Does anyone here have an oat allergy (or a child with an oat allergy)?

I've had 2 pretty bad allergic reactions the past week. One I had last night was after eating granola bars I was making. the first one was a couple of hours after eating oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I was making. My allergist has told me to avoid oats to see if the reactions subside (I was tested about 4 months ago and tested negative and havent had reactions until last week....so we're trying elimination...)

I am already severely allergic to peanuts, eggs, and shellfish and mildly allergic to broccoli, thyme, ginger.

My late FIL was allergic to oatmeal, and nothing else. His allergy only kicked in if he actually ate oatmeal or something containing oatmeal--he used to make his kids cooked oatmeal for breakfast, and never had a reaction from cooking.

Interestingly, your food allergies can change over time.

I have to avoid oats as part of a gluten free diet so most products that are labeled gluten free will be free of oats. However, there are gluten free oats so you will need to check things like granola, cereal, etc. but most gluten free products are clear of oats because gluten free oats are still questionable.

I haven't heard of m y people allergic to oats but it could happen.

Have you been tested for allergy to corn/corn syrup? That could be in both items.

yeah I went out today and bought a bunch of enjoy life products (chewy bars, cookies, granola).

The thing is, we don't know if its really just oats that are causing a problem or if its also wheat, barley, etc. Because all have the same protein that could cause the reaction. But yesterday, I ate a bagel with no problem but the granola bars caused a severe reaction which makes up think its just oats.

But for this week, I am definitely avoiding oats and going to try my best to eat gluten free as well.

since you are gluten free, I have a question about what I plan to eat:
Salads (using either italian dressing or salsa for dressing)
fruit
chex cereal (only corn and rice chex)
enjoy life snacks
chicken
tuna
cheese (babybel cheese)
hummus
yogurt

Does this sound like a good plan? What else do you eat while gluten free? I am working at a day camp so l need to pack lunches. I can't eat any nuts or eggs so that is difficult as well.

That looks like a good menu. Check the salad dressings because they can have gluten in them and some yogurts can have gluten in them as well.
I am also dairy free and I have issues with a lot of foods that I have to avoid so I totally understand the frustration in trying to figure out what is making you sick and then adjusting.

Was there chocolate in the granola? Not that it can't be oats, but chocolate is more common.

DH has an allergy to wheat gluten, walnuts, peaches, plums, and has a not-so-pleasant reaction to xantham gum, which a lot of gluten free products use to add elasticity back into the product. Here are some of the products DH eats:

yogurt (Dannon fruit-on-the-bottom or Yoplait)
fresh veggies & dip
cheese
Blue Diamond Almond/Pecan/Hazelnut crackers
fresh fruit
ice cream
corn chips and salsa/quacamole/taco meat
meats
cereal (rice/corn Chex, rice krispies, corn pops, Cap'n Crunch to name a few)
almond butter with sliced apples

You could always take cereal with fruit to put on top.

My dd has Celiac and is allergic to oats as well (some Celiacs are) oats do not have gluten in them, but follow wheat crops, so have gluten in them from the wheat -you can buy GF oats though, my dd is allergic to them as well, so it is the actual oat, as we would only buy GF oats for her of course. There are some great recipes for oat free granola bars, just google that "oat free granola bars" you will find lots -enjoy! and feel good!

nope. and I ate an enjoy life chocolate bar this afternoon with no problems so its not the chocolate.

thanks everyone for the advice on what to eat. It's just so frustrating when you grow up being able to eat almost everything and then suddenly, one by one, you start losing foods to eat.Up until I was 18, the only thing I avoided was peanuts....and it was only a mild reaction. Now over the past 4 years I have discovered I can't eat: peanuts (anaphylaxis), tree nuts, eggs, shellfish, broccoli, thyme, ginger and now looks like maybe oats as well.
