, "he's cool."

"Yeah, I know that...so can I have my picture taken with him, too, or are you going to monopolize him all day?"

Even big kids squabble sometimes.

It's stopped raining! People are streaming off the ship (I now know how the salmon feel swimming upstream) and we get some strange looks from almost everyone who must be wondering why we are re-boarding at 10AM. But we soon make it to the room, get our suits on, apply the sunscreen (don't want to get any cloudburns), gather up everything we need, and get back downstairs.

At Marge's we learn that the 11AM parasailing group is still waiting to go - all the groups ahead of them were canceled because of the weather. We wait...and then I pace...and then we wait some more...but then! The tour operators show up (we did this last year so we recognize them!) and it looks like we're going to get to go out. Woohoo!!

There are seven of us on our tour - the water is much choppier than last year and there is a big wind as we like to call it out here in the Midwest. The boat ride kicks up a lot of sea spray and we're soaking wet before we've even made it to open water. Who cares? This is fun! Jason and I end up being the last of our group to go up - because the wind is so strong they will not let us parasail separately. Secretly I am pleased by this decision. It was one thing to parasail last year by myself when the winds and seas were calm but I'm a big enough baby to want Jason with me on a morning like this. I have to leave my glasses behind and go up blind because the wind is so strong - poor seeing eye-dog husband has to take all the pictures and help me in and out of my harness and make sure I don't fall off the boat.

It was a blast! The guy in charge of the excursion told us that they only gave us about 300 feet of rope this time because they were worried they wouldn't be able to get us back down if we went any higher. It's so peaceful up here above the water and we dance around in the wind like a candy wrapper caught in an up-draft (thanks to Homer Simpson for that description). I point randomly and tell Jay I think I can see our house.

He rolls his eyes (well, I think he does...he's behind me and I can't really see him, but he's got that tone in his voice that usually goes along with eye-rolling.) "you can't even see your hand in front of your face."

"You're no fun - dork."

"You're even less fun - freak."

"I plan all the vacations and all the excursions - how can I not be fun?"

"Lucky guess."

And then we share a mid-air kiss...we're being reeled back in and the others on the boat are applauding. We grin at each other...well, I think I'm grinning at Jay - my glasses are still missing in action - and then we're heading back to the pier. We learn that the rest of the parasailing excursions will be canceled for the rest of the day due to wind conditions...bummer for everyone else but we sure got lucky!

Glasses clean and back on my nose, it's time for some Konk Koolers and lunch. We get the booze at the family bar and then catch the tram over to Serentiy Bay.

TBC...thanks for staying with me so long. The end draws near...really!

I absolutely, 100% love your trip report. It is probably the best one I have read in the last two years!

I wish I could have been part of your DIS group!! You all looked like you had a great time. As for the honeymoon feel, I agree with you. It's because you don't have kids. I notice how different I am when I travel without my son. It is a lot easier to get romantic and have naughty mud treatments when not worrying about your six year old!!!

Looking forward to the rest of your pictures. You looked great on formal night!

"Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful ship... or is it trip?!"

Whoops! Wrong Island...silly me.

We're on Castaway Cay, thank goodness, and we've finally had a taste of the oft' discussed but never before sampled Konk Kooler. Oh, my! I don't know what's in this thing, but it sure tastes good. Just drink it fast - if you wait too long between sips it gets all warm and runny and blecccchhhie. I know this because I try to finish mine up at the adult beach after lunch and it is vile.

Lunch on the adult beach is a smaller, much more quiet affair than over at Cookies BBQ. We ate at Cookies last year and while the selection there is much broader, we definitely liked the peacefulness of lunch with "grown-ups" only. Once we finish our dogs and burgers we wander down to the beach proper and grab a couple of loungers under an umbrella. The sun has decided to play hide and seek...mostly hide, but that's not such a bad thing because it is a very warm day.

Jason wanders out into the ocean, further and further he goes, and he's still walking. Wow! I decide I gotta try some of that and I gingerly wade into the sea. The water was not nearly as cold as it was this time last year (I guess that's why the hurricanes are still churning) and it is amazingly clear. I can see all sorts of things that I don't know the names of and proceed to take some pictures with the underwater camera. My photographic skills are the stuff of legend - Jason is especially fond of the shot of some shells and little fish with three of my floozey-red toes right on the edge. Sheer brilliance!!

I am stunned by how far out into the bay we can walk without the water coming up over our heads. It is a very cool experience and lots of people are snorkling or just wandering like Jason and me. I also take a moment to just enjoy our surroundngs...it truly is a beautiful island. When we visited last year it was after two hurricanes had torn the place up and it was still looking pretty rough. Amazing what a difference a year can make - the foliage was lush and green, the flowers were stunning...it's like a perfectly manicured jungle. I begin to understand why folks on the DISboards rave about Castaway Cay.

Nature appreciation and landscape design class is now over - time for a massage! And not just any massage - an open air cabana massage. Oh, I can't possibly do justice to the experience...but I'll try.

It's 3PM...people are beginning to make their way back to the ship, the only sounds are the trees whispering in the breeze and the waves rolling into the shore. Jason and I are facedown on our massage tables getting the best massage we've ever had on a beach (actually it's the only massage we've ever had on the beach but it ain't gonna be the last!). Our therapists are good listeners and give us both what we've asked for - Jay wants a firmer massage to help work out some kinks from all that elevator racing we've been doing, and I just want to relax - I want to just ooze off the table and pool on the floor in a permanently gellatinous state. If we'd had another 30 minutes I might have made it.

Sadly, we're the last appointment of the day. We must board the tram with the last group of stragglers and spa workers and head back to the ship. There is much sadness in the air as we wait to board with the last few holdouts. We don't wanna go home...don't make us leave...we'll pay you to let us stay. No one on the island is taking bribes today - perhaps we should have offered more than twenty bucks?

To make ourselves feel better we decide to visit Cove Cafe one last time. We got more sun tonday than we thought and another mochaccino with ice cream sounds pretty darn tasty. James is still here! I swear the man never leaves...DCL must have a fixture filing on this guy. He was wonderful to us all week and gave us one last round of freebies (my thighs will never forgive me) - we made sure to leave him an extra nice tip. Be sure to pay him a visit on your next cruise - he's the man!

Time to get cleaned up and start packing. Oh, I hate this part - let's just get dressed for dinner and go try that espresso martini. Down to the promenade lounge where we are lucky enough to find Lourdes tending bar. She also recognizes us - I wonder briefly what it says about our vacation that the bartenders know us by name and then I order the chocolate martini. Yummmmmmmm! Jason has the espresso martini. Also yummmmmmmm! We are ready to try more but that obnoxious band starts playing. We shout goodbye to Lourdes and wander over to Sessions. Somehow we forgot about how nice and intimate and quiet it is back here - dummies. There is an amazing guy playing piano who sounds just like Louis Armstrong (I mean the way he sings...silly reader I know Louis played the trumpet). There is only one other couple in the whole place. We ordered two more some-tinis (I don't remember what they were) and grabbed a nice plush sofa to park our rapidly buzzing keisters. The waiter brought over a lovely plate of fruit and cheese and crackers for us to munch on while we listened to this wonderful unnamed performer.

Go to Sessions at least once...it's charming. I wish we would have remembered that before now. We talk about coming back after dinner but we still have to pack so we know this is it for the night.

Dinner at Parrot Cay tonight - we share a bottle of wine with Jen and Mark and Julio lets me keep one of those wonderful new 'Til We Meet Again' menus. The show tonight is fun but a little sad. The baked alaska is awful...I wish DCL would make it properly. Oh well, Jason shares his dessert with me - I suggest you order what he did...and if I ever figure out what it was I'll be sure to let you know.

Dinner over it's time to play the "Cram Everything You Own Into a Suitcase by 11PM" game. We barely make it, but the luggage is piled up in the hallway just in time. Now there's nothing left to do but wonder just how much we spent on alcohol this week.

Last day coming up tomorrow: Getting off the ship is worse than getting on; Brenda and Jason get an earfull from Handsome Pete, last minute cruise tips from your devoted author, and we spent how much on booze? In a week??

Thanks again for reading and for your lovely comments.

I'm enjoying your reports tremendously!!! I just want to thank you so much for putting them all in one thread! I hate having to hop from thread to thread lookign for each segment, so THANK YOU!!!

I have enjoyed every entry... but my heart is starting to race! I am not sure I am prepared to hear how much was spent on alcohol! Or Cove Cafe!

Oh - I can't stand the anticipation... tell tell! :rotfl2:

Loved your report!!! and thanks for posting the pics....

....I have to ask - what is the tag game?

I must say that DH and I are getting a HUGE kick out of your Simpsons references because we reference that show constantly. It's a fave of ours.

....I have to ask - what is the tag game?

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you've enjoyed our travel log.

Lessee...how do I explain tag without really confusing everyone here, including me?

Well, basically we had a list of people who agreed to play tag on the ship and we had two very nice people who helped organize it: Paul, who set up a secure Yahoo database for the cruise, and Kevin who set up the rules and really pulled the game together.

The game starts out with everyone receiving a list of players and a magnet. The idea is to start with the person / cabin listed just below your name on this list - you tag them by leaving the magnet and a little tag gift (we tried to make it easy by suggesting that people leave something indicative of their hometowns / states). Then you have to wait for someone to tag you in the same manner before going on to tag the next person on your list - you keep going until you reach your name.

It was a blast! And people were very creative - Kevin made a vacation / party mix CD for everyone, Suzie left a diabetic coma-inducing bag of sweets to take to the movies, Wayne and his family left a bag o' stuff from England including some keychains and a recipe for yorkshire pudding (Yum!).

Our tag was a grab-bag of stuff that was supposed to play off the name we'd given our cruise thread - The Molar Express. A bunch of us suffered a rash of broken teeth through the year...so I found little toothbrush / teeth eraser sets, and watermelon flavored billy-bob candy teeth and put those in a bag with some other goofy stuff.

If you can get enough people to agree to play and get it organized it adds a whole extra dimension to the week. Jason and I had so much fun with it - we can only hope everyone else did to!

And of course there's also room for one or two "special" tag gifts... like Brenda/Jason and I swapped Cubs/Cardinals stuff...

So Brenda, I hear Busch Stadium is getting the wrecking ball as we speak... think the new stadium will be ready?

Later,
Paul

Excellent! (Brenda rubs hands together like Mr. Burns)

I'll tell you a little story I should have included with the second part of Friday's trip report.

When we were at Sessions the brilliant but as-yet unnamed piano man started singing "It was a Very Good Year (AKA When I was Seventeen)"

Jason, bless his romantic heart, leans in close and starts singing in my ear:

"When I was seventeen - I drank some very good beer.
I drank some very good beer,
that I purchased with a fake ID.
My name was Brian McGee,
I stayed up listening to Queen,
When I was seventeen."

This, of course, had the desired effect of making me choke on my some-tini because I had to laugh. That's one of my all-time favorite episodes! :teeth:

I think it's going to be close. Busch isn't coming down in one glorious heap...it's being pulled apart bit by bit...a long slow agonizing sort of demolition. From what I hear it won't be completely gone until next summer - they are taking down the part that is in the way of finishing the new stadium right now.

What a mess!

By the way... Pete loves his Cubs banner. I didn't have the heart to take it away from him - he's made himself a nest... or, dare I say...a cubbiehole??! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

If I can light a fire under Jason I'll get the rest of the pictures loaded and you can see him in all his handsome cubbieness.

PS. I should have the last trip report added in by this evening. Then I just have to get the pictures done (nudges husband...ahem!). Thanks for reading, everybody!

He's good. I knew on our first date that I was going to end up marrying him when he started quoting Bart's crank calls to Moe's Tavern. My personal favorites:

Amanda Huggenkiss and Hugh Jass. :rotfl2:

If you were to briefly mention something from an episode, especially the first ten seasons, Jason could probably quote the scene word for word for you. It's amazing just how much storage space he has in his brain for this stuff.

And now you probably know where our cat Handsome Pete got his name. We also considered getting a second cat and then naming them both Worker and Parasite after the East German cartoon cat and mouse that replaced Itchy and Scratchy, but we got distracted by all this cruise stuff. :teeth:
