Welcome both families. We have a great group of folks that are really looking forward to sailing on Halloween.

nenner1: those graphics are fantastic. Nice work! Love to see that on a T-shirt. Woo Hoo :cool1:

Thanks for the cool graphic.

I agree, it would look great on a tee shirt....gives me a project to work on.

Do you have room for three more?!

We have booked our FIRST EVER CRUISE - and of course, we had to go DISNEY! :goodvibes

I absolutely could not be more excited!:yay: I have spent the better part of the day reading this thread - and after hearing back from our TA - I can finally post and say we're coming too!

It will be - myself (Melissa), DH (Kevin) and DD Madison - who will be 12 when we sail. We live in Virginia - between Staunton and Harrisonburg (Shenandoah Valley).

Looking forward to getting to know you guys and what we need to do for our first cruise! :yay:
Welcome! Congrats on booking your first cruise!:thumbsup2

Welcome to the group. I trust this will not be your last cruise. Our first was only 3 days and we booked our second on the first ful day.

We're in. Added on at Bay Lake Tower and took the seven night cruise incentive. Upgraded to a Cat 4 room because we're five (DW, DS12, DD10, DS8) and away we go. See you in 2010!

bob

Welcome as well. It is fun watching this group grow and mature over time.

I am getting soooo excited now....less than a month til our FAMILY REUNION, and i have sooooo much to do.

Still working on our costumes for Halloween, But the good thing is , it is what me and DH will wear on the cruise for Halloween too.

And kids also if they even dress up on the cruise, (you know....teenagers:confused3)

Sweet! So I was wrong the first time and right the second! ;):rotfl:

SPEAKING OF........

Are we doing anything as a group for Tshirts, or Lanyards??

Funny you mentioned this I was just talking with one of my buddies from last years cruise. She is on the Halloween cruise this year and she did their lanyards...they are awesome, check it out:

I know where to get those (LOL) if you all like this design! I think lanyards for our group would be great! We loved having them on our last cruise. Everyone else on the ship was asking us where to "buy" them.

Anyway I don't know how you guys would want to do this, on my last cruise several "contributors" put in $10/each (and got their names listed on everyones badges as recognition for financing the project) but we could always do it the each-pays-for-their-own way. My friends said these cost $3 apiece after the shipping and setup fees and that seemed reasonable to me (of course most orders like this are priced based on volume...the more you order the cheaper they cost)

Anyway just some food for thought for you guys! Discuss away! :)

I'm glad everyone likes the logo :goodvibes

WOW,

Those are incrdibley Nice.

I am impressednot abig lanyard person myself but would maybe go for somethign like that..........

Thanks for sharing those.

The lanyard is very cool. I am up for any price structure, sharing or paying their own way.

I think this cruise is going to be the best Halloween ever for my girls and that is mostly due to the folks we are sailing with.

Let me know where to send my money and it is as good as done.

Thanks all, especially nenner1

Great idea. We will need two. I would be willing to give up to $5.00 per lanyard. You know we only have one year to get ready now. Where does the time go?!! Lois

Okay - you know we are total newbies! Tell me about excursions you have done - or want to do this go round. Do you pick something from Disney's website - or strike out on your own?

We perfer to do Disney for anything Major.

As you are covered if something goes wrong, like the excursion runs over time for some reason the Ship wont leave without you.

If you go out on your own,and miss the ship.....YOUR OUTTA LUCK.

We did explore on our own in Mazatlan, but we just grabbed a cab, asked the guy to take us to some places of interest and he did....IT was pretty cool.

I think we will either rent an electric car with the kids in KEY WEST or Just dosoemthing close by in Mallory square and go back to the ship.

We can go to KEY WEST when ever we want and i dont se it as a really Kid Freindly spot actually kind of surprised Disney even stops there.

Our first cruise i had no clue what to do.

We did 2 toursof the Islands.......Unless you have smallchildren or old people with you,DONT DO THIS.......It is a bit boring!

On our second cruise we did, A GREAT JEEPexcursion and also a snorkeling excursion, the snorkeling actually turned into a dolphin watching as the water wasmurky but there was about 12 dolphins we follwed and watched VERY closely for about an hour.

We also had a horse backriding excursion planned but it rained andwe canceled.
Have fun, do what you want or do nothing at all!!!

I am sort of looking forward to doing nothing at all this time around!

We always pick from the DCL excursions. There are good options outside of DCL like shoretrips.com, but we are more comfortable with knowing there is an excursion customer service desk on deck 3 that can answer any question or concern.

Those are adorable! I'd be in for 3 ;)

LOL, did I just volunteer myself? ;)

I don't mind doing lanyards, unless someone else wants to do it. :) So I've already started a rough list. Anyone who is interested in the idea go ahead and post (I've got those down who already posted) send me a PM or email at nenner1 at yahoo dotcom. Let me know how many you would like. We'll go from there. I don't think we need to worry about how to do the money yet. We can see how many are interested after a few months and how the price is looking and then we'll throw ideas around. :thumbsup2

We have done it both ways, through Disney and on our own. We mostly do our own thing now since we are more comfortable with it after going through Disney a couple of times. In Grand Cayman last time (and we plan on doing it again) we did the Stingray City/Half-Day snorkel excursion on our own through Captain Marvin's. We had a wonderful time and the price was very reasonable too- way cheaper than Disney, no age restrictions (we could have brought our baby), and more options for a longer trip (the Disney excursion was just Stingray City I think, and we got two more snorkel stops). I thought it was great.

In Cozumel last time we did our own thing too, we rented a car and drove to the East side of the island. That was also a great experience but we did not care for the agressiveness of the shopkeepers in town. Of course it was quite different once we got out of the port area and we had no problems, we just weren't prepared for it. We saw some lovely sights on our road trip though. Next time in Cozumel some things we have in mind are Xcaret on the mainland and Chankanaab. Xcaret is a very LONG excursion far away so we will probably eat the extra cost and go through Disney for the comfort of knowing we won't be left behind if something should happen.
Chankanaab we may or may not do on our own. Last I read the Dolphin excursions (Chankanaab and Dolphinairis) were not allowing cruise passengers to book on their own. Of course there are ways around that but I'm not sure we would bother with it. There is something to be said for the convenience of how Disney runs their excursions. :goodvibes

If you want to read about what we did in more detail and with a lot of pics, check out my TR, click on the black mouse ears with the red square on it in my sig and that will take you there. :)

In Key West for sure we will do our own thing. It can be a rather raucous atmosphere and since we will be there during Fantasy Fest I would expect that to be enhanced. Strolling down Duval isn't too terrible (under normal circumstances all bets may be off due to FF)..Margaritaville is still family friendly enough and there are some fun things to do as far as sightseeing, we love the Conch Train which takes you around town and shows you the historical sights (Hemingway House, Southernmost Point, etc.) I personally am not a huge fan of the beaches in KW...but that is partly because we live near gorgeous beaches so take that for what its' worth ....LOL;) Sunset at Mallory Square is not to be missed (again can be racy but mostly family friendly entertainment such as oven balancing (you read that right), cats that jump through fire hoops, Iguana men and the like. Very eclectic and not boring for sure!!! :rotfl2:

Of course there are our personal must do's in KW which besides Margaritaville include the Kino shoe factory, the chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick (available in lots of places), the shell shop in Mallory Square, and the craft "booths" at sunset. Key West is a lot of fun!

Hope that helps you a little bit!!! :goodvibes

Hi everybody!! It has been a LONG time since I posted, but with good reason. I wasn't sure if we were going to be able to keep this date or not because of school. Here in Texas, we have a truancy law that prohibits kids being taken out of school for more than 10 unexcused days per semester. And if we went on a Halloween cruise, we were definately going to WDW for a week before so we could go to MNSSHP. We were thinking that maybe we would have to move our cruise date to Christmas Day again (our first cruise was spring break and our second was Christmas), but the cost is TRIPLE to go at Christmas and I remember how hard I had to work to save up the astronomical price of that cruise:scared1: The price of a week long cruise combined with one full week at WDW at Halloween was STILL cheaper than JUST the Christmas cruise by itself.

So, I talked to the teachers of my two older kids (who will be 17 and 14 at cruise time) and asked their opinions of what to do and how strict they REALLY are about taking the kids out for two whole weeks in Oct/Nov. I got the same answer from almost all of them....withdraw them from school and re enroll them when we get back. Now, I have a problem with this because my daughter will be a senior and my son is in GT so I am afraid he will lose his place in the program. What is everyone's opinion of this??? I SO SO SO badly want to keep this cruise date, but what effect will it have on the kids and their schooling?

Thanks for any input anyone might have
Shannon

Lynn, Jen & "Pudo" - THANKS so much for the AWESOME information about excursions! I feel a little less lost now, but no less excited! I feel like a sponge - just ready to absorb whatever I can find! I ordered a Passporter and the Birnbaum guide - my first "cruise" purchases! Thanks again!

Shannon - as much as I want to go on this cruise - if something happens next year and DD's teachers are against her missing the days, or if somehow our district changes the attendance policy to be more like yours - we would simply reschedule. You asked for opinions - and in my opinion (FWIW) - it's too big of a risk for your kids' future. Withdrawing them from school seems like a MAJOR deal. Being that you are so stressed about this issue - and worrying about the ramifications, you know what you should do, but it's not what you want to do! I'm sorry that your school district puts you in this situation - it sucks! (Is there anyway to get an "educational waiver" - visit the Mayan ruins and do an in-depth report?)

I'm sure whatever you decide will work out for your family. Again, just my humble opinion. :cool2:
