October 12-16 4 Day--Minnesota Family of 6 do the Wonder

I'm enjoying the trip report!! I like how you both are posting! Great pictures also! Can't wait to read more!:surfweb:

Hey goofygal,

Thanks for the kind words! I wasn't confident I'd include valuble information, so I had to enlist DW to make sure there's some value to the report!

I was so enjoying reading about your cruise, because it was our cruise, too! There were 8 of us, from Utah. We even stayed at the Wyngate on Sat. night, but we didn't leave until about 10 in a *********** van. (Maybe we ate breakfast together?) but, wait, it gets better--we were on the galley tour with you! The only reason I know is my 29 year old son is in your galley tour picture, as in the red plaid shirt sleeve of my husband! Wow, it is a small world, after all! Can't wait to see more of your pictures, maybe we are in some more. . . .

How cool!

On Sunday at the Wyngate, I got up earlier than the rest of our family, so I ate by myself, probably around 7am. The rest of the family ate closer to 8am.

The Galley tour was fun. That's one of the good things about less than perfect weather; we did things like that. Anything that include a chocolate chip cookie is enjoyable, right?!?!

Tuesday 10/14
Nassau Day!
By the time I woke up, around 7:00 again, we were pulling into Nassau. I planned another quick run, but the track is closed when the ship is preparing to dock. This ended up working out well for me. I wandered up to deck 10 and found a spot right over where Captain Henry was steering the ship into the dock. Just like on the DCL Planning video! I shot baskets for a few minutes before heading back to the room to check on everyone else.

081.jpg

It was a beautiful sunny day, but still extremely windy. DW, the girls and I headed for Beach Blanket Buffet for breakfast. It was really windy on the outdoor dining area, but it was too nice to eat inside.

We almost had to nail everything down to keep it from blowing away. And then I turned my back on my plate for a second and a seagull made off with a piece of my bacon! MINE MINE MINE MINE!!!

We survived a nice breakfast, maybe not as nice as brunch at Palo, but very nice. I really enjoyed the grilled tomatoes.

The girls headed to the club, DS13 slipped away somewhere and DS17…hung out in the room! I felt bad for Rommel (I hope I have the spelling right!), our cabin host. He had to work around DS17 every day.

DW and I didn’t plan to go into Nassau figuring that there was more than enough to keep us happy on the Wonder. Since it was sunny, put on swimsuits and headed for the adult pool.

Just like at breakfast, towels, clothing, etc… had to be nailed down to keep it from blowing away. But it was sunny anyway. While we were at the adult pool, I stopped at the Cove Café for the best cup of coffee I had while on the Wonder. I consider myself a huge Disney fan, and I LOVE DCL, but I’m baffled by the Nescafe. I guess I can understand that the cost of having decent coffee at the drink stations may be prohibitive, but it would be nice to have better coffee in the dining rooms or maybe available through room service. Oh well, I’m a “cup half full” person, so I’ll just say I really enjoyed my coffee from the Cove Café and leave it at that!

DD9 was scheduled to have a beaded braid put in her hair at noon, so DW left to get her and I moved our things to the family pool. With many people off the ship in Nassau, we had no trouble finding good chairs by the pool.

086.jpg

While DD9 was getting her braid put in, DD12 decided to get one as well.

Lauraljp: Actually it was a hairwrap. DD 12 had gotten the cornrow crown on our last cruise. Neither one of them wanted to do that. I believe it was around $25 for the crown last times. The hairwrap was a little less. The shorter the hair the less expensive it is. I think it was $1.50 per inch and extra for beads.

MBB: I ate lunch at Goofy’s Galley while the braiding was going on. I hadn’t eaten at Goofy’s on our last cruise and I was really impressed with their sandwich selection. It was difficult to eat a light lunch (saving room for what was sure to be an excellent dinner), but I settled on two small sandwiches and some fruit.

Lauraljp: I ate at Beach Blanket Buffet. It was great! I tried stone crabs for the first time and the dessert choices were overwhelming. I had to send someone to the cabin to get DS 17 to make sure he ate there. They had asparagus and calamari--two of his favorites!

MBB: By the time we had finished lunch, I realized we had been in the sun for quite awhile. I had used sunscreen, but since it had been almost two months since I’d spent much time in the sun back in Minnesota and because I’m sure the sun in the Caribbean is more intense than what I’m accustomed to, I thought it would be wise to find something else to do.

088.jpg

Back in our room I found… DS17! He agreed to leave the ship to walk around Nassau for awhile. We picked up DS13 along the way and had a boy’s quick trip into Nassau. We were only there for about an hour, but now we can say we were in Nassau. I considered buying a t-shirt at Del Sol, but I didn’t see any prices on the shirts. Oh well; this left more money for me to buy a couple t-shirts at WDW later in the week!

After getting back on board, it was almost time to prepare for Pirate Night! We found that our priorities on this cruise were different than on our 2003 cruise. Pictures with and autographs from characters were a high priority five years ago, this year there were only a couple pictures with characters.

DISNEYWONDER004.jpg

On one hand, it was nice that we didn’t have to spend a lot of time waiting in line (and there were lines!!) On the other hand, it was fun when the kids were in awe of the characters. Anyway, before dinner on Pirate Night we waited in line to have our family picture taken with Mickey in his pirate costume. No one in our family had an elaborate costume. I hate to be a party pooper, but none of us are real creative when it comes to costume ideas, space was at a premium in our suitcases and I’ve worn too many costumes in the past that have been uncomfortable.

There were a lot of great costumes and that was fun to see. There were also many people who were in less “piratey” than us! I think all us at least had a skull and crossbones somewhere on our person. And we wore our Pirates IN the Caribbean bandanas in the dining room. All of us except DS17! Stick In The Mud! He did wear black!

Here are some dinner pictures--

Dinner was great again. I stuck with the chef’s recommendations and wasn’t disappointed.

A few minutes after dinner, we went up to deck 10 to save a spot for the Pirate Party. Once again it was really windy and I was afraid that we wouldn’t get to see fireworks! As you know if you’ve been on a DCL cruise, DCL is the only cruise line that has fireworks at sea!

We planted ourselves in a good spot on the rail overlooking the family pool and the Ariel Vision. I hate sitting around saving a spot, especially when there are so few hours to enjoy on a 4-day cruise, but it was worth it to have a good view of the party.

118.jpg

The party was led by Shaka (from Wales) and Martin among other cast members and characters and it was fun. It’s hard to do a lot of dancing when the deck is so crowded, but it was a great event. And, we got to see fireworks! They aren’t Magic Kingdom fireworks, but they are the only fireworks you’ll see at sea!

133.jpg

Next was the post party buffet. I certainly didn’t need more food, but this was too good to pass up.

The younger three kids scattered after the party. I went to retrieve DS17 (from the cabin) to get in on the buffet. I have somehow never had a turkey leg, so DS17 and each got a turkey leg. Mmmmm! There were probably other things that I might have liked more, but I couldn’t pass on the turkey leg.

There were a couple of desserts I didn’t need, but really wanted to try, but they start taking down the buffet pretty quickly.

I had to be the mean dad and get the younger three kids back to the cabins by midnight. DD9 was always upset when we picked her up at the club and DD12 was very unhappy that I wouldn’t let her stay up to watch Pirates of the Caribbean on Ariel Vision. We had kind of agreed to let do that, thinking that a couple of her friends would be watching with her. None of her friends were allowed to be out there and her brother had gone to Aloft so we had her come back to the cabin. We had to get up for Castaway Cay the next day! There had been a little fatigue-related drama during the day, so everyone was better off getting to bed sooner rather than later.

Finally, Castway Cay...

Love every minute Brent, come on finish it up!!!! Ok, I'll try to be patient.

I am enjoying your trip report. You have a lovely family.

We are from MN too and got on the ship for a 3 day when you guys were getting off. Minnesotans must think alike, we chose to cruise over MEA too, the kids missed 2 days of school. We did one park the day we got off the ship. We also chose to eat at restaurants we don't have at home, or if we have them they are not in our area. What part of MN are you from? We live in the St. Michael/Albertville area.

Can't wait to hear about your day at CC!!!

I am loving your trip report... Can't believe that was you doing the YMCA dance... I have pictures and video LOL.. I will send them your way. I didnt know about the galley tour, that sounds like fun, guess I should have read the navigators a bit better..oh well maybe in October....

Can't wait to read the rest of your report

What a beautiful family you have! Thanks for the great trip report.

I have 2 boys and 2 girls too. We cruised the 4 day Wonder last February. It was terrific, my kids are younger than yours, 9, 6, 4 and almost 1. I look forward to cruising again with them when BabyDD is 3. I am enjoying so much reading about how your older children are enjoyed the cruise.

Looking forward to your next installment!

Hey Butterx3,

We're from New Hope, just east of 169 at Rockford Rd. DW and I were at Kohls in Maple Grove tonight and ran into a family that had just done a 7-day 10/18. With the weather here today, the DCL withdrawal hits us hard, doesn't it?!?!?

I just posted a WDW trip report yesterday if you're interested...

Hey Renysmom,

I have to believe they look for the WORST dancers in the crowd and put them in the Village People!

Laura is really good about checking Navigators. If it were just me, I'd miss a lot!

I can't believe it was four weeks ago tonight I was sitting here reading your posts as you traveled down to FL!

Since we got back, I've pulled for your Mountaineers whenever I've seen highlights!

Take care!

Hey Semi:

When we did a 3-day DCL cruise in 2003, our youngest DD was 4 and we were concerned about whether she's be willing to let us leave her at the clubs, but she never wanted to leave when picked her up!

It's a different experience when the kids are older. But's great at any age!

We're going to try to get the last installment posted tomorrow. Unfortunately, it ends with us leaving the ship:sad:

What a great trip report. We were also on the Oct 12 cruise.

We had a great time and reading your trip report is bring back lots of happy memories!

I know right where New Hope is. I graduated from Cooper HS.

I have to agree, with you on the kids ages too. We did the cruise in 2006 when my DD was 6 and youngest DS was 3. The awe and amazement of the characters was something you never forget watching your children experience. My youngest DS was 6 this time, so there were a few of those moments still. (One was the fireworks after the Pirate party). But my DD who is now 9 was not obsessed with the princesses like last time. I think we need to do one more Disney Cruise before we graduate to another line. I missed Bingo which I really wanted to do this time, and Disney Dreams, and next time I would like to grab a chair right away and Watch Prirates of the Carribean on the big screen. if we wanted to see it this time we would have had to stand or sit on the floor. Plus can anyone ever experience CC too many times.

Can't wait till your last day. I will have to read your WDW trippie too.

Small world, what year did you graduate? I graduated from Armstrong.

I graduated in 1988. I grew up in Maple Grove on the border of Brooklyn park, so 2 houses on my block went to Cooper and the rest went to Osseo.

Wed 10/15
Castaway Cay!
This turned out to be the nicest day of our cruise! Other than a little rain on Monday, Sea Day, we had had pretty good weather. Occasional clouds and a lot of wind, but not bad. But it was nearly a perfect morning as we pulled into Castaway Cay.

136.jpg

DW and I got to meet two of our DIS friends, Aloha Bob and Renysmom (and Renysdad?). DISing on the 10/12 Wonder Cruise Meet was great fun in the weeks leading up to the cruise so it was a lot of fun to meet our friends in person.

We had to rush, but we made it off the ship shortly after 8:30. We should have waited for a tram, but we walked all the way to the far end of the family beach. Oh well, we got a great spot. We claimed a hammock and a couple lounge chairs and I began blowing up inflatable rafts and tubes. I’m not sure how much money we saved by bringing our own, but by the time I finished I was wishing we had just rented rafts and tubes on Castaway Cay!

DW and DS17 took off at 9:45 to go parasailing. I stayed at the beach with the younger three and we enjoyed our rafts and tubes.

Lauraljp: Parasailing was something I regretted not doing on our last cruise so I didn’t want to miss out this time. I was a little concerned during the beginning of the week that it would be cancelled due to the winds. Although it was less windy than it had been it was necessary for everyone to go tandem. This was a little disappointing because I had wanted DS and I to video and photograph each other but we still took pictures from the air and of other people. I also think it is probably a totally different experience if you are up there all alone. It went very quickly. With all the picture taking I was doing we were soon on our way down and it was over. Nothing against my son, it was a fun experience, but I would like try it again sometime alone.

Going Up!

A great view!

Lunch at Cookie’s was delicious--hamburger, potato salad, a really good tomato salad, a chocolate chip cookie and really good apple cake.

During lunch, clouds rolled in and we were afraid that we might not see the sun the rest of the day.
DS17 wanted to go back to the ship and we were under the impression that minor children needed to be accompanied by a parent when getting back on the ship. After DS boarded it didn’t seem like he would have needed me. It was a little frustrating because it took about a half hour for the round trip. Oh well.

At the observation tower.

DS13 had taken off for the teen beach and DW, our DDs and I rented bikes and rode the entire circuit. It was a lot of fun to see the interior of the island and while we were out the sky cleared and we got a couple more hours of sun on the beach.

This image will have to keep me warm on those upcoming cold Minnesota winter days. I’ll always have Castaway Cay!

Castaway Cay day is probably never long enough, but we started feeling the pressure of having to pack weighing on us. I got a Konk Cooler for DW and we stopped to do a little souvenir shopping at She Sells Sea Shells on the way back to the ship.It turned out to be a great day on the island!
If there was one thing I could change about the cruise it would be to save the Day at Sea for the last day. I understand that there are reasons for why the schedule is set up the way it is, but it would be nice to have a little more time to wrap things up. After getting cleaned up, we got our tips ready and delivered them to Guest Services, made our final purchases at Shutters then started packing.

We were going to WDW after the cruise, so we started dividing things into “need at WDW” suitcases, the “don’t need at WDW” suitcases, and what we would need the next morning for debarkation. This is hard! It was complicated because we were in two rooms. Did mention I mention that it would have been really nice to have connecting rooms? It was time to get ready for dinner and we had a good start on our packing, but we weren’t completely done.

It was another great dinner, but so sad knowing that it was the last dinner! It’s funny how attached you can get to your servers at just four meals! If any of you are fortunate enough to draw Putu and Clement as your servers at an upcoming cruise, tell them Mister Brent and Madam Laura miss them!!!

195.jpg

Clement is from France so he made recommendations from Triton’s French themed menu. He even recommended a meringue dessert that was originally created in a town near his home. On our cabin TV, Cruise Director Peter assured us that even though it was the last night, the cruise was not over! We still had Disney Dreams to look forward to, and to completing our packing so we could get our luggage out before 11:00.

The show was really good. On our last cruise, I had fallen asleep during part of it, but I was able to see it all this time and it was worth staying awake for. It’s a lot of fun to hear all the classic Disney songs sung live. The cast does a great job.

When we got back to our room, the hallway was already filled with luggage. There was a little tension, but we did get our last bag out at about 10:59, and I don’t think we forgot anything! A couple of the backpacks we carried off the ship were pretty jam packed!

We knew that none of the kids would want to go to bed on the last night. I didn’t want to go to bed on the last night! DW and I made a last stop at Mickey’s Mates and Treasure Ketch. DW got a nice DCL zip up hoodie and I got a nice DCL pen (on clearance!) and some of the DCL H2O shampoo and body wash.

There were tears when we picked up DD9 at the club. She had made several friends like Isabelle, DISer Kimizia’s daughter, and she was sad about not seeing them again. I wonder if it’s difficult for the cast members to have to say good bye so often. I suppose it’s harder for us than it is for them!

DD12 had a midnight curfew and she’s pretty good about sticking to curfews, but I had to track down DS13. DS17 was in his place in his room. I guessed (correctly)he was in Aloft and on the way I had the chance to get a Konk Cooler and watch the Phillies clinch the NL pennant on Ariel Vision.

The ship was really rocking! The pools had become wave pools. It was pretty funny. I made it into bed a couple minutes after midnight. I hated to go to bed knowing that when I woke up it would be time to leave and that morning was coming up fast! If I hadn’t been so tired, I would have been concerned about rocking of the ship keeping me awake. I think I was asleep in about 30 seconds.

Coming up...the end.

Oh no! Falcons and Hawks on the same thread! This could be trouble!

We live close enough to Cooper to hear the band when there are football games.

I was not a jock, or even a fake jock, so I won't cause much trouble LOL!!!

I completely agree that the last day should be a Sea Day. Our day at Castaway Cay was overshadowed later in the day by the weight of packing stress also!!! It would be nice to have more time to pack and just relax till late afternoon at Castaway Cay.

I'm really enjoying your report - are you going to do a bit on your WDW stay also? I'm not ready for it to end :)

Wow looks like you took full advantage of Castaway Cay.. What a wonderful day you all had. I would love to try parasailing but on the other hand I don't do heights very well so probably not a good idea.
