oct cruise cancelled

Yes, I do empathize with those who've had their cruise canceled.
But, I do have a different opinion than most I've read so far.

It's a 3 Day cruise on October 28. There are plenty of reasons why
I don't find this truly horrifying.

1. I was bumped off a cruise booking in 1997. I was able to find
another ship to sail instead, and it worked out for me. I didn't let it bother me, and I still had a wonderful time. So yes, I have been there!

2. It's a 3 day cruise. I can understand that companies often
charter short cruises like this.

3. It's October 28th! Not only is this during hurricane season, it
is probably a slow season for the ship, anyway. Who's to say that
Disney didn't request the company to charter that date to
inconvenience the fewest amount of pre-booked guests? I know that I probably would if I worked for Disney Cruise Line.

3a. It's 6 months from now, too. Many people don't book a year early like I do. (Yes, I'm one of the people that book a year in advance!) The people who booked early have been given compensation to change their cruise dates.

4. Disney is still a business, last time I checked, and they can do
what they like. The other cruise lines charter cruises for groups,
so why shouldn't Disney do so?

Yes, Disney made it frustrating for many of the people who were booked on that cruise, but Disney shouldn't be vilified for doing what is considered an industry norm.

I'm sure my opinion won't be very popular, but I'll stick by it.
:D

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If everyone agreed on everything, this world would be a very boring place. :p

You are entitled to your opinion.......even if it is completely wrong.

LOL!

I teach in college and I have the dates for my spring breaks 5 years out. Once we were on a RCCL ship and we wanted to book next years on board for the discount. Imagine our surprise when we were told there were no outside cabins for the cruise we wanted, a 4 night cruise sailing out of Puerto Rico. A company had already booked all outside cabins which were going to be used by the top salespeople the following year. We booked an inside cabin because it what was available.

If this had happened to us, I could not change my dates, I have to live with the school calendar. We were thinking of going on the Nov. 11th cruise, a school holiday, and I have Fridays off, I have to think some more about it before I book with Disney.

My condolences to all who have been affected. I almost can't believe this has happened.

Oh boy! I nearly had a heart attack! We are on the 3 night Wonder on October 21st for our 8 year anniversary. That would have been a nightmare to change all our WDW plans, plane tickets, etc.. before it. I feel SO bad for the people on that cruise. :earseek:

I'm in the same situation as you. It's very difficult to get away....in fact, we really wanted to do a 3-day the weekend of the 14th in October this year but the Wonder is in drydock. Good for the Wonder. Bad for us.

The above is for the land/sea package. The 10/28/04 - 11/04/04 $799 $1119 $1819 refers to the 10/28 3 night stay at the resort and 10/31 4-night Wonder cruise. There should no longer be a land and sea package starting 10/24 as that package would have been 4 nights at the parks and the 10/28 3-night cruise.

I was bumped off a cruise booking in 1997

My sympathies, however what to one person is a minor inconvenience, to another may be a disaster. Try booking four or five cabins, friends and relatives from all over the place, planning to get them together with holidays, flights, hotels and then have everything moved 3 or 4 days one way or the other. It is ridiculous.

It's a 3 day cruise

What would be your cut off of days to allow this to occur. I know I had a timeshare booked and paid for in conjunction with my mere 3 day cruise and it would have really screwed up everything. Plus I have to pick holidays way in advance. Once in they are set in stone. Its more than just monetary compensation.

It's October 28th! Not only is this during hurricane season, it is probably a slow season for the ship

So what? People have chosen an advertised and available cruise planned and put money down.

It's 6 months from now, too

Yes and to some 6 months is a long time. To others like myself I MUST plan and choose holidays way in advance. Now what?

Yes, Disney made it frustrating for many of the people who were booked on that cruise, but Disney shouldn't be vilified for doing what is considered an industry norm.

To charter a ship is fine. However to advertise, sell space on it, and then cancel everyone is not what I consider the "norm". If by chance it IS the norm this does NOT make it right, proper or acceptable as can be seen by the reaction to this situation.

Briar Rosie you're very welcome to stick by your opinion. However to echo Nick :) .................

Cheers,
Grumbo

... but Disney shouldn't be vilified for doing what is considered an industry norm.

I still don't understand how that would make it ok. Disney markets themselves as a family-oriented, family environment. Wishes, pixie dust, happy, kind, gentle....DIFFERENT than any other.

This action speaks louder than words. They obviously don't value us as families and individuals. Their actions say that they value our money more, which is fine for a business and corporate environment (which Disney is). BUT don't act like you care when you really obviously don't. :sad2:

Shame on them.

The industry norm is to build more ships, offer new iteneraries. If DCL would put out the $$$$ for two new ships, booking one ship every now and again wouldn't be as big of an issue as it is now.

DCL should have to repay you for your plane tickets, but If they don't did you have travel insurance. Does anyone even know if travel insurance would cover this?

I am really sorry for the families taht are affected by this. But one fact remains true, as sorry as we may feel for everyone, I see the same sentiment in almost every post! I am glad it was not my sailing. Disney knows that they have a marketable product, and even though they may feel some loss of revenue from this decision, in the long run, how many of us are going to cancel our future sailings? What's that I hear? I pin dropping? :teeth: LOL That my friends, is the power that DCL wields and they know it.

I agree completely with being outraged at this! I have a horrible time changing any vacation plans after I've made my choices, there are a lot of other people in my group who get vacations, too!!

Here's yet another thing to think about, how horrible would it be to be the rep on the phones for Disney for the next few days?!?!? YIKES!!! I'd have to call in sick!! You KNOW the person that OK'd this HORRIBLE decision doesn't have to deal with the fallout!!!
