Occupancy Thread

Thanks for the info...I didn't want to start a flame throwing contest...just wanted to know if cots were an option at DVC resorts...just wondering since I am a newbie to DVC ::yes::

Thanks!

Sometimes newbies get flamed, and are "scarred" for life! We old-timers don't mean to, it just sometimes happens because a newbie hits the wrong button unknowingly.

The stated occupancy limit is 4 for the 1 BR and MS will tell you a 5th under the age of 3 is OK. They will not be the occupancy police so ultimately you must dedide but definitely no cots through the DVC resorts. How about OKW or SSR which will be less points so you might be able to get a 2 BR?

I think you're going to be pretty cramped with 5 adults in a one bed. It, potentially, makes for some very friendly sleeping arrangements :O . There are also the potential problems of 5 adults having to share one bathroom (particularly with three girls wanting to get ready to go out). I would agree with Dean, if possible look at the lower point cost of OKW and get a 2 bedroom, that way you get 2 full bathrooms and every person/couple gets their own bed and privacy.

Would it be too embarrassing/difficult to put your sister off until a later trip? Your friends may feel a little uncomfortable if they think their participation in this trip has lead to you having to share your bed(room) with your sister. You can use the 4 people limit as a genuine excuse if you feel it's you best option out with her. I genuinely think you'll all have a much better experience if you have this trip with your friends and have a later trip with your sister so all parties can have some space and privacy.

Was your sister invited to join you? did you invite her, she decline (so you invited the other couple) ? or did she decide she would join you? IMHO if it's the latter ( and particularly as you're new to DVC) it wouldn't be a bad thing for you to lay out the ground rules pretty early in the process or you may find she likes to invite herself (and family) along on all your vacations. It may not be the case with her, but it is the case with many relatives that they see your outlay of capital as an opportunity for them to have free holidays. Putting them "straight " inevitably happens, but the experience of those on the boards leads me to believe it is far better ( and less painful) to deal with this potential situation early and politely ( while one still can be that LOL) then to leave the situation to fester and end up losing one's temper ( and the plot) and giving it to them with both barrels.

As Cruella points out it's a touchy subject here on the boards. I can understand why people with three relatively young kids would want to break the rules and slide one kid into an airbed occassionally. I do think that 5 adults is a different situation, full of potential strife that's going to spoil your vacation. I would try to avoid that strife at all costs. As a guy, I can guarantee you your husband will be ( and if he isn't you may want to ask yourself some questions) pretty upset that any chance of him being intimate with you while in the relaxed atmosphere of a vacaton goes out the door as your sister comes in it.

also remember that extra towels and linens for the 5th person are an extra charge. DVC only requires towels for occ. limits. sorry

you didn't say how many nts you will be there at VWL. If 6 or 7 nts maybe you could drop a weekend night with double pts to make up for a 2 bedroom for 6 nts.

Can your sister get a room at Wilderness Lodge or a studio at VWL? How about renting points for a studio for her?

5 adults with 1 bathroom doesn't seem like a good time to me.

paults,

Good suggestion on the money issue! If DS invited herself, maybe you can convince her to pay for one weekend night, which might get you enough points for bigger accommodations. I called Central Reservations, and a studio now goes for $195 at WLV for the rest of the summer, didn't ask about the larger accommodations, but if you dropped the weekends, paid cash for those nights, you could pick up larger accommodations for the rest of the week!

FYI, Everyone, did you know that a studio in all the DVC resorts is currently $169 per night EXCEPT for at WLV? What is up with that?!

I would do as others suggest and let your sister know that DVC only allows 4 in a One Bedroom and if she really wants to go you could get a 2 bedroom by paying cash for a few extra nights since you don't have enough points for the two bedroom for the whole time and ask her if she would like to pay for those nights you would be more than happy to arrange it. You could then rent point for those extra nights or get them through MS.

I'm sure it is simply a matter of supply and demand. In other words, when those discount rates were set, bookings for VWL were already such that the powers that be didn't think they needed to discount to fill the rooms.

Discounts are only offered if someone thinks the rooms won't fill without them.

Am I going mad or was this last page and a half a separate topic earlier today?

I think I need to get out more LOL

Yes it was.

Thank goodness for that, I was begining to believe I'd lost what little sanity I had left :D

Confused the hell out of me this turn of events LOL

I think a few threads about rooms have been combined into one. I noticed it a few days ago.

Me, too. Then I remembered that one of the mods said they will be moving/adding all the occupancy threads to this one.

Probably a very good idea - doubt there is anything new to say on this subject that hasn't already been said multiple times! :teeth:

Here we go again!!!!!

The stated occupancy for a studio is 4 people, or 5 if one of the occupants is under the age of 3.

They do not provide rollaways, they do not provide extra bed linen, they do not provide anything at all for the 5th person if the 5t person does not meet the "rule".

They will not do a head count, they will not arrest you if you show up with 5 people, none of whom are under age 3, and check-in to a studio.

If one of your 5 people cannot sleep in a crib, then you are on your own as far as bedding is concerned.

can #13 people stay in a OKW Grand villa, youngest child in group in 9 years of age??

Where young children are involved, it really depends on the sleeping arrangements. You would not be able to get a 13th key, but in all likelyhood a 9 YO wouldn't need one. That being said, the official occupancy is 12 in a GV.

Consider you'll have 3 bedrooms. Total beds - 1 king, 2 queens, 2 doubles and 1 queen sofabed in the living room.

12 is the limit. There are enough beds for 10 people assuming all beds can have 2 people. Paying for a GV and having someone sleep in the living room really doesn't seem like something one would like to do.

My goodness...if I knew people were going to get so worked up over a simple question I never would have asked. Sorry if it had been asked/answered before, but I did do a search and couldn't find an answer.

Thanks for all of the helpful responses...but I guess from now on I'll just refer to Member Services since obviously people here get frustrated answering a simple question from someone new to the DVC.

So until I'm a "veteran-DVCer" and I am welcome on the DVC board without insighting sarcasm and flame-throwing....
Have a wonderful day,
camlace

PS My sister was an invited guest on my vacation, so there is no need to throw flames at her either. Thank you!
