It's been awhile since my trip, about five months, but I have a good memory, took notes while I was there, and have my pictures, so I should be able to write a decent trip report. This is my first trip report, and I actually started writing one a while back, but lost it in computer files, so hopefully this will fare better.

Pre-Trip

I started thinking about returning home to the World last Feb, and since I couldn't talk anyone into going with me someone suggested I go solo, (he'd gone solo before,) and after reading several solo trip reports here and at Mouse Planet decided to go for it.

It was easy for me to decide to go in Oct, since I'd always wanted to go for the Food and Wine Festival, and this would be the first time I'd be old enough to drink, and also there was MNSSHP, and the added bonus of it being value season.

The exact dates weren't really an issue for me, since I don't have school anymore, (graduated college two years ago,) and I didn't have anything to worry about at home, since I live with my parents, so my animals would be fine, etc.

I booked my flight at Travelocity for around $180, and booked a room at All Star Music for the value season rate of $77, so I was set.

In July I was able to call for all of my ADR's, and called each day in a row at 7:00 AM, for ten days in a row. This was right before it went to 90 + 10 days, otherwise I would of only had to have made one phone call. I ended up getting a calling card after using up all of my minutes on my cell, (had a $100+ bill that month.) Was able to get every ADR I wanted, so I was happy about that.

At the end of September, less then a week before my trip, I seriously considered not going. DBF and my cat were sick, so I felt like staying close to home. But DBF insisted I go anyway, (he was supposed to join me for a weekend, but that never happened,) and the cat ended up being okay. Looking back I'm glad I went since everything turned out okay, but if something had happened when I was there, wouldn't have forgiven myself.

Flight

I had a 7:55 AM flight out of PHL, so I was up very early that morning, before 4:00, (and I usually sleep past 10:00,) let alone the fact that I could hardly sleep the night before out of mixed emotions, nerviosness - my first solo flight, trip, etc, worriness about cat and DBF, (it was interchangable who I was worried more about all week,) and excitement, after all I was going to WDW.

I would also like to add right here that DBF lied about how sick he really was, he had said it wasn't anything too serious, just some chest pains, that's what he said, but I know that he knew that if he had told be the truth I wouldn't of left, I was mad at him when I found out how sick he had really been, (he spent most of my trip in the hospital,) and he had the rest of our friends going along with him, so I wasn't that happy after I got home.

Anyway, he's better now, he needed some kind of surgery, but if ever lies to me again, just so I'll go on vacation, he'll never hear the end of it.

So back to the flight. It was very uneventful, I had a few magazines, a book, and my Pass Porter with me, and there was a nice couple I talked to on the plane, so time passed a lot faster then I thought it would.

MCO & DME

When I landed in Orlando it was cloudy and drizzling. I was able to find the DME desk without much trouble, got through the line quickly and was able to board a bus within about ten minutes.

The bus ride went fairly quickly, and after making a stop at AS Sports, I arrived at AS Music.

All Star Music

When I arrived at AS Music, it was around 11:30 AM, so I was doing well on time since my flight only landed at 10:20. Check-in went smoothly, the guy at the check in counter, (I don't remeber any CM's names, sorry) was very pleasant, and while checking my I.D. realized he was near my hometown, we had gone to sister/rival high schools, though he had graduated a few years before me. I got my room right away, which I was very happy about, I was in the rock building, on the second floor, so I had an okay walk, but it wasn't bad. The only bad thing was the ice machine was broken on my floor, so for the first few days of my stay I had to go down to the first floor to get ice.

Here are some of the advantadges of traveling solo,

1. Enough space in the room.
2. Enough space in the dresser for all of my clothes means I didn't have to live out of my suitcase, which is always what happens when I travel with family, since with them I'm still considered one of "the kids."
3. Almost enough counter space for all of my soaps and lotions, but to be fair I do have lot.
4. Six pillows for my bed, since I took the two from the second bed, (which became a bed for my usual clutter of park maps, and random papers,) and the two in the storage area.
5. I got to watch what I wanted on tv, (not an issue except on Wed and Sun nights for Lost and Desperate Housewives.)
6. Never had to wait for other people to get out of the bathroom.

Mousekeeping was great, I left for the parks by 9:00 AM every morning, and always returned to a clean room. I tried to keep my room in an orderly fashion, so Mousekeeping wouldn't have a huge mess. I never let my clothes lay around, I had brought a bag for dirty clothes, and had been keeping that in a bottom drawer so each night I would just toss whatever I had worn into there. Though I did wear each pair of pants twice, I had brought a couple dozen tops with me. I like having a selection of clothes to choose from, and do not travel lightly. Mousekeeping would always leave all six pillows on my bed, and at first I was worried that she would throw away the time guides or the MNSSHP wrisrtbands, (which I save for scrapbooking,) but they were always were I left them, which was on the second bed, the table, or the nightstand, I made sure they weren't on the floor.

So the room was definatly large enough for me, but a family of four would probably be cramped, but for me was a great value, and the didn't mind the semi-long walk to the buses, it was actually very pleasant, since I always dwadled back at night anyway.

Day 1

The Plan -

After I had spent some time in my room unpacking and unwinding from my flight and the morning, (traveling gets me a litte quesy,) I was ready to head to the parks. I had already decided that I was going to go to AK that day for two different reasons, 1) I knew I wouldn't need two full days there, so going there for a few hours that first afternoon, I knew I'd be able to get in at least my favorite attractions, and 2) I had an ADR for Boma that night, and since AK was the closest park to AK Lodge, it made sense to go to AK that day.

I had about a ten minute wait for the bus, and then a short bus ride to AK, previously I had stayed offsite, and SOG, and the transportation here was much better then at either of those places.

I had already purchased my ticket, a ten day park hopper plus pass form Ticketmania months ago, so I was able to go right into the park. It had been rainy when I arrived in Orlando, but it was beautiful out now, sunny, but not to hot.

It was when I first got inside AK that I realized how hungry I was, so I made my first stop Flame Tree BBQ. After reading consistently good reviews here on the DIS Boards I had made this one of my "to-try" CS places. I had the pork bbq sandwich which came with baked beans and corn. (I'm going to add right now that I wasn't on the dining plan.) The sandwich and baked beans were both very good, the sandwich was huge, and I couldn't finish it. The corn was okay, but was obviously frozen, and I like fresh corn-on-the-cob.

Day 1 - Continued

Here's a short version for all of you who don't feel like reading through all of my boring details.

I went on It's Tough to Be a Bug, Festival of the Lion King, Rafiki's Planet Watch, and Kilamanjaro Safari.

Now back to my detail-filled trip report.

After I had finished eating it was about 1:30 and I decided to see It's Tough to Be A Bug since the wait was only posted as ten minutes. It was not a ten minute wait. . . it was a walk-on! I guess I got lucky that I got there about five seconds before the show started otherwise I would of had to have waited for the next one, but I got lucky. I had seen this show before, and enjoyed it better this time knowing what to expect, (I have a small fear of insects.) If you haven't seen this show before you should, it really is well done, and even with my fear, I did fine, unless you are really terrified of bugs, then maybe skip it.

Here's where I made what was probably one of my biggest decisions of the day, head to Africa, Asia, Camp Minnie-Mickey, or Dino Land. After checking my times guide, (which became one of my best friends during the week,) I decided to head to Camp Minnie-Mickey since the next showing of the Festival of the Lion King was about a half hour away.

I spent the half hour waiting in a line at the character greeting trails to get Kenai and Koda's autographs and pictures.

Anyway, I had gotten Koda and Kenai's autograph, starting my autograph collection of the trip. I had made a goal with myself to try and fill at least one whole autograph book by the end of my trip, which meant at least 50 autographs. I had a autograph book from my two previous trips that had been lost since my last trip, but that was during middle school, so before high school and college, I'm sure it's still around somewhere, but I feel much better now having one from this trip.

So then I was off to the Festival of the Lion King, I had waited until about five minutes before the show time to go into the theater, but there were plenty of seats left, and I was able to get a middle seat in the "lion" section, about halfway up, so I had a great view of the stage.

Festival of the Lion King may be my favorite show at WDW, and I ended up buying the CD for it a few days later. (Got to love those park-exclusive CD's.) Two of my all time favorite Disney songs are Be Prepared and Can You Feel the Love Tonight, so that might have something to do with it. I really love this show, the whole fire sequence with Be Prepared, and the aerial acts during Can You Feel the Love Tonight really make this show one of the best. And I've seen the Lion King on Broadway, and this is great for a theme park show.

After leaving the Lion King I headed over to Africa and decided to head over to Rafiki's Planet Watch to see if I could find any characters. (A lot of my trip I spent searching for characters, and I will pass up attractions to get a hard-to-find character's autograph.) I thought Planet Watch on the whole was rather dull, and adults could easily skip it, though it is cute, and educational, for kids, plus there are un-mobbed characters there. I was able to see Rafiki, so there was another autograph.

Then I went back to Africa, where I browsed through gift shops for awhile, I didn't buy anything except for a pressed penny book, since I also collect those, (I managed to stay away from pins until day six,) so I was doing budget-wise very well then.

It was almost time for the parade then, about ten minutes to four, and I was right by the bridge that goes out of Africa towards Discovery Island, so I had a good spot for the parade. I grabbed a smoothie from Tamu Tamu, that was a mixture of blueberries, pineapple, and banana, which sounded very strange to me, but I decided to get it anyway, and am very glad I did. I'll pretty much try anything at least once, and I'll try things now that I didn't like when I was little, like blue cheese. I used to hate blue cheese, it was always smelly to me, and less face it, looks gross, but now I really like it, especially the refrigerated dressing the stores sell. Yummy. But anyway, I was able to see the parade, which I thought had very cool looking costumes, and the giant animals were awesome, and I decided to try a trick I heard about, probably on here, that since the parade loops around the tree, and heads back the same way, that I could see it twice from the same spot, so I hung around that area, and sure enough about ten minutes later I was able to see the parade again with very few people around, and I mean very few, maybe about a dozen people right in the area I was in, so I was able to get some great pictures.

Right after the parade, I followed the back of it to the entrance of Kilamanjaro Safari, and walked right on. I really like this ride, since it's different every time, but rarely spend a lot of time in AK, so rarely ride it. Basically, I would be happy with just the Safari and the Lion King, (I'm very easy to please.) There weren't tons of animals out, and it seemed very bumpy this time, so I wasn't able to get tons of pictures, but that was okay. The first time went on this though, I got a great picture of the lions, that way back when I was still using film, otherwise I'd post a picture.

By the time I got off the ride it was like 5:05, so AK was closing. There wasn't a huge mob for the buses like I'm used to at the other parks, and my dinner ADR wasn't until 6:30, so I knew I was fine time-wise.

Next up - the night of Day one, AK Lodge, and dinner at Boma, and Epcot.

AK Lodge

After I got off Kilamanjaro Safari I was at the opposite end of the park from the entrance, but I enjoy all of the Disney scenery, so I had a nice walk. I really enjoy just walking around the parks, especially Epcot, going nowhere inparticular, which was not a luxury I had during previous trips with my family when we were always rushing somewhere.

When I got to the bus stop I had a few minutes wait for the AK Lodge bus, and it wasn't very crowded at all. The guide books are right, AK really empties out before park closing since there are no night shows or anything.

I got to AK Lodge a little after 5:30, it was my first time at the resort, and all I kept thinking was how beautiful everything was. This may be my favorite resort, and I'm really going to make a point of staying here someday.

Boma

My ADR was for 6:30, but I was at the check-in counter, which is shared with Jiko, by 6:00, and was seated by 6:10.

Boma is probably one of the restaurants I was most looking foward too, and I was not dissapointed.

Disclaimer - I keep a journal specifacally for restaurants, so I'm just going to be adding all meal info from there into here. (I really love my restaurant journal, and I use it for all restaurants I eat at, not just ones at Disney.) I did post dining reviews right after I was back, but I'll post them here anyway.

I consider myself a true foodie, and as I stated before, I'll try anything at least once. (My main reason for this trip was because of the Food and Wine Festival.) I also wanted to try as many restaurants as possible, and Boma was high on my list.

I have mixed feelings for buffets, I like that I get to try a lot of different items, but I'm always worried about sanitation. But Boma, is now one of my two favorite buffets ever, (tied with Crystal Palace,) it figures that both of my favorite buffets are at Disney.

My ratings are as follows - excellant, very good, good, okay, blah, and yucky. The difference between blah and yucky, is blah foods are tasteless, and yucky foods have taste, they're just bad.

I started with a plate of salad items, watermelon rind salad, good, but had a strong clover taste, pasta salad, very good, and I almost didn't try this because of the yellow coloring wich I figure is from saffron or tumeric, neither of wich I'm a big fan of, curried fruit salad, good, but a little odd tasting, and calamari salad, good, but I didn't like the wilted greens. I also had a bowl of creamy she-crab soup, this was excellant, and is probably on of the best soups I've ever had, I'd go back to Boma for this soup alone.

My second plate was more entree, meat and potato-type foods. The durban roasted chicken, okay, roasted vegetables, good, some kind of steak, good, (not the prime rib, more like flank steak,) afritude potatoes, okay, pap, double blah, (and I think it's a wierd name for the food, makes me think of something else,) and a bowl of butternut squash soup, again excellant soup.

Now for my favorite part of every meal - the desserts. I love the fact that at Boma all of the desserts are bite size, so I can try a bunch. Even after my first plates of food I was able to sample; bread pudding, good, had a vanilla sauce with it that was also good, coconut tiramisu, very good, (I really like coconut,) pineapple cheesecake, blah, the cheesecake part was tasteless, the chocolate mousse crunch and the zebra domes were both excellant.

I think the next time I go to Boma, (am planning on two dinners there next trip,) I may just feast on soups and desserts.

Epcot

After dinner I decided to go over to Epcot since there were EMH that night. I was at Epcot around 7:30, though a MGM bus came before an Epcot one, and I was tempted to go there.

When I first got to Epcot I went straight to Spaceship Earth, which is apparently always what I will ride first at Epcot. (F.Y.I. - The first ride I Ever went on at Disney was Spaceship Earth, but that was years ago, and makes me feel old thinking about it.)

I didn't do much that night, Future World was pretty much closed by then, no Wonders of Life, the Living Seas was closed for rehab, Soarin, (though I really wanted to try it,) had a two hour stand-by wait, and I wasn't about to ride Test Track or Mission Space after Boma. So I ended up just wandering around World Showcase, it was nice, started in Canada, and ended up in Mexico at 8:45, so I got a strawberry margarita, (my first Disney drink,) and watched Illuminations from Mexico.

I was going to stay at Epcot until midnight, but waking up at 4:00 AM, and then running around AK all afternoon was finally catching up to me, and I did want to be at MGM for opening the next morning, so I headed back to AS Music.

On the way back to my room I got a refillable mug, which I had planned on getting anyway, and was asleep shortly.

I'd highly recomend taking a solo trip I was so unsure of it at first, but all of the support from here really helped, and I really enjoyed the trip, so much that I'm taking another ten day one in Dec, and then a two-week one next Oct.

wow, that's great! those are some pretty long trips, I'd love to do that...
I'm thinking that a fairly long trip would work out better than a shorter one solo for some reason, although I can't pinpoint why I'm thinking that, any thoughts?

I'm going to be doing my whole trip report on the same thread, so there aren't 10+ different ones, I find it confusing when there's a whole bunch of different threads and you have to go searching for all of them. So I'll just continue.

One little thing about the first day I forgot to add, but was re-checking my notes so I'll add it now. When I was at Epcot that night I had bought the Food and Wine Festival cookbook, which was a great deal at $10, and I'm really glad I bought it that night, since almost every day after that I was constantly checking it to see what was in what I had eaten.

luvpooh - to answer your question, the reason I originally went for a ten day trip, actually first I was thinking of going for a week, but a ten day pass was only a few dollars more, so three more days cost me about $400 more, for the three extra nights ($250,) and food, ($50 a day approx.) My two previous trips with my family were three days and four days, and we did one park on each day, (AK wasn't open yet on the first trip,) so we were always rushed, and wanted to see everything possible. So ten days, (or more,) really gave me a chance to do almost everything I wanted. I still have things I want to do that I just haven't gotten around to, (a lot of MGM attractions pop into my mind, but since there are scheduled times, they're harder to plan around, and I only spent a day and a half at MGM) and long trips lets me try more restaurants.

Day 2

The Plan

Brown Derby Fantasmic Package for Dinner

My plan was to get to MGM at opening, and I wanted to leave my room by 8:00, (MGM opened at 9:00.) I was up around 6:30, had my regular breakfast of diet coke, (this is almost always my breakfast, though usually it is diet dr. pepper instead of diet coke,) and was at the MGM entrance by 8:30, so I made good time.

I was very pleased at myself for being able to get up so early, (I've said before I usually sleep until 10:00, I work a night shift usually, so that's not from being lazy, but because I never get off work until around midnight, and then don't get to bed until 2:00,) but, anyway, when in Disney I was very good about getting up early. I'd rather get up a few hours earlier then usual then deal with long lines later, though in the afternoons I always just used FP and went to shows instead of rides.

So I was at the park up near the front of the rope drop, and out comes Eeyore, Piglet, Lilo, and Stich. I highly debated for the next ten minutes before opening weather to rush to Tower of Terror, or get autographs. ToT won out, but only beacause I assumed, correctly, that I'd at least see Eeyore and Piglet at Crystal Palace the next morning.

So as soon as it was 9:00 I headed straight towards ToT, (which was still at that point my favorite ride,) and immediatly grabbed a FP which the return time started at 9:40, and then got straight in the stand-by line which, since the park had just opened, was a walk-on.

ToT was my favorite attraction until I discovered Soarin. I really think that everyone should ride this, as I really don't think it's that frightning. I was actually having a conversation with someone about this ride the other day, and we agreed that the name Tower of Terror and the fact that every ten seconds when the elevator doors open at the top all you can hear are terrified screams are way more frightning then the actual drop itself, which isn't so bad.

After riding ToT it was around 9:15, so still almost a whole half hour away from my FP, so I did what was a really good idea, and that was go on Rock N' Roller Coaster. I'd never been on it before, but had been looking foward to it, especially since I really like Aerosmith, (I really like a lot of those rock groups, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, etc,) and I thought the pre-show was great. I actually thought the pre-show was more entertaining then the ride, though that was very exciting, and more thrilling then ToT, though I still like ToT better.

After that it was 9:35, so I walked back over to ToT, and the nice CM let me use my FP, even though it was five minutes early. I wouldn't of minded if he had made me wait the five, but I guess since the stand-by line was only at about ten minutes then it really didn't make a difference. (The only time all week I really saw FP times being enforced was at Soarin, but that was the only ride with a considerable stand-by line at 2 hours sometimes, 20 minutes was more the norm for the bigger attractions, the mountain's, test track, etc.)

So using this great FP stragedy, I was able to ride ToT twice, and Rock N' Roller Coaster once within the first hour. It was still a few minutes before 10:00 when I got off ToT, so getting to the parks for opening is well worth it.

Day 2 - Continued

Since I had already ridden the two major attractions on that side of the park, I had a decision to make, wait for the first showing of Beauty and the Beast, more then an hour away, or go to another section of the park. I decided on the latter.

I walked up Sunset Boulevard, which is mainly just a bunch of shops, and as much as I love shopping, I knew I'd be better off going on the rides in the mornings, and waiting for the afternoon to go shopping.

I was right by the Monsters Inc. greeting spot, and happened to look at the times sign. There was less then five minutes to the next greeting time! And there was only one other family there, a little boy, and about ten year old sister with their parents in front of me, so I was able to get Mike and Sully's picture quickly.

I ended up at the Great Movie Ride after that, which has always been another favorite of mine, and I had a less then ten minute wait, but I actually don't mind the wait here, since I like watching the previews they play.

I really liked the CM I had on this ride, I want to say her name was Heidi, (not sure though,) and she was really good at the whole act.

At this point I was starting to get hungry, (the last thing I had eaten had been at Boma the night before,) so I was going to walk over to the little CS places around Echo Lake to look for a snack.

I was right by ABC Commissary, and I noticed a line on the other side of the building, so I walked around to check it out, there were Lilo and Stitch, and off to the side with just a few people Hercules. I didn't feel like waiting in the line for Lilo and Stitch, but did get Hercules's autograph and picture, he was really great at acting the part, and I like him better then Lilo and Stitch anyway.

There's also a little garden by there, with statues of people like Oprah, well Minnie and Goofy were out, and Minnie didn't have much of a line so I was able to get her autograph and picture too.

After getting Hercules and Minnie's autographs I remembered why I had gone over to that area in the first place, which was for my breakfast/lunch, which ended up being a spicy cheese filled pretzel from Min & Bill's Dockside Diner, it was okay, not that great, but filled my tummy.

I tried calling DBF when I was eating, but my cell never worked to well down there, in the parks, or in my room, so I didn't bother trying to call again that day. I also used this as a break to re-apply my sunscreen.

I started heading to the back of the park after this, and Lilo and Stitch had switched off with Chip and Dale, (who now had the long line,) and Hercules had switched off with Mulan, so I got her autograph and picture, she had no line whatsoever, and actually helped me hold my bag when I was digging for a pen. (I don't wait until I get to the character to look for my pen/book/ camera, I would always get it out and uncapped/open/on while in line, but since there was no line I wasn't holding anyone up.)

I'm going to go a little off topic here, but there were a few times when I was in line to see a character, when people had no idea who they were. I think it's worth watching the movies before you go to put you in that great Disney spirit, (unless your like me and end up watching at least one or two Disney movies a week anyway,) and it also gives good introductions of characters to kids. I don't think there's anything wrong with anyone of any age getting autographs, (obviously,) but there was something that bothered me was one person, (a parent,) made a remark about adults getting autographs/pictures for themselves, when, I quote, "the characters are here for the kids," and then they're kids don't even who the characters are. I know there's seperate threads on this, but why do people have problems with this? I'm paying just as much to get into the parks, and have just as much right as the characters as them.

Anyway, back to my report, I walked over to Star Tours after that, I have to say that MGM is proabably, while the smallest park, the hardest one to navigate. MK has all the different lands, so is easy to navigate and I'll just cover an area at once, Epcot is basically just three big sections, the attractions to the right of Spaceship Earth, the attractions to the left of it, and World Showcase, which is really just a loop, and AK is like the MK, except I always have to backtrack back to Discovery Island to get to the different lands.

So I rode Star Tours with a FP, which I must of grabbed earlier, (I have it in my notes that I had a FP, maybe I got it before I went on the Great Movie Ride?) I appreciate this ride more now then I did before, since the last time I had been on it was middle school, and since then I actually had seen the Star Wars movies, (I had seen them before but never actually watched them, if you know what I mean.) When I had been little I had never been able to get through all of the Empire Strikes Back, and pretty much just watched the Ewok parts of Return of the Jedi, but I now have seen all six movies, fully understand the storyline, and know the difference between all the characters and planets. I think that's needed to enjoy the ride more, and also, I realized on this trip the music is really helpful too, since when the tractor beam is pulling the ship in the Imperial March is playing.

Day 2 - Continued (Again)

It was a little after noon by then, and I had a ADR at Brown Derby at 3:50, (early because I was using the Fantasmic Package,) so I had a few hours to kill before then.

I still had plenty of things I wanted to do, so I decided to go on the Backlot Tour, which I enjoyed the first time I went on it, and had been dissapointed when it was closed when I went in 1999, (this was before we had the internet at my house, so we didn't know the rehab schedule before the trip, unlike this trip when I was well aware of closings, there was nothing really shut down at any of the parks except for the Living Seas, and Wonders of Life, both at Epcot, so I picked a good time to visit, I also visited inbetween the two hurricanes so I really lucked out with that.)

The wait for the Backlot tour was about twenty minutes, which wasn't to bad, but with all of the walkthrough exhibits it took up at least an hour, but for me was worth it. The display at the end was for villians, and there were a lot of costumes and props from various villians, the Joker, Penguin, and Two Face, all from Batman movies, Cruella De Vil, and Darth Vader are some of the ones I remember off the top of my head.

I'm going to apologize that I can't write more then a few paragraphs at a time, but there's four people at my house, one computer, and we still have dial up, so if I'm online working on this, that means no calls can come through so I have to get off the computer rather frequently.
