I've been to Maryland, but I've never heard of Ocean City. :(

Heard of it, but never been there..

Not from there, but I've been there many times. Its fun in the summer, and probably a nice place to visit in the spring as well - but it may be cold there, be prepared! :)

We used to live on Chincoteague Island, VA. (ever been there?) We would go to Ocean City just to eat at the Outback! Had to drive all the way to Salisbury, MD to do any real shopping or Dr. appointments, to have my son, etc.

We went to OC one 4th of July and watched the fireworks from the pier. They were directly overhead and so LOUD! It was awesome--like being "in" the fireworks themselves.

Ahh, thanks for stirring up all those great memories....

were there for a week. Maybe Disney has spoiled me but I did not enjoy it at all!! :(

Weather was very cooperative. 2 nice days, the rest were rainy or had high winds!

As a Marylander, I've heard of it, and have been there many times!! Loved it when I was a teenager, but now I prefer Bethany Beach, Delaware (right down the road from OC) -- I find it more family-oriented and less commercial. But whenever we go, we always have to spend at least one afternoon/evening at the OC Boardwalk.

Have fun!

Growing up, that is where we went on vacation every year! (except for when I was in 3rd grade when we went to DisneyWorld!). Now, my parents own a summer home in Ocean City, MD and the kids and I go down for a few days here and there over the summer.

Last summer, DH and I rented a house (with 2 other families) in Dewey Beach, DE and really enjoyed it. We were able to drive to both Rehobeth Beach and Ocean City to try new restaurants and things. We had heard that Dewey Beach was more of a young people's wild town, but we found it to be very family friendly; the house where we stayed was on the beach and just a block or two from several good sub shops and a Dairy Queen (yummy!), so everything we needed was in walking distance.

Anyway --
Have fun!

I have heard of it and been there. I actually worked there one summer many, many years ago. We try to go down for a weekend every year. We usually camp at either Frontiertown or Assateague. I always need to go to the boardwalk at least one night to get my Thrashers French Fries. :teeth:

Used to go there every summer with my family when I was growing up. DH's family always went to Myrtle Beach, SC. Now it's our family's beach of choice even thought Ocean City, MD is only 4 hours from us.

love oc.been there many times...but now you cant get a campsite at frontiertown for a week any more, and disney is just about the same rate....get fries at thrashers on the boardwalk, and go to phillips restraunt...the best crab and lobster, if you dont like fancy restraunts then go to higgins.....all you can eat crab!!! have fun!

We used to go to Wildwood, but decided to try Ocean City 2 years ago. It is lovely! Very clean and friendly. We also love Phillips Crab House!

Hoopers (crabs). Dumsers(ice cream). Thrashers(fries). JR's (ribs) Bull on the Beach (beef!). Purple Moose Saloon (um well yeah).

We heeerd o' it, too, but just "passed thru' " on our drive back from Virginia Beach....nice family destination!

I use to stay at OC MD every yr, but now we go to OC NJ, its closer and seems less congested then MD, it just depends what you are looking for in a vacation.

Well, I grew up in Salisbury MD (that someone already mentioned), this is 30 miles from Ocean City, so I am very familiar with OC. I actually avoided OC during the summer, other than when I worked there. I usually went before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. The worst part of OC is the congestion on 113 or Rt 50 getting there, although this is better since the completion of the bypass around Salisbury.

As someone mentioned, it is expensive and crowded. I was surprised that someone mentioned how clean it was, but maybe they are actually talking about the beach and not the city itself. The beach is very clean, but in the summer, the city is usually problematic with trash.

There is the beautiful Assateague Island National Seashore not far from Ocean City, unspoiled for the most part, not commercialized, and it has the wild ponies roaming free. Just remember not to get too close. I've seen a few people who didn't know any better or couldn't be told anything carried into the ocean by the seat of their pants or ending up with nice horsebites. You also need to bring the Off, as depending on the wind (land or sea breeze), the horseflies can be a problem.

And if you are going for crabs, take the 40 minute drive to Delmar, MD and go to the Old Mill. It beats Hooper's all the way around. Just plan on getting there early or plan on a wait. The Old Mill is all you can eat fried chicken, steamed crabs, clam and shrimp strips, corn on the cob, and hushpuppies.

Darn, now I'm getting homesick!

I was a little surprised at the clean comment too, Lucy. :teeth:

Another great restaurant in OC is Marios. Its been around for as long as I've been alive, I think, or at least as long as I can remember. Great, authentic Italian food and the best salad dressing I have ever had.

Another fun restaurant there, particularly if you have kids, is Fish Tales. Its an outdoor place, with a huge playground area for the kids in the sand. The kids can play on the playground while the parents can sit in these huge swinging chairs/hammock thingies they have. We were in OC last year and ended up going there twice - good food, good drinks, and entertainment for the kids - can't ask for much more than that!
