OCD Princess Planners: Flights, Frights, Food, & a ToT Race, Too!!!

Just thought I would share some personal updates....

One... Sunday Steve and I ran a 5 and 10k. There was not a huge turn out, but the course was amazing and both Steve and I finished first in our gender (he in the 5k and me in the 10k) I NEVER thought I would do something like that. Again, there were not that many people, but even if there were a thousand my time would have still been a PR and I would have been happy. See, I had wanted to get under an hour last month and did not quite do that. I hoped to get under an hour...even if it was 59:59. The night before was rough and I felt a cold coming on. (so I took mass amounts of samboucol) So while I hoped to get at least 59:59, I knew there was a possibility that I would get maybe a tad over. Just after the race started, I knew I was going to be fine. I immediately was ahead of all but one girl. (I say girl because she was maybe 20 or so) She remained ahead of me for a mile or so as we began to pass some of the 1/2 marathon runners (yes, there was also a 1/2 marathon that was running the course). The all of a sudden a guy came up from behind. He passed me and caught up to her. They remained in my sights for about a mile as I could tell the girl was trying to keep up with him. Then he broke free of her and was gone. I could see that the gap between us was closing and as I approached a hill, I thought "if I don't catch up to her before the hill I never will" So I did! I caught her and she never was able to catch me. I thought for sure we would leap frog, but it did not happen. I finished with a time of 56:35 giving me a pace of 9:07. The girl came in about 40 seconds after me and told me I was her inspiration. (maybe she meant motivation) It was raining the entire race and I was soaked. I didn't notice it while running, but once I stopped I immediately was chilled. Yes, it was only 41 degrees out too so being soaked to the bone was not fun. Luckily, Kira's house was near by and rather than change in a bathroom in McD's (like I planned) we called her to get her garage code so that we could get into her house. THANK GOD! I had such a hard time getting warmed up even with the fire that we had going in her fireplace.

Second, after a month... Steve is employed once again. He had been interviewing with both Disney and Blue Origin. Despite progressing through many levels of interviews with disney and having all the local teams approve his hire... the one team in Orlando blocked the hire and so the choice then was an easy one for him when Blue Origin (a company that designs rockets) made him and offer. He decided to start on 4/29. This gives us a few weeks for him to now chill and not worry about looking for work. (maybe he can do some of the mass amounts of house work that I have here at home ;))

Third, I now have my airfare for the return leg of the fall trip!!! :cool1: I realized that Kira had mileage points about to expire. So I made her a deal and she gave me her points. So my for both there and back my total was $7.50. I love using mileage points!!! I will be flying home on Alaska and it will be a direct flight. I am honestly a bit nervousabout this. It will mean a long flight with no break. :scared: Also.. in order to get a flight for the points that Kira had in her account... I had to fly back later than 10/6 (the 6th cost more points) when all the other gals are leaving. I could have flown back on any day that week, but since another stress for me is the fact I will be coming home to a lot of work... I need to get home asap. However, since 10/5 is the race...and I anticipate a very early morning return to our rooms (the party goes until 4am) I think getting a good night sleep before I leave for home will actually help me in being prepared for my work week. So I really do think staying the night of the 6th will work out well for me. And besides... what is one more night? ;)

 It will be so fun to have you along! I hope Boma works well for you as a prerace meal. I know we had it the night before last years race... and it was good... but that was the night BEFORE... not the night of. Last year, I had a lunch at PM and that was it. Now I am second guessing.... maybe this was the wrong choice? This was the meal the night before the phm too... and that was a 5pm dinner when I had to be up at 3am for the race. Yeah.. maybe something lighter would be better. I had not thought that this will put us eating a large amount of food just 5 hours before the race. I think it needs to be more like 12. :confused3

And I agree!! Tammie is going to be a rockstar come October!!! Last year this time, I was no where near as far along as she is...I while my time was not the best... I totally survived and I do think I could have done better.

I looked at the menu, and some of the possible items do seem they could be a bit heavy, but again, with me never having eaten there, I dont know what all they offer on a regular basis. I am good with whatever you ladies decide.

::yes:: a bit heavy... but there is quite a bit that can be "lighter" However there are quite a few desserts... and eating hours (if you say we really wont get to dessert until 6pm) before the big race I will probably have to forgo the desserts :(

:scratchin I wonder if we should change this to either earlier or another day. I thought late lunch/early dinner... maybe even an hour earlier would be better?

I think the 430p ADR is the earliest you can get in for dinner at Boma. They arent open for lunch.

I been meaning for a week to post this update...

Reflections from Week 2
Of Galloway 5K Training Program

WARNING: This is a long update&

If you think about the time that I have invested into my running training this is actually week 13. But it never seems that I make a lot of improvement (just a lot of setbacks and restarts); will this be lucky 13 for me?

April 3 (Short Run): I was really excited for todays run and looking forward to it all day. It had already been a long week at school (state testing round #1) and I really needed this for me. I am finding the running it a time that I get to force my mind from constantly thinking about things and focus just on running (I hope that someday running will be like walking a time to clear my head, but right now it is work). The weather however was not on the cooperative side, Sunday highs were in 80s and by Wednesday it was back to spitting snow. Thankfully I had not taken my gloves and ear cover out of the car&and prepared with warmer run clothing&run temp 37 degrees with a slight wind. The run went well; I finished it without being in total pain with the shins (I think that resting 2 days between a long run helps).

April 5 (Short Run): There was a lot of temptation not to run today, to celebrate end of our first round to state testing at school almost everyone was headed off to choir practice code for happy hour (and I dont mean Sonic Happy Hour) together. Instead, I made my excuse and headed to the park after school. Am I really getting that committed to this running thing? Plus, I was so excited with Amys news that she was going to make this trip and had just completed registration for the ToT 10 miler&yay a run partner. It was a beautiful afternoon, highs near 70 and again a slight wind that could be dealt with. Within 1/8 mile of the run, I knew that this was not going to be a repeat of Wednesday, my calves were killing me, but I continued to press on. At the ½ mile mark I was at a limp and barely able to walk, time to call it quits. I hopped off the trail and walked across the park to my car. Along the way I began to think that maybe I have too much compression on the calves since it really was not the shins but the calves in pain today, so I sat down and took the sleeves off and tried to run. Seemed to do the trick, but I really dont need to push it I got back on the trail and did ½ mile walking. So much for missing choir practice to run. I felt really defeated and texted the gals with a lot of self doubt and tears. Maybe I am not meant to do this race, maybe I am not meant to do this to my body. I had the heart, the soul, the drive, the determination&but my body is not cooperating. Usually it is the other way around that I dont have the determination and will power. I vowed that tomorrow I would be going to the run store and look for some answers.

Going to a running store with my pooh sized body is a very intimidating, but I knew it had to be done so Saturday morning after curves I cried uncle with my legs and feet and did it. With my shoes in hand, I entered the door and gave my story to the owner, Jean. Who immediately took me back to the shoe area and looked at my shoes (embarrassed) and the wear pattern&good news looks like I have an even wear. Then she put my foot on the computer and then had me barefooted do some walking and jogging. Guess who needs a stability shoe (I knew that) and arch support&my problems are probably in part due to the shoes that I was wearing, but also my size and training pace (trying to push myself too far too fast) have a lot to do with it. She then brought out about 6 pairs of shoes with varying degrees of arch support. I told her price, color, brand was not important at this point&I had to get over this hurdle with the legs/feet. As we tried on shoes she was very helpful with lots of tips about additional things I could do to help the shin splints. She taught me some great massage techniques with Bio Freeze as well as post stretches and daily all day stretches. The first thing she had me do was put on some compression socks, let me tell you that my feet rejoiced when I put these things on&Features Elite.

I about chocked at the price when I got them out of the store but they feel AMAZING! Next up was the shoes&from the moment I put on the first shoe with arch support I could tell a difference from what I was wearing. As we moved up the spectrum of arch support, Jean had me walk and jog. In the end with both agreed that the 2nd highest arch support was probably best for me&Brooks Adrenaline Medium GTS13. Of course, I had to pick the green&

We did not try on the max arch support, but there is always the option of coming back and trading out. So in my hands at check out was new socks, new shoes and biofreeze&I had not looked at the price of anything&I just wanted my legs and feet to be right&the total $160, but I got a free shirt!

At the checkout Jean wanted me to sign up for their 5K and 10K training class. I questioned as to their methods of training&all out run and politely declined that I was happy with my interval training program at the moment, confessing that I am really not thinking of myself as a runner. I could tell that she was put off some with the interval idea, but I know it is what works best for me at the moment. I really dont want to run with anyone&sure it might push me but I am intimidated right now about running and this is something that is personal inside of me. Out in the car I tried to gulp down the price and texted Ann&who not only approved of my purchases but I felt like put my mind at ease that I had bought the right things. Now to try them out, I really wanted to just hit the park right then, but I felt it would be better to wait another day and stay on schedule. I know that my shopping bag was not going to be an instant cure but maybe a step in the right direction.

April 7 (long run day): All through church I felt giddy; I was going to try my new running stuff! I had massaged and stretched all Saturday afternoon and even found myself massaging during mass&boy are there knots in my right shin&it almost felt good to push and knead to make them hurt. So dressed and ready to go, I headed to the park&I debated the whole time whether or not to put the compression sleeves on&but in the end heard Jean say to keep on using them. So the run started off well, but again within a ½ mile the calves seemed like there was too much pressure but I continued on until finally I could not stand it anymore and I stopped and peeled them down off my calves and continued the run. Bottom line is that I finished without a lot of pain in the shin area but still a lot in the feet area (but that is another story), not a great time but just finishing it felt good. I think I need to set my interval back down to 1 minute walk/1 minute run on long run days&

Reflections from Week 3
Of Galloway 5K Training Program

After my run on Sunday, I kept having a little bird in my ear (the lady from the running store) that I really should consider taking a full week off of any exercise....but telling someone who is really trying to accomplish this task it seemed like an impossible request. But the more I thought about it, the more I came to the realization that I really needed to take a break. I never thought I would ever get to the point that not exercising would be hard! So did I make a full week...well, does a school week count. I was able to rest until Friday...when my new compression sleeves came in.

So I rubbed my legs down good with BioFreeze (I had massaged and biofreezed all week long) but on all my new running gear and headed out.

Friday (Week 3/Day1): I felt tight the entire run, even bumping it down to a 1 min walk/1 min mile. I managed to do 1.8 miles at about a 14 minute pace. Not great, but I was pretty much pain free...and of course worried about Sunday's run would be like...usually after a rest the 1st day back I had no pain...it was the next 2 runs that had me in tears.

Sunday (Week 3/Day 2): After church, I headed out for my run. I think on Sunday's I am going to have to start getting up early and run...it was hot at noon time...but then again wait until Wednesday when we get a hard freeze! Legs Massaged with BioFreeze and all my new running gear...and we are off...each step I am waiting for the pain to appear, which over the next 2 miles really did not appear! :woohoo: I have now managed 2 runs, a day apart WITHOUT PAIN...not completely gone, but I think I am concentrating a lot so any little twitch scares me...today I managed a full 2 miles (1 min run/1min walk) with a faster pace than Friday...

Could I have turned a corner...

:cool1::cool1:

I think you may have turned a corner!

And... don't feel bad about intervals! That is a completely legit way to do this!!! Steve used the galloway site to determine what interval to use for the race last week. He DID NOT RUN the entire race, but used exactly what the site said would be the interval for him to use to achieve the pace he wanted. And IT WORKED!

I think the key is to just find a method that works for you. On both the disney races I have done, I have seen speed walkers. Truly.. NOT RUNNING AT ALL! I had a hard time keeping up with them at times!

Intervals work... running works... just each one is not for everyone!

I think you are doing awesome! And I love the green!!!

I sure hope so, only time will tell!

I dont feel bad about doing interval, there is no other way that I could do this...I feel bad about having to knock the interval down...to a 14 minute mile pace...but that is my goal for the race...

I am a green kind of girl...

I am in awe. 2 runs a day. Tammie, you are doing great.

Thanks Tink, but the runs were 2 days apart...I would die if they were in the same day! Noting to awe about yet, but come to the Villian party after TOT and celebrate with us!

Thought I should stop back by since I will now be joining you guys on a couple ADRs & possibly meeting up at MNSSHP & expo.

We are excited to have you...

I love Ohana & I am very excited to finally try Boma.

I have wanted to go to Boma on every trip, this time I hope to get there unless Ann overthinks it!

Tammie, it sounds like you are doing great on your training! You will be a rockstar come October!!

Thank you put I feel more like the geek wanna be in the band member...

:rotfl2:

What me? Over think something? :lmao:

As I told you today... it will be fine. not all of us are running that night and those who are can just use good judgement and not over do it. Eating light... that will be the goal. ;)

Completed Week 3

I did it, I completed Week 3 of the Galloway 5K Trainer with my "LONG" run of the week yesterday, almost pain free 3 days in a row! I have to laugh at the word long :rotfl2: because compared to what Ann is doing daily, this is not long. I did 2.5 miles (and I believe looking back that is my longest distance) and boy did it seem long! At the 1.5 mark I really felt like just walking for an interval (instead of 1 W/1 R/1W) doing 3 min of walking. But I kept pushing myself through that and finished doing exactly what Jeff told me...but I will not lie it was HARD. I am happy to report it was basically pain free! The right shins gave me really no problem at all (which had been the really hurting leg) while the left leg (which caused pain but not like the right) acted up from the foot all the way into the knee, not enough pain to stop me but enough to let me know that I was not going to be pain free. Prior to the run I did a Curvers Circut Workout...I know pushing it. Today a cold front is supposed to move in, dropping us from near 80 on Tuesday to 40 today! Yuck! Mother Nature is in some serious need of bi-polar medication this spring.

First... good for you!!! I know you can do this. It takes time... both in how much you commit to each week and how long it takes to get to a point where you don't feel like you are attempting to kill yourself. (and if I ever get to that point I will be sure to tell you. ;))

Second... I think you think I run farther each day than perhaps I do. I run just 4 days a week. one is for speed and is just under 2 miles. Two are for maintenance and are just over 4. Then I have my long run. My long runs are like my longest run was before the ToT last year. (7 miles) That one long run took me a very long time to work up toward.... so please keep that in mind. YOU WILL GET THERE! And the only reason I do them now... well, I worked long and hard to get to a point of being able to run a half marathon. I really don't want to lose that ability by running too few of miles in a week. Thats said... I will need to build back up my long run. Between now and the next PHM... I will take it up by a half mile each month.

And finally... yes! What is up with the weather?! I woke saturday and decided sunday would be a better day to run. Why? BECAUSE OF SNOW. It was nearly 60 today and really sunny... but forecast on my phone called for snow tonight. (not sure I believe it though) It makes it hard to know what I am wearing when I go out for a run. Yesterday... I went out in my skirt and short sleeve shirt (my phm shirt) and it was warm (almost too humid) and sunny. Steve went out shortly after I got back and by the time he returned it was pouring rain. CRAZY!!!
