Oct family fun run

The 5K that is run on the Friday of marathon weekend changes parks and themes all the time. It is very uncommon for the support 5Ks to run thorough the same park two yeas in a row so I was expecting the 5K in October to run through one of the other parks.

Getting rid of the MNSSHP ticket was actually one of the few times Disney has listen to runner feedback.. Last year you had to pay $99 for the 5K which included the MNSSHP ticket for Sunday night. A lot of people though came down just for the weekend and left Sunday. Basically all those people ended up paying $99 just to run a 5K with no official time or age group awards.

This year the 5K is only $50 but you aren't forced to buy a ticket that you may never use.

Really? The Jan 5K has been in Epcot for the past 5-6 years with the same course as far as I know. They just change the theme for whatever movie or DVD is out.

I thought the Oct 5K being moved from the MK for 2011 might have more to do with the 40th anniversary of that park being that day too.

I ran it with my daughter last year, and posted a video of our experience on the blog.

DIS Unplugged: Video Tour of Mickey's Halloween 5K through the Magic Kingdom

That is one of the reasons, it interested me. It looked so fun! I'm not a runner anymore by any means. Knee problems and back problems put a stop to that...but a 5k I could do. Still thinking about it but I really thought running through MK was awesome. I like Ak, but it's just not the same.

In 2008 it was the 5K Family Safari and in 2009 it was the Circle of Life 5K and I think both went through the AK. There have also been races through DHS. I don't think the January race ever went through MK but I can't say for certain. I heard they wanted to reserve that honor to the people doing the half or full marathon which is why they didn't run through MK in the past but that very well might just be urban legend.

I guess they don't change every year but they do rotate parks pretty often. The October race might have moved because of the anniversary but I don't think the October 5K will move parks any less often than the January one.

I didn't notice the price difference. Thanks for pointing that out! I may have changed my mind back, now.

Thanks, I do remember those races through Animal Kingdom now. Don't remember any through DHS in January, but I could be wrong...

I am sort of looking forward to going through Animal Kingdom in the morning before the park opens and after dark, too.

I ran the 5k through the Magic Kingdom last year and very well may run the 5k through the Animal Kingdom this year. To be honest I'm looking forward to running through the AK. The terrain will be a little rougher because the AK paths have certain curves and bumps to them. You need to be on the lookout for this to avoid possible injury.

Like Frank said, I'm sort of glad they excluded the MNSSP ticket this year. My only complaint about the 5k at Disney are the medals. I'd rather have a small medal made of medal versus a larger rubber medal. For some a 5k is a somewhat siginificant accomplishment and a medal (medal) would be appreciated. Otherwise the 5k fun run is a "fun" race.

The run through AK is fun. The terrain, at least in my experience, isn't as bad as you think it is. Where there were issues in the past are a couple of pinch points where the path narrows. If you are in a large group this kind of causes a bottleneck situation.

It would be nice if they gave out medals but I can't really fault them for giving out medallions instead. I've done a lot of 5Ks and can only remember one that gave out finisher medals to everyone.
